The Barack Obama Chia Pet Seems Like A Reasonable Thing To Exist

I'm not sure if this is a new thing or an old thing, but the fact that it even exists in the first place makes it a crazy thing. Barack Obama Chia Pet, you guys:

Perfect. Just an entirely reasonable thing to exist in 2009. Total symbol of prosperity and hope. Display it at your school. Not weird at all.

Normal Human Being 1: What's that?
Normal Human Being 2: It's my Obama Chia Pet.
Normal Human Being 1: Where did you get it?
Normal Human Being 2: I ordered it off of the Internet. I was sober, and I spent money that I earned at my job in order to pay for it.
Normal Human Being 1: Sure. That sounds fine.

What? What's the matter? It's just a Barack Obama Chia Pet. No big deal. Order one (or 1,000 if you want) here. Or don't. Because it's INSANE and WEIRDLY RACIST and also HUH? (Thanks for the tip, Debby and Daniel.)

Seriously? You didn't know about this? Maybe it's because I'm from Chicago (Souff Side!) but everyone has at least 2 Obama Chia's...

OH SNAP! I'm from the south side of Chicago too! They can be found in every Walgreens... and the commercials have been running for MONTHS.

I love how the commercial is so creepily reverent, yet still SOOOOO disrespectful... The Chia people seem completely confident that this is a fitting tribute, though.

There is a joke in here somewhere about Chia Bush and possibly Dick Cheney, but I'm not Dlisted's Michael K so I can't find it. Is there some kind of internet certification program for coming up with zippy dirty jokes?

I don't see any weird racism here, just good old fashioned, color-blind awfulness.

The fact that it looks like an Oompa Loompa is a little racist. Oompa Loompas were Willy Wonka's slaves!

I think it's quite a stretch to call this racist. I think I remember seeing a commercial advertising a whole line of Presidential Chia Pets.

Ha. Fair enough! I was not aware of these Presidential Chia Pets. I rescind my accusation of weird racism, which was formed on the now disproven fact that this was the only Chia Pet of a president. In which case it would have been weirdly racist. But OK.

Well this is completely weird. When I heard that there was an Obama Chia Pet, I assumed it was being sold as a campy, albeit terribly tasteless gag gift. But apparently I was wrong and it's actually being billed as a proud statement about America and freedom? What? Why was that commercial so serious? You're selling grass-hair!!

I think Gabe's saying that it's kind of offensive to compare the kinky hair of Black people to Chia Pet-matter, which is basically what's happening here.

that's far more 'huh'' than racist. and it's no more disrespectful than commemorative plates.

Does the grass grow nappy? Is that why it's racist? Even still that's really just accuracy. We all know how seriously dedicated the chia people are to accuracy when creating groomable gardens atop the head of our commander-in-chia.

I saw this on TBS and was totally going to send this in as a tip, but thought it was too old to send in and that Gabe would make fun of me for tipping something so old. But Gabe would not have; it could have been my name in that tip bracket! Anyways, well done Debby and Daniel for having the courage I so completely lacked.

I think that all the other Real Housewives of Atlanta should spend some of their hard-earned allowances-from-husbands on making 1000 Chia Kim Zolciaks. Because, you know, irony.

I swapped out my Bush chia head for Obama back in January, like all patriotic Americans, which was good because I was running low on Freedom seeds (self-fertilizing, natch).

I'm glad it says "Barack Obama" in large letters on the base (neck?) because it actually bears a striking resemblance to Gerald Ford.
