The Wrestler 2: Before The Fall

Over the weekend, a video surfaced in which WWE star Chris Jericho is confronted by some fans after a match in Canada, and although it is difficult to make out exactly what happens, it appears a woman spits on him, and then he punches her in the face. And then he punches a security guard in the face. And then he drives away.

This is basically viral marketing for The Wrestler. That's basically what this is. If you look really hard, you can see Todd Barry in the background. He's like, "in 20 years, you will come work for me at my grocery store behind the deli counter and it will be miserable." It's as if Chris Jericho hasn't seen the cautionary tale about what can happen to people whose fame depends on a fleeting physicality in an industry that promotes illegal performance drug use and terrible decision making. It's like, does he even go to art house cinema at all?

this is a question for all female videogum readers: if you spit in somebodies face, would you be all that surprised if they punched you?

My fiance is in law school, and the only two interesting things I've ever heard from him are included in this video: first, spitting on someone is considered assault (so, bearface, I suppose I would expect to get punched....in fact, I think I'd rather get punched than spat on, if I knew the punch wouldn't deform my face or anything). Second, apparently professional fighters have to get their fists licensed as weapons. So he's going to get into WAYYYYY deeper trouble than a normal person would. (Any lawyers/law students reading this, I know I probably used the terminology incorrectly...don't get all attorney on me)

Chris Jericho's not a professional fighter, he's a wrestler, ie. entertainer. Also, why are people going after him? I'm sorry I know this, but Jericho's the kind of wrestler guy that even non-wrestling fans would like.

wow i didn't know people has such strong opinions on chris jericho, he hasn't been relevant in my life (or the life of anyone i know) since i was 9.

also i love the vaguely haunted 'he punched a girl' not that it's okay, but he punched a grown woman who spit in his face. slightly different situation.

That bitch deserved it. Honestly. She spit in his face and tried to hit him. I would fucking kick in her the ovaries myself. Just because he's a public figure doesn't mean hes infallible. He's morally and legally clean from this. Well, maybe not morally.

i have to beg to differ with the whole 'she spat in his face and she deserved to get punched in the face.' i feel like, as a professional wrestler who spends a lot of time in fight choreography sessions, he is aware there are other options available to him to restrain someone than just punching them in the face. how about a good old fashioned shove? how about grabbing a wrist and twisting her arm behind her back? how about being a grown-ass person and realizing that her spitting on you like a classless retarded troll doesn't give you permission to behave like a troll yourself?

agreed, spitting in people's faces is uncool and one ought to a) know better and b) expect serious consequences, but i think saying the obvious next reaction SHOULD be punching her in the face is totally overdoing it. shame on her for being nasty and gross. also, dude is huge and weighs a zillion pounds, probably all muscle, and he is using his hulk powers for the forces of evil. with great power comes great responsibility.

the barest minimum of impulse control is not asking too much. even my 3 year-old nephew knows that biting me is not an acceptable response to being restrained. and when he gets overheated and forgets and tries to bite me, i have enough impulse control to not shake him until he's unconscious because i'm a fucking adult.

probably just 'roid rage, anyway. for all we know she was aggressively blowing kisses at him and he snapped.

According to this report in the Vancouver Sun, he spit on her:

It was hard to make out in the video, but if the newspaper's account is correct, fucker should probably go to jail. If she spit on him, then it is much less clear cut. It still must suck to get mobbed by idiots for losing a staged fight.
