But Where Is Taylor Swift's Apology?

thumbnail icon: But Where Is Taylor Swift's Apology?

A lot has happened in the last two days (NOTHING has happened in the last two days*) since Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. He posted an apology on his blog (PUNCH THE KEYS, YOU THE MAN NOW DAWG). Deciding that an ALL CAPS blogpology written by an assistant would not be sufficient, he then went on Jay Leno last night and apologized again, to Taylor, to his fans, and to his mother's ghost. Obama has now called Kanye a "jackass" and he's probably going to have to issue his own apology.

But where is Taylor Swift's apology?

Obviously, Kanye West was wrong about a lot of things in this situation. For one, it was simply rude to interrupt a young woman in the middle of a speech, and to steal her moment from her. For two, he was wrong to think that there was any integrity in the MTV Video Music Awards. For three, Beyonce won in the end anyways, so that made him look Triple Dumb Cereal.

But on the other hand:

Kanye has always been a wide-mouth can. And "Single Ladies" IS far superior to whatever the Taylor Swift song is that won I don't even know. And most importantly, his outburst has created one of the funniest Internet memes in awhile. e-Silver iLinings. So it's not like nothing came out of this. Besides, the man has apologized on late night television, which seems to be the one thing America wants more than anything else. Constant televised remorse.

And where is Taylor Swift's apology? She was on The View this morning (after which Kanye apologized anew) and I heard no apology from her.

Sure, she is the one who was wronged in this situation, but amends were made. Beyonce gave up her Beyonce Time so that Taylor could have more Taylor Time. If anything, this whole thing has made Taylor Swift more famous than ever. She should be thanking Kanye. But since public thank yous never seem to gain much traction, she might as well at least get an apology in there. For one, she can apologize for continuing to call herself a country singer. I HEARD YOUR SONG, TAYLOR SWIFT. That is a sub-grade Kelly Clarkson song is what that is. That is Avril Lavigne without the skateboard-flavored lip gloss.

Secondly, she can apologize for pretending like it was the fans and not herself who were injured. WILL NO ONE THINK OF POOR TAYLOR SWIFT'S FANS? No, David Blaine. None of these self-less heroics, please. Her fans were not really injured. If anything, no one was injured. And if she would like to apologize for making it seem like someone was injured when no one was injured, that would also be acceptable.

But, at the very least, she could apologize for tying up the already unreliable F train!

MAKE IT RIGHT.

P.S. Kanye's blog seems to be down. CHARLIE SHEEN SHOULD WRITE A LETTER TO THE PRESIDENT!

*Seriously, like, I know that we are all just trying to figure out how to keep our eyes occupied until they fall out of our heads and return to dirt, but so much attention has been paid to this NONTROVERSY that it's almost as if there were not two American wars being fought in the Middle East, a pandemic flu infecting millions, and a collapsed global economy. It's almost as if MTV were still relevant!

Taylor, on the other hand, ate half the marshmallow, saving the other half, in her wide eyed innocence, in case the man never returned with the second marshmallow, in which case she knew she would have to depend on part of the remaining half of the marshmallow for sustanence and use the rest to break off bits and lay a carefully spaced trail so as not to retrace her steps when finding her way to the end of this ridiculous run-on sentence. Smart kid.

Why are Leno and the View Harpies so surprised and thrilled that these people "kept their commitments?" "Waaaaaah, Kanye embarrassed himself and made me more famous than I ever would have been without him. I'm definitely not going to do any previously scheduled major television appearances today. Just leave me alone!"

Also, what the fuck is up with Taylor Swift's teeth?

I dunno; I find the idea of "what's the big deal, she's no one special" to be a shitty argument. If anything, it makes Kanye look worse since he's "defending Beyonce's honor" against this teen pop chick who probably won't last another year.

But I agree, there are many more important things going on now than this. But the battle for a public option didn't have Kanye involved. We only got Joe Wilson, and that's already old news.

#2 What? is the View always awful? I had heard it was but that is the most I've ever watched of it.
#3 Didn't Taylor Swift write a song about breaking up with a Jonas Brother...which one, Ricky or something? She was "news" after that. Kathy Griffin talked about her in her act so you know that means popular (see #4)
#4 Kate Gosselin? Wtf? Who is watching her kids? Just Kidding Kate, no gives two shits about you anymore. (or at least not for much longer *fingers crossed*)

Taylor Swift is a Red State Sweetheart. She was the top selling artist of last year and her album is on track to be one of the biggest of the decade. She doesn't play very big in urban markets so I can see how you would kind of not know who she is or how it is that Beyonce could lose to her but she's young, new and super popular. Have the awards ever really been about which video is really the best?

I don't really care about Taylor Swift, I don't really like Kanye, and I hate Jay Leno. But I am kinda sick of seeing people say (even tongue-in-cheek) that Kanye was doing Taylor Swift a huge favor. She sold more albums in the US in 2008 than anyone else. And her album is currently the second best-selling of 2009.....and Michael Jackson had to die to slip past her into #1!

It is quite possible that more people woke up this morning and said "who is that black guy who is yelling at Taylor?" than said "who is that girl that Kanye is yelling at?".

Living outside the US, I am genuinely befuddled as to why Kanye interrupting someone at the fucking VMAs is such a Big Deal. I've still never heard any of her songs (is she America's new sweetheart or what?), and asking what his dead mom would think is awfully absurd. Seriously, Leno/the View/Mr President/every blog on my google reader, I've had enough of this high school musical. Cut it out now.

There's only so much political fervor that a pop culture blog can incite in terms of pointing out the futility of the general population to get their minds off of some stupid awards show incident. I'd estimate that amount to be somewhere around none at all.

Wow. I hadn't actually watched The View clip at first. But holy crap - "I just got my first condo!" I'm astounded. Is this something that everyone else achieves except me? And it's her first? Wow. Is that early, or late in the white celebrity game, for her to get that first condo now? Should we be tweeting our congratulations to her for this? I don't know how to feel.

It's not like announcing you got your first Platinum Record, or an achievement of yours. It's announcing the monetary consequences of your achievements. Are there teenage girls (boys?) out there, jumping around on their beds, hugging their sister (while their mother gasps in amazement), thanking their lucky stars that Taylor FINALLY got her first condo - that elusive accomplishment they'd been praying she would achieve?

Taylor Swift had a perfect opportunity on The View to rise above and say that despite the fact Kanye's actions were wrong, she still forgives him. But she didn't do that; and that is why people are still talking about this. She is painting herself as a big victim, and that makes me mad.

And if someone points that out, then everyone's like "SO BECAUSE HE DIDN'T KILL HER THAT MAKES IT ALRIGHT?". Well, no, it doesn't make it alright, but somewhere in Cambodia, a child just lost a limb by accidentally stepping on a landmine. So that makes Taylor Swift's "problems" seem non-existent in comparison.

I just can't wait until they collaborate for a song on Taylor's (or Kanye's) next album. It will combine auto-tune and synthesized steel guitar. It will win a coveted "spaceman" at the MTV video music awards. It will probably be called "Sorry Doesn't Cut It." Most importantly, it will finally finish what Bubba Sparxxx started in bridging the gap between country and hip-hop--the two genres that are typically the exceptions to people's "I like all music except..." preference on Facebook.
