Matthew Perry Vs. Thomas Lennon And Ben Garant

thumbnail icon: Matthew Perry Vs. Thomas Lennon And Ben Garant

In this morning's Entertainment News, both Matthew Perry (The Whole 10 Yards, Serving Sara) and the comedy team Thomas Lennon and Ben Garant have secured pilots for new TV shows. It's a feud! I mean, it's not a feud, but we can pretend it's a feud. PUNCH HIM! KILL HIM! So, here is Perry's new project, from the Hollywood Reporter:

Perry, who turned 40 in August, conceived the comedy, in which he will play a self-involved manager of a second-rate sports arena who begins to re-evaluate his life on his 40th birthday.

And here is the new project from Lennon and Garant, also from the Hollywood Reporter:

The broadcast network has handed a pilot commitment with penalty to the multicamera comedy he will write with Robert Ben Garant, his "Reno" co-creator/co-star and frequent collaborator.

The two also will executive produce the project, whose premise is being kept under wraps, with Peter Principato and Paul Young. Lennon will star; Garant will play a supporting role.

So on the one hand we have the aging star of a highly successful sitcom putting together a self-indulgent vanity project, and on the other hand, we have a SECRET project from two super funny dudes who have spent years toiling in basic cable and supporting roles in Le Divorce finally making the move to primetime. I'm not going to tell you which dog I chose for this hunt, but let's just say there are two dogs, and the prey is a FRIEND.

Just kidding. There's room enough for all of us. Besides, I am pretty sure that Lennon and Garant's "toiling in the shadows" has made them both millionaires. Night at the Museum? Get out of here. Bartender, a round of success for everyone.

Don't forget Taxi, The Pacifier, and Let's Go to Prison! I love Lennon & Garant as much as the next Calvin & Hobbes panel, but they have done some seriously UGH, WHY stuff in their careers, enough to make me unsure about their new show. But here's to hoping their new show has at least all the sparkle and fun wit of their Herbie Fully Loaded screenplay!

Yeah, they have the potential for awesome as equally as they have the potential for awful. But I trust that they always know who they're writing for when they make these different projects. So the real issue is, let's hope they're writing for us with this pilot.

THE ONLY THING thematically SIMILAR ABOUT those are SOME large dicks. BUT THE plot's AREN'T EVEN close to BEING the same. THEY GOTTA keep it THAT WAY SO fans of THE shows CAN ENJOY THEIR attention TO razor burns DETAIL!

What the hell are your smoking? Taxi was the best movie of the mid-2000's. Hilary Swank robbed Queen Latifah of an Oscar.

Let's all not forget that Matthew Perry and Thomas Lennon played best friends in the film 17 Again. So this match-up is as poetic as the film 17 Again.

...I just popped my comment cherry to admit that I've seen 17 Again.

I've always thought that Matthew Perry deserved a good project. He's not nearly as obnoxious as a lot of Hollywood types, but all the stuff he picks is shit. (Studio 60 was good for a while!)

But I also like Lennon & Garant, so, like you said, I wish them all Topher Grace-levels of success.
