In September, CBS will premiere its modern adaptation of Sherlock Holmes, Elementary. (You may remember.) This is, of course, despite the fact that everybody is already in love with a modern adaptation of Sherlock Holmes called Sherlock and it’s on the BBC and stars Benedict Cumberbatch, who is basically Ryan Gosling at this point, and though it is unclear how many modern adaptations of Sherlock Holmes the television viewing public needs at one time, it is pretty clear that this one in particular seems somewhat unnecessary. BUT — WHAT DOES BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH THINK? From Shortlist.com:
“I got hold of the pilot script just to check it out. I don’t know, we’ll see,” Cumberbatch says in the interview. “I think there’s room for us both to coexist. I don’t feel threatened by it and I wish him the best, which is as diplomatic as I can be.”
He continues: “It’s very odd. I did say [to Miller], ‘Well, I’d prefer you didn’t do it but you’ve got a kid to feed, a nice house in LA and a wife to keep in good clothes.’ I think Jonny was like, ‘Mate, I’ve got the f—king mountain to climb here, you’ve got nothing to fear.’ I wish him the best of luck, but I’m a bit cynical about why they’ve chosen to do it and why they cast him.”
“I do understand that you have to put food on your family.” – Benedabe Cumberhaye. I don’t know, it seems like he is not excited about it? You do have to read through the lines a little bit here, but I feel like between Elementary and the second season of Downton Abbey, Benedict Cumberbatch is, like, one cloying scene away from throwing ALL the TVs out of a window. I’m so sorry, Benny! That’s just life! One modern adaptation of Sherlock Holmes piled on top of the last one over and over until we’re all buried beneath them. I had to do a quick spot of googling to find out which Miller is going to be in this one, and I found this amazing, amazing photo that I think pretty well sums up both actors’ feelings about this project. Benny: mute rage and indignation. Miller: “I have no idea why they asked me to come in today and I’m a little uncomfortable and kind of embarrassed to be honest.”
Maybe they should have cast him as a Watson rather than a Holmes, the more I look at this. Holmes is a delightful genius sociopath and Johnny Lee Miller has such kind eyes. I just hope they don’t try to do a gentle, caring Sherlock Holmes.
It’s on CBS in prime time, so I’m sure it’ll be edgy.
Watson is played by Lucy Lui (a girl!), so it’s pretty edgy.

Little snarky there, Benny. “Fancy house, expensive clothes.” I would watch JLM read the phonebook, so maybe I’m not the most impartial judge, but it seems to me that other than both being modern the shows are completely different. Sherlock is 3 nearly-movie-length episodes every couple years. Hopefully Elementary will be, what, 43-minute episodes every week for a full season (or more)? I think they’re trying to do very different things.
That said, I doubt they would have done Elementary if it weren’t for the success of Sherlock. I just don’t see why we can’t be happy about all the interpretations, especially when we haven’t even seen Elementary yet.

I don’t understand the snarkiness either. It’s not liek ti’s the first time the US has capitalized on the success of British TV, at least here they tried to do another modern take on some old-timey source material instead of buying the rights to some show, stripping out all the Britishness and adding some good old-fashioned American humor.

Who is the gentleman with the unfortunate hair between Cumbersmooch and Mister Darcy? Is it Tom Hardy? Whenever I don’t recognize someone I assume it must be him. I couldn’t pick that man out of a lineup of one. He looks completely different every time I see him, I’m half convinced he has no actual face.
Yep it’s Tom Hardy! He is quite the chameleon sometimes.
I just have an image of Darcy/Heathcliff and Sherlock being proud disagreeable gents in their Brooding Castle – complaining about Mr. Knightley coat-tailing their lifestyle. But luckily the day dream ends with a wet-muslin shirt duel, so it’s really a win-win for us all.

I’m confused too!
For every story about him being perfectly wonderful to ordinary schmoes on the street, there are two stories about him wishing failure on other shows and actors. Is he the rogue we just can’t quit, a truth teller without a filter, or a sociopath we can’t stop watching (think, Robert Downy Jr in the mid-’90s when everyone assumed he was going to downward spiral all the way)?
I don’t particularly like Benedict Cumberbatch (come ON, that is NOT A REAL PERSON’S NAME) or Ryan Gosling, so I’m extra confused every time we get a post about either of them. I just do not get the attraction on either of them.
Wait, I thought Benebert Cumberdinck was totally fine with “Elementary” so all the tumblr fangirls ripping it apart had to change their tune and pretend they are very excited about it. Do they have to go back to being haughty and dismissive now? It’s hard to keep up!!
Does Elementary’s exist impact the Johnlock? No? It’s okay then.
One will be 13 or more one-hour episodes on network TV and the other is 3 two-hour movies every year or so, airing in America on public television.
He will have a right to be genuinely annoyed in three years, when CBS will add Sherlock: New York and Sherlock: Miami to the lineup.
Honestly, I think he’s just sick of answering questions about the friggin’ show. I’m sure he wants his friend to be successful, but Benny Boo Boo has bigger fish to fry. Like Brad Pitt and Michael Fassbender when they film “12 Years a Slave”. *drooooool*
