Oprah Pretends That Sarah Palin Is An Actual Human Being

thumbnail icon: Oprah Pretends That Sarah Palin Is An Actual Human Being

Look, let's be real for once. Regardless of who you voted for in the last election--John McCain or that TERRORIST--or which political party you believe has the best ideas to lead our country through the converging tidal waves of 2012, there is one person who emerged during last fall's historic election about whom none of us should be confused: Sarah Palin. Political ideologies, economic models of communal or individual prosperity, and virulent hatred of certain minority groups' desire to be in love with each other aside, that woman is one of the worst assholes in the entire world. Period. When it comes to that, we are purple*! So what is concerning about yesterday's interview on The Oprah Winfrey Show is not so much having to look at this animatronic nightmare's face spewing some of the worst lies anyone has ever heard, although that is difficult, but it was the simple legitimacy that Oprah's extended interview with her offered to the concept that she is a normal human being who deserves attention and dignity and respect. Nope!

Ugh. Just unbearable. It's like watching a female George W. Bush talk, except without the tinge of borrowed seriousness that is bestowed by actually being the President, and without the modicum of internalized intelligence that comes from being surrounded by a group of serious and well-educated advisers. Someone seriously flipped her "aw shucks" switch to "high" and then snapped it off at the base. Her false modesty and her practiced "normalness" is the worst part. She is just a normal lady with a cold heart full of unapologetic bigotry, dead eyes full of blind ambition, who hunts wolves from airplanes in $10,000 dresses picked out for her by handlers, and still actually somehow believes that she is qualified to be the President of the United States**.

Again, that's fine! We live in America. It is everyone's Constitutional right to be a destructive robot hell-bent on terminating the rights of human beings and also the truth. The shame here is really on Oprah for pretending like all of this is real. Be careful, Oprah! She'll be back! It IS a tumor!

*I know that when it comes to that we are not purple. I reconize that Sarah Palin is incredibly popular, her book is a best-seller, and she is, even if only foolishly, seriously considering a run as a 2012 GOP Presidential candidate (AKA our last election). But I do feel strongly that we SHOULD be purple. She's awful. Just awful.
**It is possible that Sarah Palin doesn't actually believe she is qualified to be the President of the United States. It is possible that she is now playing a character because that character has proved popular and lucrative. It could be that she, like many humans, suffers moments of self-doubt and gets into situations for which she is unprepared. But as a horrifying monster and fucking liar, she presents no alternate self-conception to the boldly ignorant self-appointed leader of the Dumb World, so we don't need to give her this humanizing credit.

I appreciate that Gabe is aware that people may have different opinions but he still goes on to say those people are evil and or stupid. It's like Prejean. She's an asshole (she really is) but not because of her political views, it's because she a self important rude eejit. I suspect that Palin has lived in the bubble her whole life (like Prejean) and doesn't really know how to deal with not having her ass kissed. But I think we gummers are better than this kneejerk "everybody knows we are right even if they disagree" attitude.

This is actually exactly what I'm talking about. You can't allow for someone to disagree about a political position. I assume you say that because she's against gay marriage. Is that really saying they are second class citizens? I think it's open to disagreement. Obviously you don't. It also seems you are assuming all kinds of motivations of hers of which you do not actually have any knowledge. Say she's wrong all you want. I think she wrong on lots of stuff. But to get so worked up about her only makes you look petty. If she's so stupid why would you give a rat's ass what she thinks? I just think the videogum world is better than that.

PCBOWEN YOU know I like YOU. But c'mon! THERE IS A difference between BEING AGAINST gay marriage AND THINKING HOMOSEXUALITY makes someone a subhuman DEMON THAT WILL burn in hell FOR ALL eternity because THEY ARE COMMITTING a crime on PAR WITH murder.

THE HATE FOR Palin over the GAY ISSUE (and PREJEAN FOR that matter) is not BECAUSE THEY let it drop at 'THIS IS what I fuckin' BELIEVE" but BECAUSE THEY take it ONE STEP further and say "Because I believe this shit, I am a moral rolemodel." SO WITH that stance THEY MAKE the claim that homosexuality is MORALLY, FUNDAMENTALLY wrong--even if THEY DON'T outright state it they SURE FUCKIN' claim IT.

To think THERE'S ANY kind of disassociation BETWEEN writing THAT SHIT out word-for-word or DEMONSTRATING IT through actions is NAIVE AT best, son.

Try substituting "black people using the same water fountains as white people" for "gay marriage" in that sentence. But hey, that was just a "political issue".

This is a disingenuous bullshit line of argument. Gay people can use any water fountain they want. AmPat makes a good argument that Palin/Prejean demonstrate with their actions bigotry against gays. I don't think I agree with him though. I don't automatically assume they have hate in their hearts against gay people. Well, I'm not so sure about Prejean, I'm new to her brand of shittiness. I never gave her much thought, actually I don't give Palin much thought either. They don't deserve that much of my brain. Or yours for that matter.

I just I like it when videogum is funny with jokes and not an unfunny echo-chamber.

