One of my friends is always talking about Norm MacDonald’s speech at the 1998 ESPY Awards, and yesterday Deadspin happened across it and put it up. I’d never seen it, but it’s really funny — MacDonald turned the entire set into a roast, and probably pissed a lot of these sports figures off (you don’t have to know who any of them are to get it!):
Just another entry in the “Norm MacDonald is the most underrated comedian of all time” canon. (Not that he’s not rated, he’s just underrated.) (Thanks for the tip, Andrew!)

What the hell was John Malkovich doing at the ESPYs?
I went back just to make sure that was him. I know it looks just like him, but I find it easier to believe that it’s some sort of dated sports personality that looks very similar to him. Otherwise, it makes no sense. I mean, was he invited because ESPN loved his work in Con Air?
Also, is it just me or did Ken Griffey Jr. look REALLY pissed at all of Norm’s jokes?

i was hoping when he made fun of the winter olympics they would have flashed to an irate oksana baiul clenching her teeth and making fists.
Funny as always, but this just made me feel old. Boomer Esiason, guys. Peyton Manning looks like a giant baby. Well… some things don’t change.
You know, I couldn’t understand Norm’s humor 10+ years ago when he was doing Weekend Update and I was pre-teen/teen. But I’ve never laughed harder than watching him on Conan, etc., now.

i think you DO have to know who those people are to get it. the only thing i saw during that video was tumbleweeds because i am not into sports. i love norm macdonald but this set is dated. except the OJ joke. OJ jokes are never out of date.
I remember when Chandler hosted The ESPY’s and ran around in his boxers.
I really wanted him to follow up with this classic Norm joke: You know what’s a great movie about kickboxing? Kickboxer!
