Zachary Quinto Is A Terrible Hand-Actor
As a registered Trekhead (assistant to the northeast district Captain Trekhead of the Earthship Fanterprise [huh?]), whose favorite movie of all time is now Star Trek*, I've obviously started a "Zachary Quinto" Google Alert** so I can keep up on all the Spock News. And that is how I found this disturbing story about my hero's*** troubles on the set. From News.com.au:
It's probably the most famous greeting in the universe, but the simple Vulcan salute left makers of the new Star Trek film with a galactic-sized headache - because Mr Spock just couldn't do it.After much head-scratching, experts on the $150 million blockbuster - which boasts stunning high-tech effects - hit upon a low-tech but logical solution - gluing actor Zachary Quinto's fingers together, The Mail on Sunday newspaper in the UK reports.
Quinto, 31, admitted he found it impossible to form his fingers into the distinctive V-shaped gesture, saying: "It's much harder than it looks. Seriously."
Yikes. They glued his hands together? Star Trek? More like Todd Browning's Freaks (1932). It may be harder than it looks, but harder than "completely not hard at all" is still really easy. Come on, Zachary Quinto. Now I have to take down my shrine of you****. This kid knows:

My roommate told me this and I burst out laughing! I was all, "Seriously, glue?! Who can't make that hand gesture?" Then I slowly realized, I was the only one laughing. Turns out she can't make the gesture either and in her words it's a, "common disability." At which point I asked her if she also saddened by the fact that she is unable to throw up 'West Side'?
She answered me by stalking out of the room; I guess it's a touchy subject for her :-)

Its funny you should post this, because last week Mr. Quinto dispelled this rumor during an interview with Newsweek. The interview is "Spock on Spock," with both Mr. Nimoy and Mr. Quinto, and it's amusing/a little awkward to watch. Here is the link to the interview and 1:55 is where he does the famous gesture (although he does seem to have to try harder than Mr. Nimoy). So you should go ahead and update/take down this post and stop spreading these vicious rumors.

I really want to make the "Oh, but Z. Quinto didn't have any HAND problems with ME! Whoa! Yowza!" joke, because Zach does in fact play for the guys' team, but public-domain humor like that is usually what straight people expect to hear from a gay guy (thanks, Will and Grace, for years of idiot stereotyping) - and the regulars on this site need something besides Cher puns and bitchy asides about hair to update what seems to be a circa-1995 clue deficit. Quinto makes me wish I was a gay man. I kind of feel bad for him, because when I googled him I noticed that people seemed to think he's straight. I don't think he's denying it, but he hasn't made any effort to get a fake girlfriend either, which is refreshing.
