Duh Aficionado Magazine: Glitter Did Not Fail Because Of 9/11

thumbnail icon: Duh Aficionado Magazine: Glitter Did Not Fail Because Of 9/11

In a recent interview, Mariah Carey has a whole new theory on why her movie Glitter was a disaster, and it's basically her senior thesis paper for Logic University. From Celebitchy (via ONTD):

"That movie was released on September 11th, 2001 - could there be a worse day for that movie to come out? I don't think so," she said. "I don't even know that many people even saw the movie so I don't think it's the worst thing ever done."

"Glitter was a learning experience and I wouldn't do it again if you paid me. But I didn't have representation or anyone to tell me: 'What you need is a great director'."

To be fair to Mariah, I almost understand what she's saying. It is hard to think of a worse day for a movie to come out. Although when it comes to that movie it's true that I can't imagine a worse day but I also can't imagine a better day. I feel really strongly that the day was not the problem. Not to mention the fact that September 11th, 2001, was a TUESDAY, which is basically the most popular release day of the week for new movies, which only makes this story more smart and full of facts. Whatever, the point is that she didn't know you needed to have a good director to make a good movie, and she wouldn't do it again if you paid her, because apparently the first time she did it for free?

And besides, she doesn't even know that many people even saw the movie, so it can't be the worst thing she's ever done, she doesn't think, because if not even very many people saw it then it is less bad because it's called math, dummy, look it up.

Head of her class. With honors.

Yeah, how can I enjoy a poorly written and acted vanity project when 3000 people just died!

Um, yeah, Glitter didn't come out on September 11th. The soundtrack to the movie came out on September 11th. The movie came out on September 21st. But I love that in Mariah's version of history, her movie was released on a Tuesday. Also, Mariah is smart.

Bob Dylan's album "Love and Theft" actually came out on September 11th, 2001 and was ranked by Rolling Stone as #467 on the list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Her argument is invalid.

'What you need is a great director'."

OOOHH SNAP, Vondie Curtis-Hall! You just got served by Mimi! And so forth.

Also, from IMDb TRivia:

"Release of the movie was postponed for three weeks when star Mariah Carey was hospitalized as a result of an 'emotional and physical breakdown.'"

So, it was YOUR fault it was released close to 9/11, Mariah Crazypants.

even if you hadn't defaced the crying eagle photo it would have still been insane. In retrospect, all of the memorial shit you could buy from corner stores and Duane Reade after 9/11 was so completely absurd.

is that Louis Garrel in your pic, because he's AMAZING?

anyway, if this Mariah Carey star vehicle had been more transparently titled (Mariah-Carey-StarMobile???), maybe it would have fared better... but probably not.

Jay-Z's "Blueprint" and Ben Folds' "Rockin' the Suburbs" both came out on 9/11/01. I still frequently listen to both. Meanwhile, "Glitter" is frequently used as a punchline in half-assed VH1 pop culture shows.

MusclesMarinara - I remember looking forward to 9/11 as the day Love and Theft would come out...I'm pretty sure it was nominated for a Grammy for best album, too (not winning, though, like Time Out of Mind did). Didn't know that about Rockin' the Suburbs - wasn't into BF then but am now and like the album. Reminds me of Todd Barry's bit (on the Falling Off the Bone album) about the guy he bumped into on 9/11 that looked at him profoundly and declared, "The new Mercury Rev album is out."

Glitter is the best movie ever. When "Dice" makes his slow motion entrance, or when mariah and Dice write a song together while apart telepathically or something... Genius.
