Let's Get Dressed Up In Costumes And Pretend!

I know that acting is just playing make believe for money, but this is getting ridiculous. Two new photos have emerged today of famous Hollywood actors wearing elaborate costumes on the sets of their new movies. We have Russell Crowe dressed up as Robin Hood, and Meryl Streep dressed up as Julia Child. They both look pretty hilarious, although I will give Meryl Streep a pass on this one, because she is really good at her job of pretending to be other people. Russell Crowe on the other hand: NO SUCH PASS. I know that when you get paid millions of dollars for a role you have to OWN IT, but there's something so ridiculous about him walking through the forest with a leather shrug on and a silken-stringed bow and arrow like he's some kind of total badass. People keep saying he looks like Gladiator with a bow, which makes sense if you thought Gladiator looked like the Peter Pan Guy in sandals.

And actually, can we just chill with Robin Hood? Like, forever? Every 10 years there has to be a new Robin Hood movie? I totally support the idea of a vigilante who strives to make the world a better, more egalitarian place, and if Hollywood wants to take that theme and Clueless it up with a modern retelling because they're all out of ideas anyway duh, then fine, but I'm pretty sure swapping out the tights for a pair of trousers doesn't solve the problem of this being an antiquated hero who is totally irrelevant and even laughable in the modern world.

Julia Child, on the other hand, total Dark Knight of the kitchen.

So I watched alot of PBS cooking shows growing up: Julia Child, Yan Can Cook, that Cajun guy, etc. and I don't want to sound like an old fart but Julia Child? Is nothing sacred? Do we NEED a Julia Child movie even if it's Meryl Streep? A: No.

The Julia Child still is from the movie version of Julie & Julia, it's not necessarily a Julia Child bio-pic, more the story of a girl in her early thirties who is disenchanted with life and finds her true passion through cooking her way through Julia Child's Master the Art of French Cooking, Volume 1. That is, if the movie stays even remotely close to the storyline of the book, which, let's face it, we all know it won't.

etc

Well, she was a spy for the CIA and did bring French cuisine into mainstream America, so it's already more worthy subject matter than Notorious or most other biopics.

Disagreed. Robin Hood is awesome. I don't know if I would have picked Crowe, but I'm quite happy there's a new movie. One movie every ten years is fine with me. Oh, and bows are the shit.

Agreed, and we still need to make up for that Costner debacle.

Eh, I think I have to take issue with the latter. Prince of Thieves is a boss movie.

what

We're supposed to believe that Russell Crowe is agile in anything besides throwing telephones?

If I'm not mistaken, this Russell Crowe version of Robin Hood has Nottingham as the good guy and Robin Hood as the villain. So it is a bit of a different telling.

Robin Hood: men in tights was the best robin hood movie that has ever been made or that will ever be made. Everyone else should just stop trying.

Really? Was the soapbox factory closed today Gabe? We're ranting about the so many adaptations of Robin Hood?

Geez, Gabe, ease off Robin Hood. I would say in the AIG era, the idea of a man who steals from the rich to give to the poor is just as relevant as it always was. Not that we should hop on the populist outcry bandwagon, but maybe Russell Crowe can wake me from the boredom coma inflicted on me by Kevin Costner 18 years ago. Then again, he was partially responsible for American Gangster... and Master and Commander... and A Beautiful Mind... and Proof of Life... and... sheesh, when was the last time Russell Crowe didn't belie his talent?
