Tomorrow, the day we normally watch animal videos together, is Independence Day. Rather than skip a week and miss out on everyone’s favorite thing in the whole world, this weekly list of animal videos, I thought it would be fun to find a bunch of America-themed animal videos and get them together for a special Fourth of July edition of The Petting Zoo. It was such a smart idea that I’m not sure how I even thought of it. Then I began looking for America-themed animal videos and, I’m not really sure what I had in mind to begin with, MY GOODNESS! There aren’t any good ones! Like, clearly that has not stopped me from getting a few together, because there are some VERY FUNNY ones, and also I already had this idea so it’s not like I’m not going to do it, but there is a gap in animal videos on the Internet and I have discovered it today. So, please, if you have any secret hidden wonderful videos of otters with Uncle Sam outfits on or whatever, do share them with the rest of us. Until then, please enjoy these five very perfect Independence Day animal videos that I did manage to find. As a spoiler, they are mostly just animals doing normal things with American flags in the background. HAPPY THIRD OF JULY! THIS IS WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT!
5. Cats Eating With A Flag On The Table
4. A Dog In The Foreground, Fireworks In The Background
3. Bald Eagle Taking A Bath
2. Perfect Video Of A Cat With A Patriotic Hat On
1. Dog Says “America,” Almost Kind Of
God bless America. With more America-themed animal videos.

If only you had done this for the Nora Ephron No-More-Tweeting-Eulogies post.
I was disappointed that the eagle was not glittery with one tear, but otherwise good videos all. U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!
There we go! As god intended.
I will #neverforget this eagle. Thank you.

Is this a good place to talk about HOW SCARY FIREWORKS ARE TO DOGS??? I spent most of last night attending to a frightened little yellow dog. Actually, since about 6 p.m. or so, which is especially fun since I have to work and that becomes rather difficult when a small yellow dog is standing on your lap, giving me paw print shaped bruises.
He’s really scared, you guys. And he’s in a Thundershirt and he’s been taking dog Valium and nothing is helping. I was going to leave town tonight, but I heard the beach and the Gorge are actually worse. What’s my point? Fireworks are so scary to my kid. Also, he woke up yesterday clutching his teddy bear, which was really cute.
The first year we were in our current neighborhood we didn’t realize that the people around us go crazy with fireworks. We left our dachshund at home in her crate while we went somewhere else to watch fireworks. We came back to a freaked out dog with blood on her. She actually lost a tooth trying to chew her way out of the crate. I felt horrible!!! She never got in her crate again after that. Since she loves to have her way with the house whenever we leave (and by that I mean peeing and pooping wherever she pleases) she still has to be contained but now she hangs out in our large bathroom which she’s ok with. And we stay home on the 4th. I thought about buying her a thunder shirt but I don’t think it would help.
Poor puppy!!! My guy used to be totally okay with fireworks and thunderstorms and then we lived in California for 7 years. When we moved to Portland, it was like being in the middle of a storm of scary noises (plus my neighborhood also goes insane — a restaurant down the street from me caught fire bc of all the bottle rockets and whatnot last year). June and July are like an endless barrage of nail guns all night. I found him hiding in the basement yesterday. And we haven’t even gotten to the bad nights.
The ThunderShirt is okay for mild noises and general anxiety. But any fireworks make my dude shake like a leaf. He’s very sensitive.
Our dog used to be the same way with fireworks, but about 4 or 5 years ago, he was blessed with deafness. Can’t hear much at all. So it gets better.
I only made it through 47 seconds of number 5 but woof. Is it really just cats eating while flags are on the table and someone does dishes in the back? If that made the Top 5 I can’t imagine the horrible things Kelly has seen.
The last one makes up for the other 4.
Amermermer!!!! Also, the music selections are horrible. Why make an awesome patriotic cat hat and not play some Stars and Stripes or I’m Proud To Be an American!
I was going to say, Tori Amos made some pretty interesting choices in agreeing to compose the music for #2.
Don’t forget this classic:
