Stewie Is Gay, Says Awful, Awful Seth MacFarlane

thumbnail icon: Stewie Is Gay, Says Awful, Awful Seth MacFarlane

Stewie, the annoying baby on Family Guy, is gay, says creator and moron, Seth MacFarlane in an interview with Playboy. Perfect. From the New York Daily News:

"We had an episode that went all the way to the script phase in which Stewie does come out," MacFarlane, the show's creator, says in the September issue of Playboy magazine. "It had to do with the harassment he took from other kids at school. He ends up going back in time to prevent a passage in Leviticus from being written: 'Thou shalt not lie with mankind as with womankind. It is an abomination.'

"But we decided it's better to keep it vague, which makes more sense because he's a 1-year-old. Ultimately, Stewie will be gay or a very unhappy repressed heterosexual. It also explains why he's so hellbent on killing [his mother, Lois] and taking over the world: He has a lot of aggression, which comes from confusion and uncertainty about his orientation."

UGH. Yeah, that EXPLAINS why he's so hellbent on killing his mother and taking over the world. TOTALLY. Just like this gun explains why my brains are all over the place. Woof. This guy is just unbelievable. Everything that comes out of his mouth is a classic gem that you should polish and put in a museum of THE WORST GEMS. And the worst part about this whole thing is that since they canceled the episode in which Stewie "comes out," the only thing that actually makes him gay is Seth MacFarlane alone in the recording booth thinking "this is a gay person's voice." Hmmm, that might not actually be the worst part. The worst part might still be the sentence "it also explains why he's so hellbent on killing his mother and taking over the world." IT'S A TIE!

Meanwhile: a table read of the Family Guy "abortion" episode. Great.

Seth MacFarlane: Hey, aborted gay baby, I want to finally give a voice to your cause. I really think public discourse in America could be strengthened if my animated cartoon on the network owned by Rupert Murdoch that features talking intellectual dogs, disabled policemen, and a registered sex offender took on hot-button issues like abortion and homosexuality in adolescence.

I never thought I'd come out defending Seth MacFarlane, as he really is the worst, but the show is about hyperbole. As somebody who actually did go through his home life as a closeted gay child, teen, and man having to repress all sorts of shit in dealing with my parents and relatives, if I find this innocuous and mildly irritating at its worst, you people shouldn't be all RAWROUTRAGE on my behalf. Really, this PC tread lightly around the homos shit needs to end already. It's patronizing and far more unsettling than anything this guy could say about his pedestrian cartoon. It's 2009. Our black president just gave a dead openly gay politician the Medal of Freedom. Let's move on.

(Fingers crossed for the lowest rated comment of the week!)

What are you even on about? He just said that he thinks that being gay makes people want to kill!!! There's no treading lightly round anything. It's the most stupid thing ever said. It's like worse than Glenn Fucking Beck. Do you want to kill someone? Well if you do I'm pretty sure it's got nothing to do with you being gay. It's because you're mentally disturbed and wake up every morning and think "Shit, I'm the worst" only you wouldn't be because Seth MacFarlane is.

No, you inferred that. I don't know about when you're one, but when you're a teenager, at least, having to be closeted and terribly confused sexually around your friends and family can cause plenty of antisocial behavior and feelings. Like I said, the show is about hyperbole. It's always going to be over the top. Next you're going to go on a rant about him saying black people are stupid because Cleveland talks slow, or that all physically handicapped people overcompensate because Joe is overly aggressive. The show, as poorly as the execution is, deals with social issues by poking fun at them. If the message you take out of this is that Seth MacFarlane thinks gays kill people because they are gay, then you probably belong in the Glenn Beck school of faux moral outrage.

Family guys doesn't "poke fun" at social issues, it makes "jokes" at the expense of everyone who is not Seth McFarlene. You don't get to be an able-bodied, white, straight dude and not get called out on your fucking consistent offensive bullshit. Sorry, Anonymous, but we are not living in some kind of post-racial, post-feminist, post-homophobic wonderland of social justice just because Obama is president. Family Guy is obviously not our biggest problem but here at "Videogum, we call 'em when we see 'em.

I know it's horrible to ever watch Family Guy but I do. And anyone who does will tell you that Stewie is very obviously gay. They reference that fact in every single episode. It has nothing to do with stereotypes or a 'gay person voice,' and a lot to do with Stewie disliking woman and being very, very, very attracted to men. There has just never been a moment where he looked at the camera and says "I am gay." And if there were, it would be bad writing (insert 100 predictable comments about how Family Guy is already bad here).

I think what makes MacFarlane particularly frustrating is that he will express a position that most of us would agree with (repressed homosexuality is unhealthy, don’t vote for McCain/Palin) in the stupidest, most counter-productive way imaginable (a matricidal, megalomaniac gay baby, Nazis wearing McCain/Palin pins). The effect is that I kind of agree with him, even though I hate every word he says. It’s bothersome in the same way that I will wince at 9 jokes in a row on Family Guy and then laugh at the 10th one. I hate that this awful man can make me laugh.

"Next you're going to go on a rant about him saying black people are stupid because Cleveland talks slow, or that all physically handicapped people overcompensate because Joe is overly aggressive"

You're missing the point. He hasn't said those things. I'm confident (or, at the very least, hopeful) that he knows these things aren't true and that the jokes are making fun of stereotypes but in this case he is actually quoted above as saying that homosexual repression is a reasonable explanation for the homicidal desires of a megalomaniac. The End. He's the worst. (Also, for someone using the word "hyperbole" you sure did miss it in my obviously over the top comment. I did actually type the phrase "Glenn Fucking Beck". In all seriousness (SERIOUSGUM!) I'm gay, and was closeted and repressed for years, and I completely get the point he's making. That kind of repression can express itself as over-the-top aggression. And I remember the controversial episode last season was "Meg becomes a born-again Christian after going to a rally." Jesus Christ. I'd just like to point out 2 things: 1 - No one is spared in Family Guy. Not even MacFarlane. Stewie is used to make fun of gays, Cleveland is used to make fun of blacks, Joe is used to make fun of handicaped people and stereotypical "heroes", brian is used to make fun of intellectuals by portraying them as snobs and alcoholics, Adam West is used to make fun of politicians by presenting them as psychotic, paranoid morons, and finally Peter Griffin is the perfect example of your average white, heterosexual guy, being represented as a complete idiot. MacFarlane fits best the description of Peter Griffin and he knows it.

2. He never said that being a repressed homosexual brings forth homicidal feelings. Well, at least, he didn't say it in a general way. Ed Gein's murders and obsession with female cadavers comes from being over protected by a highly religious, controlling mother. Not everyone who's over protected by a highly religious, controlling mother will unearth corpses to make some costumes out of the skins!

If you watch the video after the table read, (god these live table readings they do are awful. who does that? Thank god they never did one for Friends) he says a show hasn't "done" abortion since Maud, 35 years ago. Obviously, Seth hasn't watched any other show since Maud for the last 35 years so he missed the epic Degrassi episode where Erica has an abortion. And who could forget the Woodlands Critter Christmas ep of South Park where we all learned about abortions from three little cubs before Kyle had Satan's baby ripped from his ass. Neither of those eps were prevented from airing. He's the worst because he always thinks he knows what he's talking about. To give an analytical profile of a cartoon character based on psychological references makes him worse that the worst. It makes him a PRETENTIOUS GIT. When he stops recycling actual FOOTAGE from previous episodes of his shows and creates a new show with a completely different format.... wait.... nevermind, I still won't be listening to anything he says. Nothing with change that.
