Earlier this month, it was announced that Martin Scorsese would be directing a biopic about Frank Sinatra. Sure. “Natch.” (Yuck.) But while that may be true and make sense, what is not true and what does not make sense is the rumor that Jamie Foxx might be up for the lead role. From the Telegraph UK (via FilmDrunk):
Foxx, who won a Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Ray Charles in the 2004 film Ray, reportedly considered to be “perfect” for the role. If he is chosen for the part, it will be one of the most prominent examples of “colour-blind” casting in Hollywood history.
Also in the running are George Clooney, Leonardo di Caprio, Harry Connick Jnr and Justin Timberlake.
An unnamed source told the Daily Express: “Cool is colour-blind. Jamie would seem to be born to the role. Magnificent singing voice, totally convincing acting ability, like Frank himself, born the wrong side of the tracks, rags to riches, makes it big against the odds, has his brushes with authority. The guy’s a gift.”
Yes. Jamie Foxx was BORN to play Frank Sinatra. That is the exact perfect word to describe Jamie Foxx’s qualifications for this role. Is there a Nobel Prize for just using the perfect word? Because we have a winner.
But why do they keep saying this would be colour-blind casting? This isn’t colour-blind casting. This is colour-wrong casting. He is the wrong colour. I mean, I know that Barack Obama is president and everything, but if you made a biopic about Obama’s legendary role in tearing down American racial boundaries and he was played by Martin Sheen, even if Martin Sheen was BORN to play Barack Obama, I feel like people would be confused and maybe really, really upset. I mean, I know that this whole thing is just a made up joke anyway, but also no. In any case, I feel like the whole conversation is beside the point since Jamie Foxx would never get this role, since it was clearly written for Vinny Chase.

In other news, Danny Bonnaduce is set to play Stevie Wonder in McG’s epic biopic set to come out in 2012, they year of the apocalypse.
Woof.
Harry Connick Jr? Um, yes please…
Is that Mr. Banana Grabber?
Anyway, basically everyone ever is wrong for this part. I love the idea of the movie, but I haven’t heard a name suggested that didn’t make me groan. Johnny Depp made me groan slightly less, but not much.
Yep. And while I admit that accent will be tough to get around, I think Jr. is one capable guy.
They should do age-blind casting and have George Clooney do the whole thing, from the obligatory chiildhood back-story to the metaphorical “drawing of the final curtain” ending.
I nominate Whitney Houston to play Dean Martin.
Well I dont know about you snobs but I am still psyched for P Diddy to be the next James Bond and Beyonce to be cast as Wonder Woman.
OK, Fine, I am not. But those were (almost) equally stupid ideas.
Little-known fact: Jamie Foxx only got the part of Ray Charles in Ray after Martin Sheen turned it down.
Why not cast a mop and bucket as Frank? Why not be inanimate-object-blind? BREAK THE CYCLE.
Al Pacino played a Cuban version of Al Capone and it was the greatest film ever committed to t-shirt. Free your mind.
Casting:
Cate Blanchett. Richard Gere. Christian Bale. Little Slumdog Millionaire Kid. Zombie Heath Ledger.
It’s because Ole’ Blue Eyes was more than one thing.
It’s a metaphor and it’s brilliant.
Give me my Independent Spirit Award.
So by “magnificent singing voice” they mean “compliments of auto-tune”, right?
But more seriously, while it is somewhat of a stunt, there’s really no reason to stick to non-color-blind casting out of some arbitrary appeal to historical accuracy. Sinatra’s childhood was only a couple generations removed from when Italians weren’t considered “white”; arguably, casting a white, even Italian, actor in the role cannot capture the emotional reality of growing up disadvantaged in an ethnically homogeneous enclave, because that’s no longer a recognizable Italian-American experience. I think that’s what they’re getting at with the “wrong side of the tracks” stuff.
Please don’t be example #6 from here: http://tinyurl.com/6a3aan
PLEASE don’t be that guy.
You are so full of shit that I almost admire you.
Hate to be Mr. Smartypants here, but this whole Jamie Foxx thing started with a joke that Gawker made: http://bit.ly/h3XPx

“An unnamed source told the Daily Express: ‘Cool is colour-blind. Jamie would seem to be born to the role.’”
An unnamed source, Daily Express? So someone said to you “Cool is color-blind. Jamie would seem to be born to the role. Oh, and it is of the utmost importance that you keep my identity a secret.”
Look, okay, I admit it: it was me. I am constantly fucking with the Daily Express.
Martin Sheen. That’s quite a stretch. Leave the portrayals of Obama to African-American actors like Fred Armisen.
No this will be great, a great chance to put Robert Downey Jr. in blackface to play Sammy Davis Jr. and Dane Cook to play Joey Bishop
Ugh, its terrible how right you are. If this were to happen, it’d just be a way to open the doors to allow shit like that from occurring. “Well if Jamie Foxx can play Frank Sinatra, why can’t Julia Roberts play Rosa Parks?”
Since I come from an Italian-American family, I will get my Frank SInatra biography from my father/brother/uncle/cousin/grandfather/tug boat captain etc. whether I want it or not.
Having said that I nominate Daniel Craig b/c shirtless Sinatra is the best Sinatra
I saw a pic of Daniel Craig’s pee pee and it was
but maybe he’s a grower…?
A reference from the season finale of Entourage mere weeks before the new season starts. Now I know why you own the keys to the internet.
Jamie is great but i don’t think it would be a good idea for him to play Legendary Frank Sinatra.
i agree with the part saying nobody would like if Obama was played by a white man or MLK for that matter. but it is a rummer so either way i look forward to see this film:]
