Okay, maybe not “Dark Knight-huge” but certainly “The King Of Kong-huge.” I haven’t seen the movie yet (though it seems like everyone else has, at film festivals), but judging from my reaction to the trailer (laughing AND crying), and glowing reviews from apparently everyone who’s seen it, including both my friend who hates Michael Moore AND Michael Moore, this doc billed as “The real Spinal Tap” is going to be the “have you seen _____ yet” documentary of the spring:
It looks like This Is Spinal Tap meets American Movie meets the Steve Coogan Brit comedy series Saxondale meets Terms Of Endearment (to account for the way it’s gonna make everyone cry.) Anvil: The Story Of Anvil comes out in limited release in April, and is available on Netflix, but with a release date of “unknown.” (They have a well-done site where you can become Facebook friends with them and shit.) I want to see this so bad….it’s like everything I want in a movie.
I’m serious…day it comes out.
I feel bad for the thousands of bands like Anvil all over the world. They work their asses off, tour with popular bands, and only find a small amount of success. It’s gotta hurt to see your friends and collaborators achieve the dream you’ve been working your whole life for. Some people give up to go work at Kinko’s corporate offices or something equally boring and others, like Anvil, don’t stop trying to rock their way to the top.
I don’t know if I can see this & not be sad. I’ll see it of course, but really guys, you gave it a good run, move on.
It really is a great documentary and has a real happy ending in real life because the film has re-launched the band’s careers and given them a taste of the success they’ve always strived for.
Something tells me this wasn’t exactly the taste of success they were striving for.
Well in a way it is because the documentary doesn’t ridicule them (although it’s very funny), the guy who made it is a big fan of their music – he actually was a roadie for them years back. And the likes of Slash, Scott Ian and Ozzy have all gone on stage to play with them – they are finally getting some recognition. When you watch it the film is really about the friendship between these guys and their absolute love of music that has kept them going all these years.
If you say so. I’m sure I’ll like it regardless.

Get ready for the resurrection of PENTAGRAM in 2010, also through a documentary. Get on the wagon early and check them out when the play Webster Hall in March. The performance is being filmed. yay.