"I don't automatically assume they have hate in their hearts against gay people." Well, that's a good point... I think bigotry and prejudice really come from fear, not hatred. I don't think you necessarily have to have hate in your heart to be a bigot, or to act in a bigoted manner, but fear of the unknown can be a big factor.

The water fountain example was just a way of saying that if x's are in power and say, "x's can have this, but y's can't, or have to have something else", then that's unfair, and saying it's just a political issue isn't really excusable.

Here's the thing, though, I actually am more upset by Barack Obama's homophobia than Sarah Palin's. I actually understand Palin's: she's a homophobe because she represents homophobes (hey, white supremacists aren't going to lead themselves). But the fact that we liberals and gay people in particular voted for Obama and he's still spewing this "I believe marriage is between a man and a woman" bullshit is a 100 times worse. And why? Because he thinks if people don't think he's a homophobe that he's going to lose the 4 or 5 Religious Right members that actually voted for him? What a coward. That's where our outrage should be. If the politician we like the most can't even bring himself to say gay people should be treated like equals, what chance do we have to convince anyone else?

I think it's a fair beef you've got with Obama but I think it's time to admit that he's just a politician like all the others. He's aware that pro-gay marriage initiatives have never won when put to a vote and he hasn't really shown the guts to take responsibility for an unpopular view.

The margin is getting smaller so time may be on your side. I've never been a fan of Obama but I had hopes that he would be "post-partisan" like he said but I am increasingly disappointed in him. So I hear ya but get used to it. He's not gonna get much better.

I want to forgive you because I love Bernard Black, but the fact is, I think everyone here is capable of making their own decision (and have) about whether Sarah Palin is horrible. I'm just pretty sure that this particular blog does not cater to a pro-Palin demographic, or a very political one at that. Nobody comments here to express their thoughts on politics in a balanced, well-constructed manner (well, except for An American Patriot). They do it to be funny and get upvotes. Because it's the Internet.

Also, a lot of people think Prejean is an asshole because of her political beliefs, as well as her smug, self-important attitude. And guess what? Even at videogum we're actually smart enough to figure that out on our own.

I just don't see why you would expect a rational discussion here as it's not the point of this place. Not every comment is a winner, but I don't assume anyone here is going to express their serious thoughts about Palin either. I assume they're going to use bad words and post silly gifs.

But if you're looking for an actual discussion, I suggest that rather than deriding others, you simply begin a conversation by expressing your opinion in a thoughtful way. I bet people would jump in if they had the time or inclination.

For example, I am ambivalent on Sarah Palin. Do I think she is fit to be a leader of this entire nation? No. And I don't agree with her stance on many issues. But do I think she's relatable and can I see how many American women would feel that way? Of course! She is young, energetic, strong values, has a lovely family, and juggles them and a career. On that basic level, she's is like 80% of America. Do I blame her ambitiousness? Also no! Because that would be against my opinion that women should not be forced to give up their other goals because they are married and have children. She is correct in saying that to do so, you need a strong support system in place so that your career does not come at the expense of your family, and married men have that in a wife, but if you're the wife, you need to find someone, be it your husband or otherwise, to be the wife.

Nor do I want to deride her religious beliefs, because a) I come from a very respectful religious background, and b) I don't believe it is any more appropriate to deride someone's Christianity than it is to deride someone's Jewish or Islamic beliefs. I just don't agree with extremism or religious beliefs interfering with decisions about society as a whole. So I don't like when she or anyone does that, but I'm not going to say her faith in God means Sarah=The Worst.

So it's hard to completely hate Sarah Palin (although it's easier when she's running opposite the candidate I very much wanted to be President) when she is like most of the people I encounter every day. Heck, she is a lot like my mom, who doesn't believe evolution is real. Do I want my mom to be President? No! But do I hate her? No! She's good with kids and bakes cookies and works really hard at her job. And she's my mom!

Also pcb, the nonstop idiocy and frankly obvious lies in the first clip alone warrant a lot of hate. She honestly thought getting a D in college was her only controversy? She thought the teenage kid of an anti-choice VP candidate being pregnant wasn't newsworthy? So she wanted to tell America they were pissed at their pregnant daughter, not super supportive? And there was a double standard because the media didn't spend as much time on Obama's 7-year-old? And then, outright lie: the media "obeyed" Obama when he said "My kids are off-limits" (awesome that Oprah calls her on that -- it was YOUR kids Obama was talking about, Sara -- the look on Sara's face is GULP/busted/cry). Sara Palin is bad for America.

I like America. I can't like both!

Also, [insert charming cat photo here].

Yeh, I couldn't bring myself to watch the clips. I think I was clear I'm not a big fan of Palin either. As for Oprah, (uncontrollable gross out shudder) I just can't take it.The only interview of hers I've seen in the last 5 years was Cormac McCarthy and she almost ruined THAT for me. But give her credit she's the only person with the power to pull him out of his hide-out. Shit! There I go hedging my hatred again. FUCK!!!

Nice find!! I didn't know that the director of The Road is the same guy that did The Proposition. That was a very McCarthy-like movie and was awesome.

