Adam trailer, you guys:

Woof.

Obviously, movies should be able to tell the stories of characters with Asperger’s. They are as deserving of having their experiences committed to film as anything that Bruce Willis has ever been involved with. And in some sense I suppose romantic comedy is as good of a genre as any, and perhaps better than some (horror, psychological thriller, and porno, for example, would be worse). But there’s still something kind of icky about an otherwise by-the-book romantic comedy, that appears to have lifted the “quirky” character of Adam directly from the Wikipedia definition of the syndrome that defines him. The fact of the matter is that for as ridiculous and outlandish as other genres can get, romantic comedy perhaps more than any other, depends on the big hook to differentiate new films from all the painfully similar films that came before. And in this romantic comedy, that hook is a mild form of autism. Yuck.

Or maybe I just need to be more Kelly “Daymare” Bensimon about this.

“Oh, that’s cute.”

Better?

  1. A little cutesy, but not horrible. Better than Grey’s Anatomy’s recent god-awful attempt at portraying Aspies..

  2. meh. Punch-Drunk Love did it first
    sorta

for a legitimately beautiful (and real!) movie about asperger’s…”billy the kid.” it’s one of the best documentaries i’ve ever seen. not really funny, but AWESOME.

and i think this movie looks pretty sweet. i would love a man who loved space as much as i do.

they could’ve just left out the whole “i have aspergers” thing out and just titled this movie, “dating a astrophysicist is tough”. because my boy is one, and whereas i wouldn’t say he has aspergers per se, kid is fucking weird.

    • I agree, they made this movie into an aspergers expose because its popular. But they probably could have turned it into dating me with very few script changes.

  5. you dont have to have aspergers to NOT want to see someones birthing video

  6. aspergers porn would be amazing.

    • I, for one, am fully supportive of socially-conscious porn. teach the people about disease and tolerance without sacrificing any fetishism or gleeful objectification.
      suggested titles:
      heather has two milfs.
      sam(antha) i am – the clap edition
      big tits scurvy asses 3

  7. Looks watchable.

  8. I doubt I’ll watch this on purpose, but I do love that Fruitbats song. Seems overdue for use in a romantic comedy trailer, no?

    • Seriously I didn’t think anyone else knew about the fruitbats, yay! Such a good band and good song. As well as the Coconut Records one – swoon Jason Schwartzman! I think the movie looks cute actually. A generic depiction of aspergers is actually quite a specific one as most people show the same signs and behaviors (knowing someone with it myself and a bit about the condition). Also Dancy is a dandy so I’ll probably watch it ;)

  9. I wish Adam was played by Jim Parsons.

  10. I kind of really want to see this. Is that going to be a problem?

  11. Hugh Dancy. His name alone could have been the entire text of this post and I would have been sold.

    SWOON!

  12. Romantic Comedies make me want to punch walls.

  13. Commissioner Burrell!!!

  14. omg what is this movie about? i don’t even know, too busy sighing lightly over hugh dancy playing a socially awkward (yet omg so attractive) scientist.

  15. When is going to come a movie about dating a furry or a femskin?

  16. nice try adam, but you’re not the way-paver that you think you are

    with josh hartnett, no less
I’ve actually seen this one, and grey’s was a step up. So maybe we’re inching slowly?

I was gonna mention this one, too! Aspergers advocates get a lot of mileage from the mention of Mozart, huh?

    DUR DUR DURRRRRRRRRR

  18. I don’t understand how this is any different from all other rom coms, and I just really made myself sick just writing that. Boy who can’t communicate and has learned to live in his own world meets pretty kind/quirky/cute girl and she gives him life even though she didn’t expect this (insert setback here) boy could do that.

Wait. Do all boys have Aspbergers?

    OHHHHHH!!!!

  19. Also when does the lunchtime friend go “SHEEEEEEEEEEEEIIIIIIIIIT.”

    ?

I read the words you wrote in the title, but my brain told me it was a Zom Com about Stockholm Syndrome. Imagine my disappointment.
