How About These Pygmy Jerboa Babies?

thumbnail icon: How About These Pygmy Jerboa Babies?

Yesterday I posted that video of that cute tiniest rodent, the Pygmy Jerboa, and you guys were all "That's totally creepy and not cute at all!" So, fine. As a blogging professional, I can accept that not every cute animal I throw at the wall is going to stick. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE BABIES? These BABY Pygmy Jerboas, which appear cutest at the 1:45 mark, are undeniably cute. Its over:

(Headphones up, the music is dreadful):

I'm glad we got that settled.

They aren't cute. They ARE awesome, I want an army of them, and perhaps a freakishly large one to ride on, but they aren't cute. Just find an appropriate word, that's all.

It's totally that horrifying tail that ruins it for me. If it had like a shorter, stubbier tail it would be alright. I'm basically the Anna Wintour of rodents now.

I'm with you on this, Linds, I think they're hilarious. Especially with the apparent lack of balance, like when the one in the other video fell backwards right off the scale. Weird, for sure, but totally cute.

When did these become a thing that is so common that people are just keeping them in their rooms, on toilet seats, and taping them for youtube videos left and right? I thought I was aware of every cute, possible-pet and now I've been blindsided. What other animals do I just not know about and that also appear out of nowhere like aliens?

Not as cute as the last video! But I am with you in the cute camp, Lindsay. Except the creepy clown-katamari soundtrack kind of ruined this for me.

It's a song! A real song, not some video game song. It's by The Nails, it's called 88 Lines about 44 Women. Watch here:

And the melody they took is at 0:39.

I like the two step process of put baby in mouth, hop back to shelter. Very QBert/video game-ish.

Also - how quickly can we make that song its own meme? That's the worst thing I've ever heard.

I'm pretty sure it was "settle down, Chris Brown" which has more of a sing-songy ring to it. I only know that because I've been repeating it in my head after every post, trying to see if it applies.

Chadams nailed it: these things are Q-bert cute ("QUTE-BERT"? Help.) - but only as far as a physically-impossible videogame character can be cute. Which is to say, it can be terrifying when cast into real life, and yet... compwetewy iwwezistiblez!!1

The video itself is cute, but when they showed the little pink babies it just made me flashback to the time we had pet hamsters when I was little and they had babies and basically ate all of them =(

I think for some people they look (particularly from the front) like some kind of sci-fi alien creature with a head and giant feet sticking out the bottom. Then toss on a tail for good measure. It doesn't match what some of us envision as a reasonable evolutionary result on earth. That's why they seem creepy, but that's our problem.

I want to be cool enough to like these things and act like everything's fine, but they disturb me at this very basic, instinctive level. I feel bad about it but at least some people find them overwhelmingly appealing, so it offsets my natural repulsion.

Omigod I want one so badly! Their faces are very similar to the Chinese hamsters I recently raised, but I don't have them anymore. I really would like to find where to get one, I have researched a bit and found that they are endemic to Pakistan, but not anyone who breeds or sells them. Could anyone provide a bit of advice for me about finding a breeder? Obviously there is some way to obtain them, as many people have post videos such as this but they do not say where they got them. I personally think Pygmy Jerboas arethe cutest things I've ever seen, and resemble a chick/hamster/gerbil mix. :)
