So this video of a naked guy who was previously dressed as a wizard getting tased by cops at Coachella last weekend is getting pretty big (contains wizard nudity):
The naked wizard should go on late night TV to plead his case (I'm thinking Kimmel). But more important: the naked wizard is an interesting case of someone who appears to be a hero in real life (the crowd cheers him) but an object of ridicule on the web (all the blogs are making fun of him). He could be someone's sociology thesis! (Thanks to Jeffrey and Michael for the tips!)

Let me be clear, I am rarely one to defend cops and this one comes with a nice chunk of salt, but to be fair, those cops did try for quite a while to just get the guy to put his wizard costume back on. They are not really allowed to let people run around their naked they seemed to just want him to get dressed and have a good time.
That all said, I am not sure how many times the man needed to get the tase. I am also not sure exactly why three men that size, with training I assume, had so much trouble restraining one naked man that was high on God knows what at that point. They were having some serious trouble with this particular wizard. Maybe it was the pressure, you know with the whole world watching and all.

He has tons of horror stories from his teachers who are also cops about people who seem nice one second and the next are biting your thumb clean off. Actually, the whole point of any guarantee of free speech is to protect _unpopular_ speech. Otherwise, there is no need for any kind of protection. That said, I would not agree that this nudist situation is a case of free speech infringement.

The thing with tasers is that, while many think they are perfectly non-lethal, they do sometimes result in death, and probably more often than you would think. They tend to be used and overused in situations like this one, where the alternative is just less convenient. I mean the guy was being an ass, but he was just naked at a music festival, there's really no need to break out the taser, even if he was being completely non compliant. I think the cops were acting appropriately up until the taser got brought in, and they did give him multiple opportunities to redress and be on his way. Still, no need to taser the guy like a million times. in the neck no less. geez.

I think this is what's really at issue here...do we want to live in a country where if you disobey a police officer then "the next step is tasering" (and no, that's not what "the rules" permit).

Laura, watch the video where they grab his arms in an attempt to handcuff him and he locks up and pulls away. Tasering should should only be used in order to avoid using a more serious weapon - and even that is obviously controversial. Tasering can kill especially when used on an agitated person, or if the person is high or drunk. And multiple tasering? Very dangerous.

I found it quite difficult to watch. That said, the alternative, which some people are suggesting, is to have even one of these beefy cops go mano a mano with the Whiz and his Micropeen. One of those cops alone could have obliterated the guy, including blackened his eyes or broken his bones. Is that preferable to tazing? Tazing is temporary. There are marks if, as there were here, there are probes deployed. That's where the higher voltage comes in. A normal person complies after the probes. Micropeen showed little effect, probably because he was high. Then they drive stunned the guy (that's when they deployed it directly against his skin). That's less powerful, I'm told, than the probes. The guy should have used passive resistance to make "his point." Instead, the guy was slapping the cop on the shoulders. Right there, he could've been taken down. You don't touch cops. That cop took it really well. Finally, remember there was a crowd there. Tazing was effective, because it was a clean show of force (unlike a fist fight/tackle) that allowed the cops to gain control of the whiz relatively quickly. Also it was overwhelming, so that the audience was unlikely to get physically involved for the whiz, like they might've been, watching a cop square off in a fight. Also the guy started waving stuff in the cops' faces. For people who put their lives on the line, the cops were probably a little testy that the whiz had a weapon, or wld throw punches. And then resisting arrest. He should've sat down, gotten arrested, and argued in court for freedom of speech (although he would lose re: private land,and/or time/place/manner restrictions). That said, if there is a jury trial right for indecent exposure, guaranteed Molly McHousewife and Joe Retiree will convict him solely for his weenis.

Lets look at the facts here.
Indecent Exposure = A crime. You can be upset that it is and that's fair so write your congressman and complain. Or you can stage a protest at the capital if you really want and stand around naked doing so. Just file the necessary paperwork and protest until your heart is content.
All the cops asked him to do was submit and put his clothes back on.
He refused therefore they had no choice but to arrest him. Its their job. They would have gotten in trouble with their superiors if they did not. The man was breaking the law.
They then tried for a good minute to arrest the guy without a taser and he refused and started getting physical with them in refusing. Put yourself in their position. What would you do? Keep asking him nicely? No, you would use force to do so and if you'd prefer not to break their arms or legs or ribcage in the process (or your own for that matter) you decide that you can tase him to get him to submit rather than seriously hurt a guy. In the past they've resorted to much greater use of force.
But all this would have been avoided if he had decided to abide by the law and do as the officers had said. As soon as you break the law, some of your rights disappear. If he was on drugs at the time then he was breaking another law so it doesn't excuse him if he's not perfectly coherent. If anything it give the cops more reason to be careful with him because some drugs cause you to be much more impervious to pain meaning you could take a bullet or two and not even realize it and keep fighting.
If you want to argue that all drugs should be legalized then you can do that as well but that's not the argument.
The fact of the matter is that the guy broke the law and the cops gave him a chance to do things peacefully and he refused and resisted arrest so the cops handled him the best they could.
The hippies standing around don't understand this because they think everyone should love each other and smoke together but, unfortunately, that's not how the world works. We create laws to protect us from bad people (amongst other reasons) and the only way a society will function is if people obey these laws and if they have a problem with them then they petition their government to change these laws.
So I think the cops did their job and you won't have to ever worry about getting tased if you submit to the cops when they attempt to arrest you and fight your fight in the court room. As soon as they attempt to arrest you and you refuse, you're in for an unpleasant time.

I think both the cops and the guy were wrong.
The cops shouldn't have tazed him in his neck and near his heart. EVER. It's dangerous, and potentially lethal. He is naked and therefore doesn't have pockets and therefore can't carry a gun, so tazering him in potentially lethal places is not done.
The cops should've realized he was on drugs, and should've tazed him and tried to resist kneeing him in the groin. I mean, yeah they can use a tazer if someone resists arrest. But don't use excessive force other than that and struggling. I agree with other people saying the wizard dude got angry again because of that. And I agree that it's hard for a police officer to cuff someone who resists. But you're a police officer, you're trained, and you should've been more patient.
