Zach Galifianakis went on Letterman Wednesday night to promote The Hangover (opening today!), telling a seemingly ad-libbed story about working as a bus boy in a mob-owned strip joint where “the women were very mean,” while he lived in his friend Miles’s closet, until the joint was raided and he threw his cummerbund in the trash and never looked back. Zach’s ability to tell outlandish lies possibly true stories that apparently he’s told before to David Letterman is almost as good as Amy Sedaris’s (The Master), and just going out there and making shit up is clearly the most entertaining way to be a late night talk show guest. Also, he drools on himself to keep people away from him on the streets of New York City. (Update: everyone is all like “No way dude that story is true, so fine, but I liked it better when I thought it was made up. Zach still rules though.)
I believe the only true part of that story was the drooling part. The Hangover, you guys! Can’t wait!

Clearly Mr. Galifianakis has ample experience hosting his own enthralling talk-show: “Between Two Ferns”. As awesome as this interview was, it could have benefited from some forced thigh tickling and awkward flirting; Zach knows what’s up.

The mob strip club story is not a new story. He tells the same story in more detail in an interview with A Special Thing in 2006. Since this is the second time I’ve heard the story and the details stayed the same, I’m sure he is telling the truth.

I think it’s pretty easy to tell when Zach is being real and when he is doing his andy kaufmanesque stuff. It’s nice to see him be himself.

Actually he was telling the “truth”. he told the same story a few years back on a podcast for apecialthingradio . if memory serves, his roomate was AD Miles.
Tom Waits was the best at improvising hilarious/ridiculous bullshit in his (Late Night) interviews… Zach and him should Eiffel Tower Amy Sedaris and they can all drool on each other.
