Stupid Oscars. GET OUT OF MY WAY. There are real men on TV. (What?) Play time is over.

Last night’s second episode of Eastbound and Down was 30 more minutes of power and greatness. Admittedly, the Will Ferrell stuff was kind of the weakest stuff. Danny McBride seemed to be having trouble keeping it together in those scenes, or at least it sapped some of the energy from his character? I know this might seem like a weird thing to say about an over-the-top redneck comedy, but I was having trouble buying into the emotional reality of those scenes! Real talk.

Nevertheless, where the first episode was all hilarious arrogance and the humor of one character’s blind unwillingness to face facts, the world is starting to shit in Kenny Powers’s face. This show is now threading the line between big laughs and big tears. This is UK The Office level cringe material, which I recognize is not funny to some people, but those people need to grow up. What are you scared of? It’s life, jump into life.

After the jump, three highlights from the show that are each better than all the Oscar highlights combined. Every year, they should preempt regular Sunday night broadcasting for an episode of Eastbound and Down. It will be simulcast all over the world, and Hugh Jackman won’t be allowed within five hundred fucking feet of it.

Fine, Will Ferrell:

Crushing it. I’d like to see those Slumdog street urchins bring tha laffs like this. Did I mention that last night’s episode was directed by David Gordon Green? Very niiiiice. Man, this show. Master and Commander, indeed. GET ON BOARD, TEAM.

  1. Yeah, Will Ferrell was super out of place. He’s too goofy and he’s too clearly playing a character and it throws everything off.

    Show is still great!

Will Ferrell was excellent last night and Danny McBride was superb as well. Last night’s show was flawless just like the first.

  3. I liked when he commented on how ridiculous Will Ferrell’s character looked.

Continued perfection. The high point being the end of the two scenes you posted that didn’t include Will Ferrell (though credit is due for him being awkward despite the fact he can’t dial it down for a bit part).

  5. Rats + Birds = a whole new type of AIDS

  6. The first clip reminded me completely of Step Brothers.

    This is a good thing.

i got a dental damn in the car.

  8. Sooooooooo, how else can I watch this since I don’t have HBO?

  9. I totally love this show, but I was confused about the band teacher. Is he supposed to be mentally disabled? In the first episode, there was no indication of that, but in the second episode he seems like maybe he is. Thoughts?

I agree that Will Ferrell didn’t really add much; I liked the scenes without him better than those with him.

gabe you are dead on with the emotional reality. it feels honest. it’s a step away from irony, which feels like the right step to take right now
