Damon Weaver, the elementary school journalist who rose to fame during the election, has already been offered a free ride to Albany State University in Georgia:
The school will officially present Weaver with the scholarship at a June alumni convention in Miami. The fifth-grader said he plans on accepting the school’s offer.
In a press release, Weaver called the full ride a “big relief to my mother and my family.”
This is hopefully the first of many successes for Damon. For those who’ve been following his story (including last week’s disturbing 20/20 report on guns, which revealed that Damon and the other kids in his school live in a really dangerous neighborhood, to put it mildly and over-simply), this news is a relief, but not surprising given the news coverage. Obviously, this is good news, and Videogum isn’t really the serious-enough place to be all like “Now let’s give the same opportunities to all the other kids who weren’t on TV,” but, like, now let’s give the same opportunities to all the other kids who weren’t on TV. (Yay Damon!) (Thanks to Chuck for the tip!)

Win.
Now the name of the game is survival. And the prize is university.
Here’s hoping Journalism College only solidifies Damon’s already perfect interviewing stylings.
“… it’s a very important election, and we get to cover it. Me and you.”
“Hehe. That’s funny.”
Yay! Feelgoodnewsgum!
Thats it, I’m dropping out now. Damons on patrol, and he’s gonna cover the news better than I ever could. Good try everyone, now back to mini donuts and reruns of growing pains!
This is Awesome! I want to be just like him when I grow up!
You do know that your blog (in part) got an underprivileged kid in college, right? Cool!
Ohhh, okay. For a second I TOTALLY thought he was gonna pull a Doogie Howser and go to college like next year. My bad. It wouldn’t be cute that he doesn’t know how to write an essay yet, do algebra or college-level math, and he has an emo roommate. Congrats to him!
