Hey! This week is Comic-Con! Remember Comic-Con? Don’t remind me! What a nightmare. Is anyone there? I mean, I know people are there. Too many people are there, as far as I am concerned. But from US, is anyone there? How is it? WHO ARE YOU WEARING? You love it? You better love it. If you don’t love it, RUUUUUUUUUUNNNNNNNN. Anyway, we are not at Comic-Con this year because we will never be at Comic-Con ever again, but it started yesterday in San Diego and runs through the weekend. Some stuff is happening, I guess? Like, there was a panel for Sam Raimi’s Wizard of Oz movie, and they showed a trailer for Homeland season 2 but didn’t put it on-line. OK. Same with the new season (7!!?!!!) of Dexter except they did put it up on-line and you can watch the first two minutes if you want. Uh, what else? There was a 50 Shades of Gray book signing and a preview of Gore Verbinski’s The Lone Ranger “wowed” crowds according to the Hollywood Reporter, which would definitely not throw that word around lightly, I’m sure. Neil Gaiman is going to write some more Sandman stories. Oh, and Kristen Stewart is ready to sign on for a Twilight reboot already, thank God. So, there’s that. BoingBoing has an even more thorough general round-up of Comic Book Convention 2012 snooze. Ain’t no party like a big dork party cuz a big dork party don’t Quisp. (That’s a reference to an “out of print” brand of cereal that is often available for sale in comic book stores and other curio shoppes. The nerds get it. The nerds pretty much always get it. That’s why they’re nerds.) WELL? COMIC-CON OR WHAT?

  1. So, maybe this is a stupid question, but what do half of these shows and movies have to do with comics? Hearing all of the stuff that’s having panels there, it seems like it should just be called EntertainmentCon. Is this something the nerds are mad about? If I was a nerd (ok, if I was a bigger nerd) I would be mad about these non-nerds invading my turf.

    • Its really just that the entire entertainment community realized that nerds will pour boatloads of money into almost anything if you pander to them even slightly.

On the other hand I think Kate Beaton is going to be there, and she is the best.

    • AS A NERD, I believe Gabe concluded when he attended that Comic Con is a lot more for the entertainment industry than it is for fans at this point and I think that myself. I think you can get away with anything scif-fi/fantasy related being there, but when you start to get shit like Dexter or Bones, it’s just stupid and it makes it clear this event is for the TV and movie industry folks to promote and not for fans of typical “nerd” material.

    • there is a faction of nerds who are pissed about how it’s “gone hollywood” and if i were an early comicon nerd, i’d be pissed toOH MY GOD WAS THAT JAMES FRANCO?!?!

    • It’s the MTV effect. It started out as one niche, got so much traction that now it’s all-encompassing but they keep the name for brand recognition.

  2. I really think we’ve lost sight of the whole concept of a “reboot.” Has the last Twilight movie even come out yet? I do not know, but if it did, it was less than a year ago and it made 3.2 bajillion dollars. Does that really need a reboot?

  3. Re: New Sandman.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If I had access to blingee I would blingee the crap out of my avatar to show how excited I am by this prospect because AAAAAAAAHHHHHH and also 12 year old me literally died in the past from excitement. Don’t ask how. It’ll cause a time paradox.

  4. I’m here! I bought a Kate Beaton calendar. Also it’s really crowded. Also body odor.

  5. The traffic around the convention center is crazy and a twilight fan got ran over the other day. I’ve only been once with my nephew and it is totally just tv show and movie panels (which is cool i guess, hell i got to meet the cast of “Always sunny..”) and the main floor has comic books to purchase and what not. But i really don’t see what all the fuss is about? although yesterday i was told there was a panel on what the legal ramifications would be if zombies, vampires and werewolves did exist and could they do an insanity plea in court, which kind of caught my interest.

  6. I live in downtown San Diego so like every year I get excited for Comic Con….then I come home from work and get stuck in traffic and can’t find parking and then I hate Comic Con. Not to mention, the whole burrito situation. Took me about 45 min to get my carne asada burrito last night.

    • but you have to admit the parties they have in town totally rock, only time i can walk into a bar dressed brightly colored spandex… well comic-con week and pride week are the only times i’ll allow myself to walk around in brightly colore spandex.

  7. Team Cross Walk!

  8. following Fantagraphics on twitter totally reminded me that actual comic book stuff happens there, and not just agoraphobia, pencil stabbings, and Twilight panels.

  9. The only thing that makes me sad I’m not at Comic Con is the Doctor Who panel with Matt/Karen/Arthur. Ugh, that just sounds amazing.

    • I was thinking about that earlier today. Then I remembered the amount of line standing involved and the stink and the insane crowding and … I can handle not going.

I wonder if they’ll use the trip to film more scenes to last season’s opener/ending. Or not, I don’t wonder about stuff like that AT ALL.

  10. Went to the walking dead obstacle course, lots of fun. realized the hubby is totally not ready for the zombie apocalypse as he got tagged by the zombies.

  11. who are you wearing is my fav comicon joke.
