Role Models Is Out On DVD Today

thumbnail icon: Role Models Is Out On DVD Today

Role Models, aka the only good comedy we've been given in the past five months, came out on DVD today (I never got around to seeing Four Christmases, but I think I can still stand by this.) If you haven't had the pleasure of seeing it, the comedy that was criticized by comedy nerds for being "mainstream" because it was directed by David Wain, whose fans want him to starve to death, wasn't actually mainstream at all -- the entire last third of the movie is a (spoiler) epic battle in a park between children and adults dressed in medieval costumes (it's more than that, but that's basically it, and it's hilarious.) And the movie's moral, about sticking up for the underdog, is more complicated than the marketing about boys becoming men would suggest. It's also totally earned.

And Bobb'e J Thompson is undeniably a revelation. Here's a clip of him slapping Stiffler:

Anyway, Role Models. Until I Love You, Man comes out, what else is there to do?

There must be some other movie called Role Models because the one that I saw called that was a hunk of shit.

Kenny, you do know that Paul Rudd is in this? Paul Rudd. You know, he's Paul Rudd. I can't believe you would write that about a Paul Rudd movie, I'm so clicking that down symbol and I hope your negative score is like -100. PAUL RUDD. (this movie was a hunk of shit)

You realize you've inherited a great responsibility with that name. Everything you say must be funny as fuck.

AD Miles was absolutely brilliant in this movie.... we also get to see MARINO AND KKS PLAY A MARRIED COUPLE! There's your sell to comedy nerds.... also Bobbe J Thompson is Tracy Morgan-esque here.... even Stifler and McLovin (pff real names) hold their own... totally bought it already.

I totally agree. It was uneven. Parts of it I so loved & then parts of it were dumb, especially Bobbe Thompson bits. Sorry, I don't find kids cussing & talking about boobs funny. Now Christopher Mintz-Plasse, gold. Or maybe it's just cause I have a cougar crush on him. And Ken Jeong, also gold. Especially the part where Paul Rudd kisses his hand & Jeong moves his fingers around...hilarious! I will be buying this movie!

Oh, and can we not forget Pineapple Express. I refuse to believe I was the only one who died laughing in the theater at that one. DIED!

Yeah, I tend to agree that Role Models wasn't as rip-roaringly funny as the staff and many of the commentators here at Videogum would lead us to believe. Truth be told, for awhile I thought we were all being sarcastic little cads about it being the only intentionally funny movie of late. Personally, I thought Pineapple Express was just a touch better.

Don't get me wrong, really loved RMs. I mean, Jane Lynch? Forget about it, but I think the praise for it here is reaching hyperbole, Paul Rudd and his Paul Ruddness aside.

I think The State guys can do no wrong. Give me Wain, give me Miles, give me Marino, give me Rudd, and I'm happy.

Second that -- can we start a petition to bring the state back?

Well, Role Models certainly was good.

But I must say, even if I was dragged by a woman, Four Christmases wasn't NEARLY as bad as I though it'd be!

Role Models is great, but I think it nearly blasphemy that you mention it and not Howard the Duck and it's first time release to DVD!

Caroline - That's a classic, but I can't decide. Is that my favorite skit or is it...

Obviously, THIS is the greatest State skit.

I loved this movie, and now get the rudd love.
every little sexual sounding sentence made his character do a WTF? face, which takes up 90% of my day, and the final battle was low budget epic.

I got dragged to that movie, thinking it would be shit. Obviously this movie had been marketed completely wrong, I didn't even know Christopher Mintz-Plasse was in the thing!

Anyways, long story short, amazing movie (minus Stifler).

I thought Stiffler was really good in it. Listen, it's a niche part that he has nailed, just like Michael Cera. Too soon?

I totally concur. Seann William Scott rules in this and in most of his movies. He does his thing as well as Vince Vaughn does his big mouth thing and definitely as well as Cera does his nervous shy guy thing. Stiffler has been golden since Road Trip.

Role Models was definitely best comedy I've seen in a long time. Best = the fake Wings song at the end. AMAZING. http://www.vanityfair.com/online/culture/2008/12/19/a-melodic-tribute-to-70sera-paul-mccartney.html
