Yesterday, some first reactions to footage from Sacha Baron Cohen’s new movie Bruno circulated on-line after it was shown at South by Southwest. The general consensus seems to be that if you liked Borat, you will continue to find awkward situational humor based on confronting people with their own flaws hilarious. Sure. That sounds about right.

Now another story finds its way into the news about a soon-to-be-classic Bruno prank. From the AP:

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The actor best known as “Borat” tricked the Alabama National Guard into allowing him onto a post, giving him a military uniform and briefly letting him train _ all, supposedly, for a German TV documentary.

The ruse, which included comedian Sacha Baron Cohen exposing his thong underwear while changing clothes, was going well until a young cadet recognized Cohen and notified older officers who weren’t familiar with the actor.

“It’s an embarrassment to the Alabama National Guard,” Staff Sgt. Katrina Timmons said Monday. “Since then we have put in protocols to make sure this doesn’t happen again.”

They should change the name of the Alabama National Guard to “Narc School, School Full of Narcs.” They should also save everyone some time with these articles. Instead of saying all of that (and that’s just an excerpt! The article goes on and on like it’s a Pulitzer Prize winner), the writer could have just said “Sacha Baron Cohen did some Sacha Baron Cohen-y stuff, of course, classic, and then one guy is like ‘Hey, that’s Sacha Baron Cohen.’” You know, journalism.

  1. I think that SBC is going to go down in history a la Christopher Guest for inventing and owning this genre. Not that punking/pranking/cranking/whatever hasn’t been done before, but it’s almost like performance art with him.

    love him

  3. indifferent to him + slightly annoyed by his obsessive fans

  4. Cohen came to the Ft. Smith and Texarkana, Ark., area last year and played a prank in which a crowd of rednecks were invited to what turned out to be a gay cage fighting match, so I’m looking forward to that in the film.

  5. i’m trying to imagine what kind of protocols one might put into place to avoid this in the future.

also trying to imagine why they would think something like this might happen again.
