The Rock is not a terrible comic actor, but SNL seems to think that the funniest thing about The Rock is dressing The Rock up in girly clothes and making him sing and dance. You know, because he’s a big scary guy, so the cognitive dissonance is automatically funny to some people. So while Saturday’s episode probably appealed to the middle-school slumber party demographic (an important one), it did nothing for me. Literally nothing. Like one tiny chuckle and maybe three “ehs,” not to build it up too much. The five funniest or most notable sketches, after the jump.
5. Jessica Biel was there, appearing as Jessica Rabbit stealing Cathy from the Cathy cartoons away from Irving, played by Justin Timberlake. Wooo, surprise famous people!:
4. The Activia commercial where everyone pooped in their pants had some funny lines, but it’s mostly notable for the appearance of dreamy comedian and SNL writer John Mulaney as the crew member:
3. The sports show with the alien. I imagine teenage boys consider this a comedy masterpiece:
2. The Rock Obama: not as funny as the hype (The Rock is graded on a curve) but his impression is surprisingly good:
1. And just so there’s something actually FUNNY here today, this was the funniest SNL sketch aired on NBC this weekend, from their Sunday night commercial special, the classic, “Oops, I Crapped My Pants”:
Next week: Tracy Morgan hosts. Tracy Morgan just standing there ad libbing for an hour and a half would probably be funny, so hopes are high!

totally agree- Andy has too much of a smirk and a “I get the joke” demeanor to his acting, but America needs that… they need the goofy kid to show that this TV is safe and that this show isn’t smarter than them… like when we were 13 and Adam Sandler was funny on SNL– he really wasn’t, he was safe.
“Game Time with Dave and Greg” was hilarious. I am a teenage boy IRL.
thought the last sketch, the lighthouse, was pretty funny.
Even though it was post-Pepsuber, I thought the MacGrubers w/ MacGyver were quite funny for a change.
its pretty inexcusable not to have Jon Bovi on here, easily one of the bigger chances took on SNL in awhile and totally paid off… anytime Forte sings really is amazing.
Though I thought a lot of the sketches were funny ideas, it seemed like a lot of them went on for way too long (i.e. all the Weekend Update bits). Maybe they just didn’t have many ideas this week and decided to extend some of them.
Ray LaMontagne was good, at least.
The steps towards losing the awesomeness that is Ray Lamontagne:
1. Song on Grey’s Anatomy (check)
2. Show attended by John Mayer and Jennifer Aniston as romantic date (check)
3. SNL fans seeing him and thinking, “hmm, I like this fellow! I hope they start playing him on my favorite Top 40 and Easy Listening stations!” [don't worry Mark, I'm not talking about you] (check)

you need to re-name this segnemt “SNL: Just the Watchable Parts” and then you click the jump and it is blank. Get it? The show is unwatchable.

I thought Dave and Greg was a good concept but then they SNL’d it up. And was I the only one who thought The Dwayne was in a strangely low amount of Sketches?
Kristen Wiig is the only reason to watch this show.
I thought the monologue was HILARIOUS (I am a middle-school aged girl). Shouldn’t we celebrate Dwayne Johnson’s willingness to look ridiculous. Also, the Hawaii sketch with him and Fred was funny. DJ/FA BFF!
I actually enjoyed this episode a whole lot. Andy Samberg’s Cathy made me laugh wicked hard, especially the part where he called out the strip’s various things, like “Squiggle” or “Confident Point!”
I dunno. I was very entertained, and my dad was too. MacGruber and McGuyver were excellent as well

And about the sunday sketches special, it was kind of sad that the best ones were pretty old! The only good recent one was the annuale… one period a year… so funny.
Game Time with Greg… best sketch of the season… man lindsay is so wrong, almost all of the time.

This was truly disappointing this week. I can’t wait for Tracy Morgan though. Will the gay zookeeper return?
i actually thought this was one of the best episodes of the season. the Hawaiian sketch? no love for that one? the monologue was one of the best we’ve seen in a while. and ray lamontagne was just the cherry on top. he tore up on “trouble”
I came to this post mainly to find some gratifying comments about how horrendously unlistenable this Ray Lamundane fellow was, with his tin-eared Van Morrison impersonation. Nobody else loathed it like I loathed it?
Sure, it wasn’t classic comedic genius, but unlike other shows this year, the sketches weren’t awkwardly unfunny, some of them were even short enough!
I agree with Annie, this was one of the best episodes all year, certainly the best since the election. Why are you rooting for SNL to fail? It’s our elected Saturday Night sketch show!
