Guys, please know that if you ever find it exhausting or a downer that I complain and criticize things on a daily basis, you will never find it more exhausting or more of a downer than myself. And while I feel like we have been down this road before (more than once before at that) I may not write about them as much but there are lots of things that I enjoy thoroughly and think are very good and exciting (example: HOUSE OF CARDS) and one of those things is Game of Thrones which returns to TV at the end of March, which is very soon. Yes, the Oscars suck, but this show doesn’t! Are you excited to see new episodes of this TV show? Do you guys like stuff? What do you like the most? Who are you wearing? What is for breakfast? Can I go back to bed now?

  1. I had chicken nuggets and cheesecake for breakfast! It gets an A++++ from me!

  2. Gabe – I live to complain. It’s part of the process, and to be honest, it’s necessary or you won’t ever appreciate something as amazing as AGOT.

    • You appreciate dudes all the time! That’s like your whole thing!

      • Good point, but I also complain a lot. About how certain facetacos disappeared but are now reappearing but for how long? Will you leave me in the dust again? I can’t take it.

  3. I am such an unabashed fan of the books and the show that it borders on embarrassing. I’m reading through the books again right now, and I don’t even care that I know what happens. It just gets better because I notice more and more stuff and oh god I’m so excited.

Also, Jon Snow is totally the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark.

    • I agree with the last bit, but maybe stick some spoilers on there for the non-book readers!!

      • I figure it’s not a spoiler because it’s far from being an established fact.

        • Oh no! I’m getting downvoted!

Most of the stuff that supports the theory is in the first book, which came out in 1996, so maybe I also shouldn’t tell you how Romeo and Juliet ends either (they die). But really, the man’s written 5 books in the series and this still hasn’t been made clear, so y’all can take your spoiler alerts and shove ‘em.

    • the books are amazing! my sister and i break our fast together because of the books.

      • My brother bought me a Targaryn mug that is my constant breakfast companion… And I have the board game. Ice and FIre nerds unite!

        • Can we talk about the board game?? I feel that House Greyjoy has an unfair advantage in starting on the Iron Islands. But then again, who wants to be the Greyjoys? So maybe it balances out.

          • Which board game? I got the shitty one by accident, the one with the cards, when I wanted the one that’s like Risk! I always play House Targaryn because the dragons give the most points in battle.

          • I didn’t even know there was more than one board game! I totally meant the Risk-esque one, which I highly recommend. (Be the Greyjoys.)

    • I just read the first 3 books over Christmas which were great, and now I am on “Feast for Crows”, and I am in need of some moral support. Tell me it gets better!! Where is everyone? Who are all these people?

      • It gets better! The last two follow the same timeline, and a lot of the favourite characters are in the other one… I personally liked #4 because I love Brienne and I think the Iron Islanders are interesting, but pretty sure I was in the minority.

      • It doesn’t. I’m sorry.

      • I did back to back marathon reading of the entire series too, and AFFC is an awful boring downer right after the awesomeness of ASOS. But, having re-read the books out of order a bunch of times since, there are cool parts to it that don’t resonate at first. Unfortunately, you start thinking the only reason Feast sucks is because you want to get on with everyone else’s story line, until book five comes along and oof. All your favorite characters you’ve been dying to catch up with are the worst suddenly.

    • My only worry is that this seems to be the consensus (re: jon snow’s parentage), and there’s nothing George R.R. Martin likes more than to take things that people expect and then shit all over them. “Oh? You want these characters to meet? Maybe they will… in book 7!” “What’s that? You have a favorite character? Ok. Dead.” “You have a theory about Jon Snow’s parents? Interesting. How about you’re right but as soon as you find out I kill him. Or I let him live but his parents are Eddard and some random villager? I’M GEORGE R.R. MOTHERFUCKING MARTIN AND I WILL TELL MY STORY THE WAY I GODDAMN WANT”

      • “ALSO I GAVE EXPLICIT INSTRUCTIONS THAT IF I DIE BEFORE I FINISH THE SERIES ALL MY MANUSCRIPTS ARE TO BE BURNED AND THEY WILL REMAINED UNFINISHED!!!!!”

