You would think, what with the Comic Book Convention of 2012 and everything, that there would be more HIGH PROFILE movie trailers this week, but the only real big one is The Wizard Of Oz Franco. But so we have that! And also a couple pretty decent light-hearted independent comedies about life and jumping into life. And they’re all right here, right now, after this jump (incredible!):
Oz the Great and Powerful
I like Sam Raimi’s movies, and I’m always happy to support your boyfriend, James Franco, out of my love for you, but obviously we do not need a new Wizard of Oz movie. But as they say: Gotham gets the Wizard of Oz movie it whatevers not the one it whatevers. We’ll see it, it’s not like any of us is confused and thinks we won’t all see it.
Sleepwalk With Me
This movie stars Mike Birbiglia and Lauren Ambrose, featuring Marc Maron, Hannibal Buress, and Wyatt Cenac.
Hello I Must Be Going
This looks good! If you guys didn’t know, Oscilloscope Films is the independent film distribution company founded by MCA (may he rest in peace) and they pretty much distribute all the best new independent movies! So I am always curious about their new titles. Including this one.
Goats
Sure! David Duchovny! And the funniest cast member of Modern Family no offense to the other cast members of Modern Family! Although I don’t really believe that a teenager would just punch an adult in the face like that. I call shenanigans on that. But otherwise: light-hearted, “smart” person gentle comedies about people finding themselves in boarding school are weirdly almost always appealing to me. Probably because it is very different from my own experience. You WASPS are fascinating creatures!
William Shatner’s Get a Life
As someone who was never really into Star Trek, the only thing I’m less interested in is movies about the fetishization of Star Trek, of which it seems like there are a bunch. I’d be cool with, like, 12 minutes worth of footage and conversations about what it means to love Star Trek so much and after that I want to watch something else, or read a book, or take a nap, or yogurt.
Comes a Bright Day
Poor England. I’m starting to get the sense that that place is just WALL 2 WALL HEISTS.

I was kinda into the Oz trailer until the end. Sorry. Can’t do flying monkeys. Too many terrifying flashbacks to childhood.
I was terrified of the wizard of oz but for some reason I was the wicked witch of the west for halloween when I was like 5? I think my mom was just playing a cruel joke on me. I really don’t like monkeys and I blame that movie.
The CGI and Disney touchTM on Oz made me not excited at all. Plus Johnny Gradschool’s acting was even more flat than usual. Maybe he should try to get 7 master’s degrees in acting. Also, are the Oz stories public domain already? The Mouse does not waste time. Yikes.
Those stories have been in the public domain since the 1950s. Go get a coffee, you.
Right, but now Disney and Time Warner have been getting into it because the public domain books are one thing but the 1939 movie adaptation is something else. Originally produced by MGM, Warner bought the film rights, so now if your Wizard of Oz adaptation is too close to the 1939 movie instead of the books by Baum and Denslow (using ruby slippers from the film instead of silver slippers from the books, for instance), Warner will come after you.
It’s the same deal as the Grimm fairy tales. You can adapt Snow White as much as you want, but don’t you dare give the dwarves their Disney names.
I like the cut of your jib, friend. Thank you. That was what I thought of, but wasn’t sure.
Also Grimm (to which I gave my shout out earlier) is based on the actual Grimm Tales and sometimes the more gruesome folk tales (though the show expands to not just European folk tales) that were around before the pre-Grimm (very Christian, very nationalistic) adaptations.
As someone who studied how folklore has been passed down to teach lessons to kids (main lesson: stay the hell out of the woods) and then witnessed just how quickly studios jumped on public domain tales, rebranded it and sued the crap out of everyone who stepped on their toes in the post-public-domain-works — which ironically became more iconic and memorable than the actual works they were based upon… plus everything else… this is great to know. (And I will look into this further when I get time.)
Kitten high five.
I was meh on the Oz thing until this trailer. But that trailer just really worked for me. Franco? Raimi? Rachel Weisz? I am so psyched right now that I am angry I can’t see the movie tonight.
(Which means by the time I can see it, I will resent it, and it will disappoint me. So I better enjoy Oz while I can.)
Just watch Rachel Weisz in the Mummy and The Mummy Returns. All the CGI, all the Weisz, plus the added bonus of Brendan Fraiser and THE ROCK.
The Mummy is a modern dumb classic. You can get some popcorn and watch the hell out of that movie.
I can’t wait to see “Get a Life”. I’ll be the one wearing a TNG uniform. Officer, of course.
