The Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences Is The Gillette Razor Of Motion Picture Academies

thumbnail icon: The Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences Is The Gillette Razor Of Motion Picture Academies

Five "Best Picture" nominees is for pussies. WE'RE GOING TO 10 FUCKING NOMINEES! From the Oscars website:

The 82nd Academy Awards, which will be presented on March 7, 2010, will have 10 feature films vying in the Best Picture category, Academy Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Sid Ganis announced today (June 24) at a press conference in Beverly Hills.

"After more than six decades, the Academy is returning to some of its earlier roots, when a wider field competed for the top award of the year," said Ganis. "The final outcome, of course, will be the same - one Best Picture winner - but the race to the finish line will feature 10, not just five, great movies from 2009."

WHY STOP THERE? WHY NOT NOMINATE 20 MOVIES? OR 30? WHY NOT NOMINATE ALL OF THE MOVIES AND THINGS WILL REALLY GET INTERESTING? WHY AM I YELLING? I'm sorry, I'm just so PUMPED by this NEWS. OSCAR FEVER! I can't wait until next February 2nd when they announce the actual 10 films that are nominated. That is only a 100 million years away!

I'm razzing the Academy, because we're friends like that and we love to pal around. But in their defense, I am definitely twice as excited about the Oscars as I was before this announcement. You do the math.

Whaaat? There are barely five movies worth remembering every year (case in point: Juno's nomination). How the fuck is the Academy going to come up with ten?! This might be your year, Transformers 2!

Was Juno the fifth best movie of 2007?

No, not my point. If the Academy can't pick even five good movies, what's the point of ten? If you have to scrape the bottom of the barrel when choosing only a handful, then maybe adding more undeserving movies to the pool isn't going to help anything.

I guess it's no longer just an honor just to get nominated.

Let's just give McG his Oscar and go home.

I think this is great. It'll open up the playing field to stuff like Zodiac and maybe some genre stuff. Maybe we'll actually see some actual comedies in there (the kind that doesn't feature 'quirky' pregnant teens with hamburger phones, and are actually funny).
But this is a ratings decision, nothing else. More movies that casual audiences will have actually seen will be nominated, and that means more people tune in for the big night.
The only problem is that if they keep the director's category at five, it'll be pretty clear who the frontrunners are.
I am a nerd.

The Academy should have been prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for heaving Wall-E to the "Best Animated" ghetto last year anyway.

I nominate "Stranger Danger" ten times. That's like a movie right? I think it's hard sci-fi.

I think this is going to make the most exciting Oscar race ever! I'd have loved to see Wall-E nominated for best pic. This year something like that may actually happen! Has anyone seen "UP"?

People are going to think that this will "open up" the Oscars and allow for more interesting nominations, but it won't. At all. We'll just get five more movies that are just like the first five -- shallow, midcult tripe that are forgotten before the ceremony's over.

It looks like all those fanboys e-mails about the Dark Knight being snubbed actually caused a change.

i dont see the big change here. so instead of making the wrong choice out of five movies, theyll make the wrong choice out of ten movies.

Though not everybody is in favor of the decision: http://www.newsy.com/videos/oscars_and_then_there_were_ten
I think it will prove popular after the fact, everyone has had a movie they thought should have been nominated hopefully the nominees will be reasonable choices.