He’s kind of old and clearly does not take care of himself. Also it takes him 5-6 years per book. I’m really worried, you guys.

        • I’m hoping the show lights a fire under his ass, in terms of finishing some more books. And he may eat nothing but bacon soaked in honey (I assume, because everything in the book has bacon in it and everything is soaked in honey), but he is super rich and the super rich live forever because they can afford great health care. Also, apparently he gave the key plot points for the rest of the series to the producers of the show so they can finish the show if he dies before finishing the books.

        • must read entire thread before responding. eeep.

      • spoiler alert, george r.r. martin is old as fuck and will probably die before finishing the series.

    • Extreme nerd alert: Someone else had to explain this to me, but I really love the theory that Lyanna (aka Arya version 1.0) was the mystery knight at the Harrenhal tourney that went after the people who bullied Howland Reed, and it makes me sad that all the older Starks are dead (except Benjen?) so we’ll never know much more about what they were like.
I also really, really want to know if it was Ned who was in love with/”bedded” Ashara Dayne or if it was Brandon.

      • SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER but we might still get to see it first hand, and get to know the older Starks better, because now Bran can see the past and present (and maybe future??) through the trees!

        • True! I do think that what Bran saw before was Lyanna and Benjen at Winterfell, so maybe he’ll see them again. But probably only Howland Reed knows what happened at Harrenhal, and Martin has said we’ll at least never get a P.O.V. from him because he knows too much for it to be interesting.

Slightly different: I just read the Dunk and Egg novellas, which are pretty good and interesting in terms of learning more about Westeros, but there’s so much tourney stuff and heraldry in it that after I finished I started mentally designing my own. What’s the next step, LARPing? I really hope the next step isn’t LARPing.

          • We will for sure meet Howland Reed at some point though, because he is the only one left who can tell us about the Tower of Joy and Lyanna’s death and (probably) Jon Snow’s real parentage. I think it would be neat to find out for sure about the tourney at Harrenhal, but I think it will be left as a little easter egg for the close readers.

    • I’m so glad to be talking about this series (the books and show) on this site!
But I can’t not point out that while Jon could be Rhaegar’s son the fact that he gets burned in the first book/season gives me some doubts.
Also a friend of mine is convinced that he’s actually the son of Robert and Lyanna, making him one of the older Baratheon bastards.

      • I think that GRRM has said that non-burning isn’t truly a Targaryen trait, but rather was an effect of the dragons’ magic for Dany. Because obviously Viserys was legitimately a Targaryen and he burned just fine.

  4. I am unreasonably excited to see new episodes of this show, I fucking love stuff, I like puppies and sunshine most, I’m wearing Rietman’s, I had a banana and toasted walnut bread with hummous and cucumber, and no you can’t go back to bed it’s after 10.30am for pete’s sake!

  5. I sadly have TV, not HBO (still a relevant joke, I’m sure)… but I will watch the fuck out of this when it makes it to DVD. (It’s not TV, its DVD — nailed it!)

  6. My breakfast has been half a bottle of tums because I’m too old for Oscar drinking games. Been re-watching season one of GoT all last week, so so excited.

  7. I am excited for this. It is the first in a handful of shows coming back that I am excited for (unfortunately it is still approximately 35 billion years before we finally get Breaking Bad back).

  8. Justified is a good show but also a bit of a disappointing show because it was better in season two. And some other stuff, I mean it was never a perfect show, and also what is up with Raylan’s marriage, also it’s kind of odd how little Raylan and Boyd’s plots have to do with each other nowadays.

  9. i do like stuff and i both had for breakfast and am wearing blue bottle coffee.

