How's Our Driving?
Videogum launched on April 8th of "last" year, and the last nine months have been pretty fun, at least for me. I won't speak for Lindsay. I think Lindsay is kind of miserable, actually. Her latest box cat post is obviously a cry for help. BUT ANYWAY. At this point we're three-trimesters into this, and I think we're really starting to get our blog legs.
But we always want to get better. So this is your chance to let us know what you'd like to see us do differently. Let's make the Videogum of 2009 the best Videogum yet. Do you have a great idea for a recurring feature? Is there a subject you wish we'd write about more? Are there amazing TV shows we're missing? Let us know, either in an email or in the comments.
Personally, I'd like to see us cover first-run movie-theater movies more. We have a tendency to write about trailers and not follow up on the actual product. So hopefully we'll do some more of that. We've gotten lots of requests (seven requests!) to bring Double Dog back, and we are working on that. There will definitely be new Double Dogs (or is it Doubles Dog? Grammar is hard!) in January. POST-CHRISTMAS MIRACLE. But you guys should send us ideas for those, because they can be hard to come up with. Lindsay particularly enjoys suggestions that involve her singing or dancing on camera, so send lots of those.
Remember, there are no stupid suggestions. Only stupid people making suggestions. So, YOU BETTER DRUMLINE! What? Send us suggestions.
2008, you guys. We did it!

What ever happened to the Double Dog Dare? Lindsay watching all the Saw flicks back to back was the best post you've published so far. But then there really weren't any other Dares. Bring back the Triple D!

You never post about video games, which I think is technically part of your official purview. Soulja Boy Tell 'Em's review of Braid would have been a natural topic for discussion, I think.
On which topic, a Soulja Boy Tell 'Em Promise might not be uncalled-for.

We decided to stop covering video games a while ago. Mostly because we don't have any knowledge of or interest in video games.

My favorite feature on the site was Gabe's recaps of The Pick-Up Artist 2. So I think Gabe should definetly recap Tool Academy, since it will more of the same type of terrible.

wow - check out Dave, everybody. not afraid to lay it all out there in the comments section, and call for a firing! it reeks of boldness.
also, lindsay is funny and should do funny house m.d. recaps for me to read.
Score = 10
Not that Lindsay needs this or anything, but I just wanna say I always have so much trouble deciding who is funnier between the two. I love you both equally, Lindsay often gets the hilare punch in quick, while Gabe is great at bringing the hilarity to its capacity in length. and where would videogum be without its amazing cuteness factor? Plus lindsay totally wins for picking the best viral video of the year by far (drunk history v4).
although gabe is greatly helped by his great looks.
anyway, you guys are the ying of each others yang. werk!
Score = 2
Lindsay is GREAT--she truly does balance out Gabe's snark with her witty and humorous, but usually sweet and thoughtful posts, and where would anyone be without the internet cat of the week?
Score = 0
Lindsay is fine, but whether it's cats or Paul Rudd, she tends to have a holy day every time one of her favorite things pops up on youtube. A little more diversity would be appreciated. Otherwise, keep up the good work, you two.
Score = 3
It wasn't like I was watching it all the time, but I remember when TV Land first started and it was a cool station playing obscure shit and even better old commercials now it's just huge day long blocks of Lucy, Bonanza and Cosby... my parents pay for HBO just to watch Ghostbusters 2 for months and months on end.(of course once the Sopranos were on) G and L are good, they make me think of that guy and that girl Anna who bantered between the airing of "Bull Duram" on TBS...but hey J.Stewart got to be a friendly face doing that shit back in the day...

A Lindsay Robertson variety show, perhaps?

For Gabe and Lindsey to get married and have their own reality show.

obviously double dogs are necessary, also even though this show no longer exists, gabe's old liveblogs on huffpo about kid nation were of the highest quality. and lindsay should definitely branch out to puppies.
Score = 4
Puppy-branching-out SECONDED. Also, and I say this because I always feel like I should be called upon by those wanting video produced, I would recommend another foray into Videogum original video content. It can be done and I have faith that it can be made well.

You Can Make It Up is my favorite. Your critiques of most things are right-on and fun to read. I'm a little tired of videos that are just "cute" and posts that are just links to other sites. Aaand, would you, could you list events? This is my favorite internet read. Great Job!

