Mike Myers Names Some Famous People Who Think He's Funny

thumbnail icon: Mike Myers Names Some Famous People Who Think He's Funny

With The Love Guru opening Friday with much of Mike Myers's clout on the line, EW asks whether the comedian is still relevant. Included are some re-hashed stories about how difficult Myers is to work with, possibly because of his genius or his hypoglycemia. (In Myers's defense, does Penelope Spheeris do anything but pop up every time he has a new movie to talk about what a diva he was on Wayne's World?) Myers declined to be interviewed for the article about the backlash against him, but is quoted from earlier interviews he gave in April:

''Dave Foley said about me -- which I love, greatest quote ever -- that it's dumb comedy done by smart people,'' Myers told EW. ''What Jerry Seinfeld said about me is that I've managed to break the rules of all American parody: I parody things that Americans don't even know. It's been said of me that I can do comedy where comedy hadn't previously existed.''

Well, don't we think highly of ourselves. The Love Guru looks unbearable and my money's on Get Smart, but an audience dominated by teenage boys probably doesn't place a lot of weight on how easy to work with a comedian is, as long as he provides the catchphrases they so desperately need to mimic. Related: Esquire's cover story on Myers consists solely of Myers giving lame punchlines to famous historical events provided by Esquire. What an enigma, or a control freak, the man remains.

I have to give Myers some credit for the sheer amount of memorable characters he's spawned. But really, shouldn't we just retire comedians after X number of movies? Can you think of one who hasn't become a unbearable parody of themselves (Steve Martin, Will Ferrell, Jack Black, Eddie Murphy, etc?)

Scott

Fun (not fun) fact: Seinfeld meant that only in reference to Sprockets.

I think they edited out Myers' last line after all that praise: "So I got that goin' for me."

I can tell by that picture that that facial expression was preceded by his insanely annoying, toothy fake laugh that WAS NEVER FUNNY.