  10. This morning, like most mornings, I seem to be wearing at least 75% dog hair.

I am wearing Old Navy, H&M, H&M (vintage 2006), Target, and tights from this fancy tights store in Harvard Square. Sorry losers, I get my tights at a fancy tights boutique in Harvard Square. I am insufferable!!!!

  12. I like lots of stuff, but I also like to complain, and I do not think that show is inherently great! I think it is pretty stupid! I have lots of opinions!

  13. Oh man, I love so many things and I’m so excited about Game of Thrones coming back. Also coming back March 31, Doctor Who. And it is about time.

I also learned today that Veep is coming back on April 14. So we have that to look forward to as well!

  14. I love that there’s at least one show that’s great that I don’t have to worry about getting cancelled. 18 seasons of Game of Thrones!

  15. We are subscribing to HBO just for GOT and will cancel it as soon as the season is over. I’m also excited for the return of Doctor Who, and Sherlock is supposed to begin filming series 3 pretty soon too. And I had a breakfast bar this morning and am wearing H &M, target, lucky brand, and my trusty chucks!

  16. In my experience, it’s WAY harder to write well about things that are good and enjoyable, and usually not half as fun to read. But thank you, Gabe, for providing a space to discuss GoT. It’s just so great! Love Tyrion, love Brienne, love Sansa, love Varys. Love everyone.

I do find myself a bit annoyed with Dany’s constant pronouncements of raining down fire and brimstone (literally) on anyone who slights her. Bitch, your khalasar consists of babies and old people and your dragons are the size of housecats. Maybe cool down on the threats until you can back ‘em up? I’m actually a bit of a Dany stan, from reading the books, and I don’t like feeling this way!

  17. Just a reminder that Emily Clarke and Seth Macfarlane are still a couple. Opposites be attracting.

    • I imagine that all of Emilia’s friends texted her last night saying “…him?” and then she cracked open another bottle of wine and drank it by herself.

  18. I’m wearing a cheap suit and I enjoy the following things:
    House of Cards
    The New Girl
The Office (IDK, I’m really liking this season)
    The Walking Dead videogame
American women who are experts at dating European men
Rappers who kill the rap game on a daily basis
    Animatronic wolves
    Blogs about bad movies
    Watching The Simpsons in French
    Small dogs
    Cats
    Alcohol
    Feist

I had some multivitamins, tea and a small bag of Takis for breakfast.

  19. I am wearing my Game of Thrones Jon Snow at the wall Zelda shirt. It is a cool shirt. Will wear it again.

  20. Can’t wait for more Sansa and Jon to get some and Tyrion fanboys and apologists to make me hate a character that I really enjoyed before I had to see all their bullshit excuses for his bitter, self-pitying behavior towards his child bride! Except only the first two.

  21. Hey, does anybody want to discuss Enlightened? That’s the only HBO show I’m watching right now.

    • Just noticed that we have to fill out a questionaire. So in the order Gabe set out above: some stuff is good, Indian food and sword fights, not wearing a person, peanut-buttered toast, and it’s probably very late where you are, so yeah, go to bed.

  22. I love a lot of things; Bunheads, Parks and Recreation, pretty much all animals, talking about bad movies, podcasts with Paul F. Tompkins, books about Teddy Roosevelt, and many more! Game of Thrones is very much not on that list, so I’ll just be excited something I actually love, Veep, has its second season coming soon!

  23. I like crushing on actors that others find not so attractive (i.e. Benedict Cumberbatch, Cillian Murphy, Alan Rickman). I also enjoy GoT and am very excited about it’s return. I’m wearing stuff I bought at a thrift store (not velour jump suits or whatever – just jeans and a sweater) which reminds me that I love the song Thrift Shop and I will NOT apologize for that. I’m also wearing some Lay’s Sour Cream and Onion chips remnants because they are stuck on my coat. It’s really cold in my house so yes I’m wearing my coat and eating chips. What else, what else……I love the Comedy Bang Bang podcast. Oh, and I love Videogum and reading all the monsters comments because you are a truly funny bunch.

Now, let’s get some dragons up in this bitch!
