It’s 2009, so one of the entries at the Cannes Film Festival is a cat video. Nothing against it or its maker or Midge the one-eyed cat, but you gotta work a whole lot harder than just running around real fast to make it in the cutthroat world of internet cat videos, where the competition is fiercely cute, able to use props such as boxes, and has to hold its own against upstarts like Hamsterballs. Here’s the trailer for The Great Race, currently in competition at Cannes:
Maybe this is considered tres adorable in Cannes, but Midge would never make it on the mean streets of the internet’s cat video skid row. (Thanks for the tip, Sara!)

I think that more of a cute old man video than a cute cat video.
I’m 37, I’m not old.
So what you’re saying is that Cannes will basically take any movie at all?
This is actually in the Cannes Short Film Corner, which isn’t part of the main competition. Basically every film submitted gets in the Short Film Corner, it’s more of a market than a festival.
THe footage of the man and the cat looks like a lame youtube mashup.
I once had a cat who lost an eye in a cat fight. His name was Mississippi.
Can you beat that Midge? Cause I doubt it, from the looks of that trailer.
