You Guys, We Should Buy More TVs

This is a short film created to promote a new Philips TV that has the aspect ratio of an actual movie screen (21:9). But it's not really an ad, it is more like a work of art.

Cool. It's designed to be played on a loop, just in case you want to watch it forever. It's the hyper-violent, non-comedic variant of the Zach Galifianakis Absolut commercials. They should make more ads like this; visually beautiful, completely entrancing, which could stand on its own detached from its marketing purpose, and without the heavy-handedness of a jingle or even a logo. It's actually more effective, right? It makes the advertiser seem a little bit smarter than the competition, a little more in-line with my own interests in things that are good and are not crass and obvious.

Yikes. I better get a free Philips TV out of this.

Wow, that was mesmerizing! The music was fantastic, too.

I want to watch that movie! Except I don't - I want to just watch three more hours of this.

this ad is quite good, but can we talk about Pitchmen, the discovery show about billy mays and his dapper australian counterpart I've never heard of? The show goes behind the scenes to reveal their insane moral depravity, but simultaneously works in little demo's to sell their products. Crazy!

Are you sure you aren't just watching Discovery after midnight when it's all infomercials?

Wait, so the TV is actually a Matrix-style 3D virtual reality crime scene viewing device? Because I'm going to be disappointed in anything less.

The music reminded me of waiting in line at the Batman roller coaster in Six Flags Great America. They should totally make this commercial into an amusement park ride.

Advertising is an arms race between an increasingly cynical audience and a rapidly adapting market. Go read Coercion by Douglas Rushkoff. It helped me understand the implications of this competition. Either you buy into the marketing or become so cynical that your healthy psychological behavior is undermined.

Anybody else notice that this is basically a composite of every single scene from The Dark Knight?

Seriously, though, in answer to your question: a thousand times no. There should absolutely be no further blurring of the lines between advertisement and art. Decline of Western Civilization, and all.

This scene should have been in The Dark Knight (killer Klowns and stuff)... Unfortunately, The Dark Knight was in The Dark Knight and this was not and :(

YES! THIS IS THE COOLEST FUCKIN THING I'VE SEEN IN A LONG TIME. Did you guys get the twist? FUCKIN AWESOME. Who we think is good is not who we think is good. SHIT YEAH. Let's have more slow-mo'd hyper-violence ads showing us we might not know who someone is initially until we have the whole pictures. THE WHOLE PICTURE GET IT? like the tv. cause it's big. and

I don't get it. Why the fuck do I want this tv again? Ah I don't give a shit, this is so fucking awesome.

I don't think they could get me to buy a TV with that (what brand are they pushing?), but it sure looks purty.

One cool thing no one seems to have noticed is that the length of the ad (2:19) is the same as the aspect ratio (21:9). Nice touch.