Her claims of a media double-standard regarding the candidates' families just baffles me. She paraded her family through hockey games and stood them up as props for a huge number of rallies. She was using her family as a political tool from day one, and I really don't blame her. She's got a very nice looking family, and I'm sure they secured a decent chunk of votes for the GOP. They never said they felt exploited, so it's ridiculous to assume they were. It was probably a lot of fun for the kids to get up in front of the cameras and have everyone in the country know their names.
Still, why decry the media for paying attention to your family when you've consistently placing them in the public eyes since the dawn of your campaign? It doesn't make any sense. If I had to guess, it seems like she had a chance to expose voters to her beautiful family and at the same time, attack the "liberal media". Right there, you've hit on two key spots for your base. I'm not trying to be cynical, but regardless of what everyone thinks, Sarah Palin isn't dumb. She may be completely uninformed a myriad of issues, but she wouldn't have been Governor of Alaska if she didn't have the political savvy to play both sides like that.

I think the problem a lot of people have with Sarah Palin is that she doesn't give opposing sides the respect they deserve. While the AP was fact-checking her book for lies (known lies - obvious lies from her VP candidacy and earlier), she accused them of attacking her and wasting resources on "opposition research." She's not simply vapid - I'm pretty sure she believes and has very strong conviction behind everything she says, whether or not it makes sense and whether or not it is a horrible lie.

It's one thing to allow for someone else's political opinion or even moral views (however wrongly skewed), but it's another thing to treat someone's very, very passionately delivered misinformation with the respect that she won't give to any other viewpoint. It's impossible to have a debate with someone who is plugging her ears and screaming "BLAH BLAH BLAH I CAN'T HEAR YOU" over and over.

I think the press and Sarah Palin are the pots calling each others kettles black. Neither quite have the truth or the attempt at seeking it without bias mastered.

That's why I only watch Fox News! J/K. For real, though, the media is just as biased against Palin as Palin is biased against the media. But the same is for Obama, and everything else.

I'm just going to say this about the whole wolves issue. I am not Alaskan, I live in California. I don't live every day with the threat of being mauled by a wolf. I honestly don't even know how great of a threat that is. As a Californian I have a hard time telling Alaskans what they should do about the wolves in their state. Also, shooting things from helicopters is generally fucking awesome.

There are varying accounts, but most records show that in the last 30 years, two people have been killed by wolves in the U.S. One in Minnesota, one in Michigan.

This is generarllyfucking awesome. WARNING: That link is a very real, very sad image that gives this a bit of context.

I just read that Levi Johnston isn't showcasing the junk in Playgirl, which for some reason just pisses me off. Seriously, what's the point of posing as a centerfold in a nudie mag if you're not gonna show the goods? This pretty much confirms that Levi Johnston shares at least one thing in common with the Naked Wizard from Coachella. Why the hell else would you pose
in Playgirl and not whip it out?

What I'm trying to say is that Levi Johnston has a small cock.

Maybe someone told Levi that Playgirl is actually for dudes. He better at least be in tighty-whities and not cover his junk with a prop or something (see google + david duchovny + teacup. What? Find it yourself. I’m not going to hand feed someone porn even if it is softcore). And I say that not because I WANT to see a 19 year-old baby daddy’s package but I because I am a horrible pervert.

Let's not forget all the race-baiting she did at all her campaign rallies that went totally unaddressed during this "interview." All that "palling around with terrorists" stuff was nightmarish, the behavior it incited in her supporters. Remember that monkey doll? Remember the "He's-- he's an ARAB" lady? Remember those drunk people on a tractor (or whatever it was)? Sarah Palin's speeches encouraged this kind of stuff; she encouraged this divisiveness, and continues to support scary fringe candidates and positions now. Never has she engaged in or even stood for an intelligent exchange of ideas. She's this shining star of insanator stupidity who is dragging the political discourse even further into the xenophobic, illiterate muck.

Can I just say it? Why are liberal blogs (or blogs run by liberals) so obsessed with Sarah Palin? Can't we end this shit already? I don't get it. We all agree that this person never has anything good to say? Then why do we spend so much time talking about what he says? I can't visit a liberal blog anymore without coming across 3 new Sarah Palin articles (The Daily Beast even has its own Sarah Palin section, which, I shit you not, has literally around 50 Palin articles written in the last couple months alone). When she was a VP candidate, it made sense. When she lost and was simply a Governor again, it made less sense. Now, it makes no sense. She isn't anything. Which means it's very easy to pretend she doesn't exist at all, so why don't we? The most infuriating thing about this is that at this point, every anti-Sarah Palin article only helps Sarah Palin. The people that hate her aren't going to change and the people that love her aren't to change, so any article bashing her just fuels her "they are all out to get me!" victimization. So, for the good of humanity, can we stop this insanity already?

One more week. Tops. She's on a media blitz right now because of the book tour. As soon as the tour ends, FOX will still be splicing footage of crowds from 2008 rallies with current book-tour signing lines (True, but not surprising), but every other channel will let her fade back into the dull roar of Tea Partiers.

I have a horrible feeling the obsession lingers on because she's viewed as a genuine threat for 2012. I still can't quite grasp how passionately she's adored by her supporters - she's today's Queen Esther, apparently.

On a sort of unrelated note, I still miss this: http://sarahpalin.typepad.com/