We talking first two seasons striped shoulders, no collar, one-piece jumpsuit or the later season revision? BE SPECIFIC, KATE!
If you wear the early seasons one, you just end up looking like an extra in the background that nobody liked enough to give a new uniform.
Later season two piece tug at the top one. I’ve been a captain for a while. I think it’s time for a promotion to admiral.
And I’ll be the one sporting John Cho’s mustache, because sadly I, too, can only grow that much facial hair.
I’m stoked for this, but even more for the big-screen showing of three episodes of TNG on the 23rd to celebrate the blu-ray release of the entire series OMG I’m going to dress up like an alieeennnnnn!!!
hello i must be going does look great. melany lynskey is great…and hooray for todd louiso! [who should act more!]
Her performance in Heavenly Creatures is one of the best ever. I’ve always thought it was kind of a gyp that Kate Winslet was the one who became a big star.
i don’t mean this in a dick-ish way at all, and more as a matter of sad fact, but….well, just look at them.
i don’t know what roles she could’ve gotten had she gotten more attention, but i just absolutely love her in almost everything she’s done and she just feels so perfect for every role. she has more of a “character actor” quality to her and that has suited her very well. she already has been tagged as “underrated” by more and more people every year, so hopefully the recognition will follow.
she’s the female John Hawkes
Her performance in Away We Go is why I don’t hate that movie. And why I eventually liked it. I might hate it again, but not her performance.
Also I get the feeling that the Gyllenhaal girl wasn’t totally acting in that movie.
That movie was a great disappointment, but, you’re right, Melanie Lynskey does save it. Actually, I was trying to think of an actress whose career I would have rather she had, and Maggie Gyllenhaal might be it. Not that Melanie Lynskey should have had all the roles that Maggie Gyllenhaal had, but, you know, more interesting stuff and less Charlie Sheen sitcom.
Yeah, I know. She certainly doesn’t have blockbuster movie-star looks. And, she’s gotten plenty of work. My actor friends would kill to have her career. She’s so talented, it just gets me a little sad when I see her in something like that Rose Red Stephen King miniseries, or Two And a Half Men. I know the paychecks are nice, though.
She was in a couple episodes of The Shield that I really enjoyed, and as a whole I really enjoy seeing her whenever she turns up in something I’m watching. I can’t remember what podcast I first heard her on and then googled her and was like “Oh, that’s her! I recognize her!” (I think it was an early episode of Totally Laime), but I was totally taken thrown after hearing this great New Zealand accent and then seeing who it belonged to. I had no idea she was from New Zealand until I heard her in an interview.
*I was totally TAKEN ABACK or I was totally THROWN. Just pick whichever one you want. I think I meant THROWN, because TAKEN ABACK sounds negative, and my response wasn’t negative.
Upvoting for mentioning the The Shield.
Do we really need a movie about the Wizard? Dude spent 95% of the original hiding behind a curtain. Sounds exciting! I can’t wait to see the climactic scene where he peeks out to see if anybody’s come looking for him yet.
There were a handful more Oz books that got into him and the land and whatever that I read as a kid. Other than the books existing, I could not tell you more as I haven’t read them in almost 30 years. Fuck, I’m old. And read at a much higher level than most children in my grade.
I REALLY HOPE OZ 3D HAS ALL SORTS OF HATS AND BATS AND SHIT FLYING AT YOU IN 3D.
I hope Franco can sing well, because Dorothy set that bar pretty fuckin high.
“Imogen Poots… I bet she does” – 7 year old me
Kind Of an unfortunate name. But she is pretty so I am sure she has gotten over it.
The second I read saw her name, I forgot everything else in that trailer.
Yeah isn’t there some rule about changing your real, awful name when you become famous?
Was anyone else hoping that sleepwalk with me was a new Twin Peaks movie? … One can dream
A-HA! I was trying to figure out why the title sounded so familiar!
I am oooooohhhhhh sooooooo excited for Sleepwalk With Me.
You’d think it’d get old hearing Birbig’s story about sleep-jumping out of a second story hotel window, but it really doesn’t!
Why Lauren Ambrose isn’t a bigger star continues to baffle me.
I thought that was Jessica Chastain through the whole trailer
Why don’t we need another Oz film? There’s like 50 books in the canon. That being said, it looks revolting similar to the Alice in Wonderland remake, which, thank the lord because I had to sit through it in theaters, was comically bad.
