Up until now, I have never actually experienced the trite but (it turns out) real generational gap between young people and old people when it comes to music, where the old person genuinely just “doesn’t get it.” Oh, do not get me wrong, I think that the music that young people listen to is garbage! I pine for the days when your mother and I would do the Lindy Hop to Benny Goodman’s clarinet, down at the Knights of Columbus hall. But up until today, I have always understood how people could like music that did not appeal to me. Sure. Boy bands? OK, whatever. Norwegian death metal? Yes, sometimes. Top 40 country? Even racists have to listen to music.
But this week Brokencyde have released a new video for their song “Booty Call,” and for the first time in my life I honestly feel like a grandfather whose hips ache when a storm’s approaching. This literally sounds like noise to me, in a way that noise bands never did. Wolf Eyes are like celestial angels in comparison. If I was driving you to the mall and this came on the radio station you had selected, I would make you turn off your “so-called music” and put on NPR, or maybe silence. I would tell you stories about how hard it was for me to get to school, and how when I was your age we listened to REAL music, like Pulp, and Magnetic Fields side projects.
Seriously, only follow the jump if you hate yourself.
I’m sorry, I’m all out of Werther’s butterscotch. I shoved them in my ears and died.
