There was a trend in action movies in the mid-to-late ’90s where any hobby could become the foundation for a violent adventure. It seemed to coincide with America’s brief (and yet overlong) fascination with X-TREME sports. Let’s call it the Dan Cortese Effect. So, you had action movies about skydiving Russian spies, and adrenaline-addicted surfing bank robbers, and skydiving American spies. If it was on ESPN2, it was the foundation for a movie about spies and or bankrobbers.

I’d always found this trend silly and boring. It seemed like a corny way to put a new spin on a worn out plot, and to work the words “rush” and “what a rush” into scripts. But that’s just because we were doing it wrong. They’re doing bascially the same thing in Thailand, and it is working out AWESOME. The problem was that we were mixing action adventure with all kinds of sports, when we should have just been mixing everything with one sport: incredible Muay Thai fighting.

After the jump, the trailer (via FilmDrunk) for Fireball, you guys, the world’s first Muay Thai basketball movie.

Talk about hoop dreams, right?

Have you seen “Born to Fight”? It may in fact, shit on Fireball. At one point a soccer player fights a rebel militia with FLAMING SOCCERBALLS. He even manages to take out a sniper. It is also so emotionaly overraught that it’s exhausting. The Thais go all out.
