One Nation's Trash Is Another Nation's Depressing Cake Oven

This is an actual oven used to make food for humans in Liberia, because the world is a really horrible place.

Reduce, reuse, re:(le.

P.S. What's Blockbuster? (Via Buzzfeed.)

I'm not sure if I should make a joke about eating some bad movie being for dinner or donate to UNICEF.

There are/were Blockbusters in Liberia? Or did this have to be shipped in?

My hunch is that the Hollywood Video drop boxes are used as toilets somewhere else in the world.

"Cake oven"? Do you mean "oven"? Or is that some offhand reference to "let them eat cake"?

"Hey, Zoey, throw that Miss Congeniality on the fire! Oh you got The Lake House too! Great, the combined awfulness of Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock will really get this fire going!" Oh, jeez, all jokes aside, I'm gonna go donate to a global relief charity now.

I know this is going to give me a -70 rating for my insensitivity, but what does this have to do with videos, beyond the fact that videos were once stored in her makeshift oven?

Having lived for a fair amount of time in West Africa, I'd have been pretty stoked if someone built me an oven out of a big metal box. I'm not sure what's so awful about this - it's reality for about 75% of the planet. (And will probably be reality for the other 25% in the not too distant future.)

Actually I shrugged at this picture because it just reminded me of what my uncle did to an old vending machine and a barrel in Jamaica. He jerks chicken and sells it to tourists. Why? So he can stash up the money and buy himself some rum and tend to his weed.

All I'm saying is that's just how it is in other parts in the world. It's pretty innovative!

yeah, shit like this makes me totally impressed with the resilience of human beings.

sure, it'd be awesome if everyone had the money to buy brand new stoves, i guess, but it would be even awesomer if we started doing MORE amazing reusing of shit that seems totally useless to our lame-ass western consumerist eyeballs.

i hope someday i learn to be a fraction as resourceful and self-sufficient as pretty much every single third world person over the age of 3.

(i've seen those documentaries where toddlers are chopping kindling with machetes and stuff and i am not even brave enough for THAT. i basically deserve to be swaddled and hung from a fucking palm tree for all the help i'd be.)

I doubt she thinks it to be depressing. Surprisingly, other parts of the world don't rely on flash-cook ovens as much as western peoples.

case in point; people happy without a GE stove:
