Look, things happen. I understand that. Of course I understand that. You get caught up in the moment, and you temporarily lose perspective, and when it returns to you, you’re just as baffled as everyone else as to how you got there. “Wha happened?” indeed. So, it’s not like I don’t get it. I do get it. Kind of. Runaway train, never coming back. Wrong way on a one way track. But someone might still need to explain to me how we got from this completely reasonable, technically impressive, and contextually appropriate encore after the Shostakovich Cello Concerto No. 1 State of Mexico National Symphony, in March 2009:

To this:

To this (mildly NSFW!):

Right.

This girl knows what’s I’m talking about. Someone was like “Tina Guo is going to breathe new life into classical music for a whole generation of teenagers,” and someone else was like “no, she is not.” (Via GoldenFiddle.)

Wha happened? I’m pretty sure that meth happened. Don’t do meth, talented classical musicians. Even if it lets you play really fast.

  2. Yeah, but at least that cinematography was amazing- it can’t be easy filming while being blown away by such raw power.

  3. Where’s Ghostface Killah’s verse?

  4. How many people are gonna have to get fired around here before Gabe puts a
    NSFW tag on this ish?

  5. I think the saddest part about this is that the poor cello, unable to cope with the fame and fortune thrust upon it, has become the latest victim of Hollywood’s obsession with skinny celebrities. poor thing, embrace your curves!

  6. I herd Tina Guo iz composing a sweet new jam 4 New Moon.
    Itz gonna B sooo tight!

  7. This is off-topic, but does anybody else get their comments “held for moderation” (ie = disappeared forever in the blades of the Lawnmower Man) when they try to use html tags for links? It’s happened to 3 of my comments to date.

  8. Drugs, the answer to your question is drugs

  9. She’s just growing as an artist, you guys!

  10. Honest to God, how long do you think Gabe has been holding onto this youtube clip? I think he saw it roughly 4 seconds after posting Monster’s Ball from last week, promptly pooped his pants, and wrote this post.

As someone from within the orchestra/classical industry, I can tell you why this happens. You make no money as a classical musician. Some of those musicians there made less than a hundred dollars for their performance. There’s much smaller an audience than rock concerts and many more performers. So, you’ll find the more marketable musicians like Tina Guo and Vanessa Mae getting signed to major labels for one album deals, in which they have absolutely no creative control over their output. As for why is metal-ish, well there’s a considerable attraction to classical music within the metal community. They like the technical side and complexity of it. So, if you get a hot asian pumping you FOTBB over distorted guitar and double kick-drums, the angsty 16 year old peach-fuzz + neckbeard all black in the summertime demographic will gladly latch on to it, because that gives him something to hate his parents and masturbate to AT THE SAME TIME.

  12. This sounds like a Limb Bizkit B side (if there ARE b sides to Limp Bizkit, then I…don’t even know how to finish that sentence.)

  14. When Bruno is the drummer in your death-metal cello band, all things are possible. See you at The Gathering next year, Tina Guo.

  15. That was nice of Rose to loan her that dress. Can’t believe the 90s are back already!

  16. I knew that image wouldn’t work…wish the “preview” had. Color me embarrassed.

  17. Jeez, what a one trick pony.

  18. One thing leads to another, until one day this gentlewoman finds herself in Juggalo court on 1 count of “being ridiculous, musically and aesthetically.” In front of a jury of her Juggalo peers.

  19. this is what happens when you spend your youth constantly practicing cello: you enter your ridiculous goth phase at 30 instead of 13 like everyone else. see also: rasputina, apocalyptica.

  20. Hey guys, what did Tina Guo’s right knee say to her left knee?
    Nothing, they’ve never met!!!

Get it?? Cause she always has that violoncello in between her legs AND she’s slutty! You get it.

    • Oh, I thought her right knee never say anything to her left knee because knees don’t talk. I wish I had magical knees! :(

  21. And here I thought Flight of the Bumblebee would just die the quiet death it deserves. Thanks for nothing, Tina Guo.

  22. Am I the only one who was expecting this to be a cover of The Fixx song? I am? ok then.

    Flight of the Bumbleboobs!

  24. Oh wow. You surprised me, tits.

  25. Everyone has their own style of masturbating furiously. I think we know hers.

Also, I’m straight on hearing any version of that song for like another good year.

  26. is it culturally insensitive to call this “Fright of the Bumblebee”?

A half-Japanese girl shredding the cello? … So… did Rivers Cuomo direct the music video or what?

  28. I like to think we’re watching these videos in reverse order. Maybe Tina Gao was discovered on YouTube and asked to record and finally invited to play professionally with a real live orchestra. This is a success story people!
And all from a music video whose treat was “think Queen of the Damned meets The Cell.”
    Dreams DO come true!

  29. I down voted myself for not being technologically savvy.

enjoy the silence on electric violin, anyone?

  30. I actually have that dress in the first video (in “mermaid”) from a wedding I was in. Conincidently, I also have the outfits from the other two videos. not from a wedding I was in.

  31. It’s like the Saw series barfed all over Flight of the Bumblebee.

  32. um…no…

  33. lol i used to be facebook friends with this girl

  34. You guys are so cute.

Hope you can make it to one of my concerts coming up… maybe the concerto engagements in Venice? Rome? or the one with the Jerusalem Symphony?

And be on the lookout for my new Industrial Metal Band, CLAN OF GUO with Jason Miller on vocals from Godhead.
