Today, Bruno: The Movie is out in theaters to inspire drunken frat boys in desperate need of a catchphrase, and a flood of downtown Halloween costumes. So let last night’s appearance by Sacha Baron Cohen in full Bruno character on a late night talk show be his last. It has never been that funny. Even he seemed to have grown sick of it. Or at least tired. In an appearance yesterday with Matt Lauer on the Today Show he was basically just doing the Ali G voice.
ICH BIN ENOUGH. Or whatever.

Du hast Bruno.
The only thing I ever nodded at in agreement while reading Vice was, “You should never see a man’s inner thigh.”
This clip really brought that back for me. Too intimate!
I just read this first-person account about the hotel-clerk scene in Borat, and I’m just going to copy it here since it’s vaguely related. I like Sacha Baron Cohen, but this gave me a little more sympathy for the people who get pranked in his movies. It’s kind of long (sorry):
“I almost avoided the whole mess because I initially turned them down because we were very busy. But, they came back to me a couple of days later and said they really wanted us to be in this travel piece. The location scout came to the hotel and ?interviewed? several people for the on-camera role.
I wasn?t keen on doing it myself, since my dad had died recently and my family was experiencing those horrible firsts: the first Father?s Day without him, his birthday, etc. In short, I wasn?t my usual perky self. After interviewing everyone, the location scout came back to me and said, ?You?re the one that we want.? I turned them down, and, then, they came back, again ? and I felt guilty that I wasn?t doing my job. I agreed to do it on a Sunday night.
I pulled myself together to help them, only to find myself the subject of a practical joke from which I could not extricate myself. The producers of the film didn?t know me or my background, other than I fit the profile of someone they could picture looking ridiculous on screen. It wasn?t that they were unpleasant or unkind. It was that I wasn?t even a person to them.”
Robin Rubbermaid is a Debbie Downer.
Only most of the time. ;(
“Bruno is a flamboyantly gay entertainer who makes people uncomfortable, like David Letterman” LOL!
I thought it was better than Conan’s appearance, to be honest. I am guessing this will be the movie club pick of the weekend.
maybe i’m alone here but i still think it’s funny.
Bruno aside, the Top 10 list needs to go to the retirement farm for the Old Yeller treatment. It’s never been that funny.
Gabe, you say “drunken frat boys in desperate need of a catchphrase” as if you aren’t aching for one as well. VERY NIIICE.
I never even got to see the top 2. Number 3 was so bad that I let out an involuntary ‘ugchh’ and then clicked back. And then clicked forward and commented. But thats not the point!
All the moral arguments/hurt feelings aside, I find Cohen’s character commitment mesmerizing. I personally haven’t seen a character that I forget isn’t real since Pee Wee Herman. Kudos for that.
I’m sorry, kahdooz for that.
Good timing with your (self-) righteous indignation, since the movie comes out on Friday.
Fun Fact: Baron Cohen’s cousin is a professor of psychology at Cambridge. If failing university meant asking him what-Sascha-was-like-as-a-child questions instead of intelligent ones during lectures, then so be it. Maybe this is why I could never go to Cambridge…
