As many of you already know, one of my best friends David Rakoff died last week. I won’t bother rambling on about him here because I already did that here. But I just wanted to share with you one of my favorite things we ever did together- a video spoof about the book tour for his second book, Don’t Get Too Comfortable, posted above. And- what the heck- watch our “Stomp” parody below while you’re at it. He was and remains the king. Celebrate him with me.

  1. I always thought David Rakoff could have made a fortune selling his voice to a GPS manufacturer.

  2. Sorry for your loss Dave, I knew him very casually and he was an awesome guy. I cannot tell you how sad I’ve been the past few days. I broke down in tears at the gym yesterday listening to the latest TAL podcast when Ira gave a moment of silence. And then I thought about the Kafka/Dr. Seuss piece from a few weeks ago and had to go give myself a personal moment of silence in the bathroom to compose myself. I always had a huge crush on him and will be crying intermittently for the next few weeks I’m sure…

  3. I’m so sorry. He was great. Totally great.

  4. I’ve been behind on my interneting for the past few days and when I clicked on this link I thought it was just going to be something awesome that David Rakoff did and I didn’t know it was going to be terrible news and now I’m crying at work and just thinking about his incredible, mellifluous voice and his remarkably nimble way with words and that time he said “I would drink Jon Stewart’s bath water” in addition to every wonderful thing he ever did and it’s all making me cry even harder and now I have to go be cheery for campers which sucks because all I want is to be melancholy and go home and read David Rakoff books for the rest of forever.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I know the sadness I’m feeling is minute compared to that of those who actually knew him. Thanks for posting these videos, they’re fantastic. And now, at least, I can picture David and Gore Vidal as ghosts, hanging out and trading dick-sucking tips and laughing wryly at the rest of us for all eternity.

  5. I just listened this weekend to the TAL episode with his letters from Gregor Samsa to Dr. Suess. He was a real talent. Very sad when I heard the news.

  6. I’m so sorry for your loss. What an amazing, talented, brilliant, and hilarious human being.

  7. Oh gosh– the book tour video? So much recognition… not about a book tour, but about that type of person. I know that person, and he/she can be so weirdly magnetic! It’s messed up! Then the disbelief mixed with the accommodating impulse. Thank you for capturing that so well.

    Anyway, I really liked it.
