The Onion's Todd Hanson Explains Hate-Nerds

This is a clip from an upcoming documentary called The People Versus George Lucas, about Star Wars fans who don't like George Lucas. This clip is only a minute long and cuts off at an odd place, but it's still funny and insightful: Onion head writer Todd Hanson explains why true Star Wars nerds have to hate Star Wars:

Exactly! This is why it bugs me when my friends say "Why do you hate SNL so much?" I'm always like are you kidding me? I LOVE SNL. The moment in 1990 when I discovered SNL was the most important moment of my childhood. I just hold it to a very high standard. And now I have a name for it: I'm an SNL hate-nerd. Thanks, Todd Hanson for articulating that idea so well. (I don't give a shit about Star Wars, however.)

Does this mean that Gabe loves Seth McFarlane and only wishing that he would reach the peak of greatness that Gabe expects from him? Also Diablo Cody?

doesn't seem like a clear explanation to me. You hate things you love because the creators tend to lose sight of what they were doing and ruin them over time. Like the Office! And there's no comparing the fun and quality of the original Star Wars to the new ones. It's just Lucas going crazy and trying to cash in on a phenomenon when he obviously didn't understand what made it so popular in the first place.

so is this why when you play a hilarious clip from SNL you have to preface it by saying 'oh by the way the episode sucks blah blah blah it wasn't funny but it totally was' i think i genuinely hate your SNL posts. not nerd-hate.

Can I just hate Star Wars without loving it first?

I'm a Simpsons hate-nerd too. I have not regarded a single episode since season 8 as good enough, but I still consider it the best TV show of all time. Why do I feel this way

I'm definitely that way about South Park. And when I try to start a conversation about the flaws in the show's writing, the 13 yr olds on YouTube always call me retarded and then I'm all No U.