Have you guys thought of interviewing people, Not really celebrities, but anyone you find interesting? Rich on fourfour did it with someone from top model and it was entertaining. I think you guys can do it in the vein of between two ferns, with humor, but also interesting questions that stupid journalist never ask.
Score = 0
Instead of interviews, maybe you could have a guest blogger once in a while? Like a comedian who writes well (Eugene Mirman, Patton Oswalt, David Wain) could review a movie or talk about some video or something?

I think my favorite childhood game of creating the most disgusting drink I could imagine in the kitchen and then daring a friend to drink it should NOT be done for Double Dog unless there is no video documentation.
I particularly appreciate the coverage of morning tv shows, as I would never otherwise get to see those gems. Thank you for suffering on our behalf.
As I don't live in NYC (or anywhere near NYC), special NYC events would just make me sad. Which might be the point.

I second this. Skins is not a great show. But i feel like it is the perfect show for you guys to watch. Because it's good enough to watch and to be entertained by, but so bad that it becomes very easy to make fun of.
The problem is it's a UK show. But maybe you guys can get into pirating?

Bring back double dog and I will be even more loyal.
As for new things.. I too really enjoyed Gabe's live blogging of Kid Nation. So maybe some more of that? A where are they now thing could be cool for reality tv show stars (but you could probably just repost the same post about working at a Burger King, but change the name).
But all in all, just keep being awesome.

I agree with more Double-Dog Dares. But mostly this is a sycophantic comment; because I just found this site like a week ago (I was searching for verification of Jackman pissing himself publicly) and proceeded to read about the entire site in a few days. SO GOOD. Then of course Rich at fourfour just verified my love by listing this site as one of the best things of 2008, so. Yeah! Don't stop!
Score = 2
I love Videogum, congrats Gabe and Lindsay.
Suggestions:
1. A clear homepage that has ALL of the recent posts. I often only see a post because it's linked at the bottom of something I'm reading, please don't make it so difficult.
2. An end to the drop-down menu where the Worst Movies are, as it interferes with my enjoyment of the GODDAMN EXPANDING AD that opens up when you get too near it.
3. Let go of year-end "Worst People" because The Beast pwns anyone who tries to go there.
4. LONGER posts. Moar.
5. Hosted links for Gabe & Max.
Score = 3
Personally, I love the hate, but more love for things would probably be nice. And it's a good idea to talk about movies that are playing in theaters.
I could never think of any dares, maybe Gabe could be forced to watch every episode of Family Guy. That might have interesesting results.
Score = 4
1. More commentary on ongoing shows- I agree the liveblogging of Kid Nation was great, so more of that kind of thing would be nice.
2. More coverage of new movies.
3. I agree with Garmanbozia, better structure to the site so that it's easier to find earlier posts.
4. Less Hills coverage.

yeah you guys should do movie reviews, not just gushing like lindsay did with slumdog (WHICH WAS FINE GUSHING I LOVE YOU LINDSAY) but like parts that were weird and funny even if the movie was the best ever.
-also more city related stuff. even if it's only related to film/television. it could be fun. you guys should go to premieres! and like, tell celebrities they're awful, i don't know if you have that capability, you're just babies, but stereogum does it and you're stereogum's sister/brother so there's that.
also good job guys! i've been reading this blog since May (when my internship started) and it's been amazing. let's all get married!

This blog is hilarious -- Gabe and Lindsay make my days better. Don't change a thing.

I have to say, this is THE only blog that I actually read every post of. I know there will be entertainment value in every single one. So for that reason alone, I will say keep up the great work friends.

i just realized in mid-november that this site was not just about music videos (for some reason i got that impression as stereogum's video-related-site?) and since then i have been making my way through every post you guys have written, and i'm in love with the site. i agree that the idea to host live nyc events would rule. also agree with the suggestions to post a little bit more about things you love - the hating on terrible things is awesome, but there are wonderful things out there too (like pushing daisies for a few more weeks, for example??), and i'd love to be reading about them here too!!

Worst movie of all time: The Contract, with Morgy Freeman and John Cusack. GOD awful!

My love for this site has been hovering around "obsessed fan" levels for several months. I actually (for reals) have made people watch stuff on this site at dinner parties. Like more than once. Like they hide their computers now. Good thing I'm lovable.
Keep the Friday Fights coming. I loved the recaps of Real Housewives of Atlanta. I also really enjoyed the Grey's Anatomy out of context clips. Yes to Double Dog (what got me hooked on this site). More vampires! I kid. (I don't kid.) I like the political stuff, but hate just about all of the reader debates they spark. More Chris Dane Owens. More awesome videos that I'd never find on my own. I *like* the "that's your girlfriend/boyfriend" stuff (but I'm like 12. Or 28 or something...).
Seriously, this is the first thing I read online when I get home from work and it makes me laugh out loud in an embarrassing-snorty-scare-the-neighbors kind of way. Thanks Gabe and Lindsay!
Score = 4
My first suggestion is to stop covering The Hills and Gossip Girl. Not because you guys aren't funny. But because i feel like i lose the humor if i haven't watched the most recent episode. And i just... i just cannot watch those shows. Maybe i'm in the minority on this one. And if i am, then i will just accept that.
Also, enough with the hulu and comedy central videos that i can't see in Canada. Although i recognize, that takes a larger degree of effort on your part (converting video and what not) so i forgive you guys.
Finally, Gabe, you kind of need to tone down the seriousgum.
All of my suggestions are kind of "here's what you're doing wrong" as opposed to "here's what you could also do!" Just know that i love you both. And you are my favorite blog forever.
Score = -3
i love the site - perfect "sitting-in-cubicle-not-working" entertainment.
but please, less cats! ugh. we get it, they can be cute SOMETIMES.
i second the idea for having interviews. that would be interesting. Gabe, you should interview M. Night Shamalanalanalan.

Double Dog suggestions? How about Gabe has to do a video of him doing the Soulja Boy Birdman, since he recapped the How To video so well, and Lindsay would have to walk around Brooklyn looking like one of the fine females from the VH1 reality shows - mini skirt, ugg boots and a Christian Audigier tee.

just as a balance to a couple other comments, i love the cats, and i love gabe's seriousgum. the occasional thoughtful college-y mini-essay tirade (laced with self-loathing of course) in combination with Box Cat are what make the site.

I too am a borderline "psycho" Videogum fan. Love this site. I am convinced one of the reasons I got laid off was refreshing Videogum eleventy times a day. So add one more to the Double dare pile. (I DD Gabe to show off more of that hot bod)

Def more Double Dog. I love the Family Guy marathon idea for Gabe but that's almost too cruel. How about if Lindsay were to be made to dress up in a cat costume and create her own adorable cat viral? More fun than dare would be if you guys both made some "The Room" fan tribute videos. There really aren't enough out there...

I love TWMoAT so much that I actually get kind of excited when I'm forced to watch crappy in-flight movies. Formerly, I would have grumbled; now, I just think, "I wonder if this movie would be a good candidate for TWMoAT" -- and more often than not, it is! Case in point: I just saw "Nights in Rodanthe," which I heartily nominate for the next round.
Otherwise ... Gabe and Lindsay, you're perfect. Don't ever change. (Lindsay, pay no attention to the cat-haters. Cats rule. Dogs drool, are smelly, don't clean up their own poo, etc.)

Can we please have weekly recaps of The City? i'm watching it now on mtv.com barf
Score = 0
So TWMoAT is basically movies that are presented as potentially being watchable but end up metaphorically stabbing you in the eyes, ears, and the movie enjoying part of your brain.
What about the inverse of this. Movies that have low expectations and look like they should be terrible but end up being surprisingly watchable. I dont mean ironically good like Point Break and i dont mean indie films. I mean a film you would never want to be near after seeing a preview, but you get tricked into seeing somehow and like it even though it pains you to admit it to yourself.
For example: Notting Hill. Pitched as a rom com matching the annoying Hugh Grant with the insufferably over exposed Julie Roberts playing of all things, a huge movie star. Sounds terrible. Watched with my mom some years ago and much to my dismay actually enjoyed it. Mainly due to the quirky British supporting cast and a great cameo by Alec Baldwin.
You get the idea. This could be a decent segment to offset the brutal negativity of TWMoAT with a running segment giving the opportunity to be negative and positive at the same time. Win-win. Or it could be a terrible idea. Thanks.
