30 Rock: Muppets, Lemon's Secret Past, And YouTube

thumbnail icon: 30 Rock: Muppets, Lemon's Secret Past, And YouTube

As Barack Obama might say: "Look, it's hard to write about 30 Rock. It's just the best show. Just watch it." So in the spirit of our new-ish President, just go watch 30 Rock already. There are muppets, and an old embarrassing video of Liz, and the funniest line (or a really funny line) was Jack's list of things he wanted to do before he turned 50:

"Go to Disneyland, ride in an airplane, kiss Peggy Fleming, live in a house with stairs, beat up a Russian, hit mom with a car."

(Or possibly when Tracy quoted Robert Browning.) It was all great: watch. the. show. Okay, now, here's an old man on YouTube who loves 30 Rock as much as we do:

Yay! Also from this episode, you know how Jack says he has "a Google News alert for "Tracy Jordan Ridiculous Disaster"? Over 3700 results already.

I must be in Horseville... or was it Horsetown? And then similar "wordplay" applied to Tang. Hilarious.

"Chocolate Rainbow is too good for TGS."

Of course Jenna got the name of the song wrong. That's what you call an "easter egg" for the super-fanz. C'mon, Lindsay. You write about the internets.

Please, please, please make Jenna sing Tay Zonday.

I don't think that was a Tay Zonday reference at all.

No. You're right. She must be talking about that other Chocolate Rainbow song that everyone is singing these days.

My mistake.

Nope. You're both wrong. It WAS a Tay Zonday reference, but it was intentionally wrong in the sense that Chocolate Rainbow is like Janie Jimplin. That's one of Jenna's trademarks.

And, as someone who actually went down to New Orleans, I take special humor from this joke: "The things those people were doing to the Superdome were terrible."

So thankful that 30Rock is there to pick me up after The Office lets me down week after week. I love The Office as much as the next person, but lately... really? Michael is just insufferable. Now he is quiting? And the show is getting all sad? I don't understand it anymore.

But yeah, 30Rock, perfect, thanks, woo!

What Office do you watch? It's always been depressing. Hell, its best episodes are the downbeat ones. I mean, I agree the show -- just like every show currently in their 5th season -- has been pretty weak this season, but the last few weeks have been a big upswing in quality. I mean, how could anyone hate the reveal of Prince Family Paper's fate?

Fair enough. The show has always been a bit of a downer, but at least it was funny. Am I the only person who is just plain tired of Michael Scott? His character has run into a dead-end of simply being obnoxious. Nothing is unexpected anymore because he's gone over the edge so many times. He's the center of most episodes, but there's nothing left to explore there. I'm interested to see how this "getting fired" story arc finishes up because at least things might get switched up.

Posted by: Funtastik profile link  in reply to  TS's comment at 03/27/09 5:20 PM  | Reply

Yeah, I think the problem comes from the fact that Michael's a tricky character to find the right balance to. He can go from too obnoxious and outrageous one episode to way too subdued in the next. It only gets messier due to the fact that, let's face it, he began the show as basically the bad guy. Plus there's a big demographic that doesn't obsess with the minutia of TV shows like we do and just want to see Steve Carrell do silly shtick. So there's a lot of factors involved.

I went back and watched the first and second seasons and somehow season three doesn't live up to those. The only part that made me laugh last night was real life Liz stomping down the hall like a muppet. I think I do that a lot.

video = nightmares, also.

I loved the reference to Walt Disney's cryogenically frozen head.

Stop it. 30 Rock isn't funny. People just have this undeserved hard on for Tina Fey ever since that Sarah Palin bit. Really, I have never seen a show that consistently goes for the easy joke as much as 30 Rock. Its lucky to have not been canceled by now, though i imagine the next year or so will see that come to fruition.

Ahem...many of us, myself included, loved this show, and Tina Fey in general, looong before we even knew who Sarah Palin was. This show won the Emmy for Best Comedy before Tina did her Palin impersonation. Also, the show is consistantly on tons of critics "best of" lists. I do have to say, if 30 Rock goes for the easy laugh, it does so with more jokes per minute than most shows have in their entire episodes. And, in my opinion, a laugh is a laugh. Monty Python knew that. Mel Brooks knew that. You can have highbrow humor up the wazoo, with intricately unfolding jokes that take ages to reveal themselves, or you can have a bunch of cowboys farting around a campfire or Frenchmen launching cows with catapaults. Funny is funny. If 30 Rock isn't to your taste, that's fine, apparently many people feel the same way, because they want to watch dumbed down TV like American Idol ("thinking...hurts...brain...too...much...arrgh!"). But don't say it's overrated, just because many critics like it and you don't.
