If there’s one thing MTV does really well, it’s pinpointing what a large segment of the TV-viewing population wants but has yet to be provided elsewhere. It’s why they’re the #1 TV network! It’s why Time Warner and Comcast BOTH have a specific numerical option for people calling in to say that they want their MTV. It’s why I Just Want My Pants Back has just been renewed for its 6th season. It’s why Jesse Camp is America’s #1 rock icon and why TJ — Twitter DJ — was just inducted into the Oxford English Dictionary, and then more and more lies in the same vein. Oh and also it’s why they’re making Scream into a TV show in the year 2012. From TVLine:
MTV is developing a weekly series based on the Scream film franchise, sources confirm to TVLine exclusively.
Former MTV execs Tony DiSanto and Liz Gateley, who are shepherding the project under their DiGa production shingle, are on the hunt for a writer to pen the pilot.
It’s unclear what role, if any, Scream auteurs Kevin Williamson and Wes Craven will have in the potential series.
WHOA WHOA WHOA WHOA WHOA. I was definitely on board with this writer-less adaptation of a series of horror films that hasn’t been relevant since Scream 2 came out in 1997 — the parodies of which are even now meta-parodies of their own irrelevance — but now you’re telling me that Kevin Williamson and Wes Craven might not even be involved AT ALL? You’re telling me that just any old JOE SCREAM is going to come in and potentially ruin what has been up until this point a flawless series of Hollywood art? Bologna. Bologna, MTV. Call me when you plan to do it RIGHT.

David Arquette is staring a hole in his phone right now.
Does this mean we should be expecting a Scary Movie TV show announcement soon?
I bet they just wanted to wait until the plot of Scream became public domain.
Still waiting for a Cruel Intentions series.
Would you settle for a prequel?

I know what you mean. Life is drab and meaningless without Chopping Mall: Criminal Intent.
Get this – there was a terrible sequel to Cruel Intentions (Cruel Intentions 2, duh) that was originally supposed to be the pilot for a series based on Cruel Intentions called Manchester Prep. It starred Amy Adams! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cruel_Intentions_2
I have a soft spot in my heart for the “direct-to-video remake masquerading as a sequel” genre. See also: The Sandlot 2, The Butterfly Effect 2, Single White Female 2, Ace Ventura 3, Bachelor Party 2, Road Trip 2, Death Race 2.
Bonus points if it comes out years after the original stops being relevant.
Slap Shot 2 starring Stephen Baldwin
And most of the American Pies.
This should be a Videogum recap series.
Gee, too bad Gabe and Kelly never read the comments, and thus would not see me volunteering to guest-write such a series!
2Cruel 2Intentions! I am going to Netflix that so hard.
Everyone is very excited to pull the Scream killer costumes out of the closet for this and every coming Halloween.
I have used the exact same costume for the last several Halloweens. Any events I’ve been invited to, I tell people that I’ll be there, and to keep an eye out for me, I’ll be dressed up as Godot.
Facetaco, I like the cut of your jib.
All of my Halloween costume ideas are Star Trek-related. My most recent is an older Wesley Crusher, still wearing his sweater, bitter and drunk about his failed career, blaming Picard for failing him as a father figure.
If only Picard had never told him to shut up, things might have been better….
You should go as a younger Wesley Crusher, going on a trip with his friends to see a dead body in the woods.
I’m thinkin’ next Halloween maybe I’ll be Data. After the sex change.
You’re getting a sex change?!
Wow. Gotta watch the grammer.
Grammar. Gotta watch the spelling.
Gotta watch ‘em both.

My idea last year was to go as Riker as Little John and when people said things like, “Oh, are you Robin Hood [because I am not big enough to be mistaken for Little John]” I would hint them towards Little John, and eventually get pissed off and shout “No! I’m Commander Riker AS Little John.” One of my friends was going to be Data as Sherlock Holmes.
oh, the irony in how the franchise has essentially turned into Stab
SCREAM: The Series Episode 1 Scene 1
EXT. DAY – WOODSBORO HIGH SCHOOL
A school bell rings. Walking out of the building a young woman pulls her iPhone 5 from her purse. She hits. It is BEEPING. She hits a button and looks at her phone.
hello @SidneyP2013 do you like scary movies?
I’ll watch it if they get that evil genius Ashton Kutcher to run it. He really Prank’d poor Drake last night. He’d be perfect for this.
Excuuuuse me? Ashton Kutcher does NOT prank’d people, thank you very much. He punk’d's them!
“Former MTV execs Tony DiSanto and Liz Gateley, who are shepherding the project under their DiGa production shingle, are on the hunt for a writer to pen the pilot.”
DIGa, please.
(Is that racist?)
no… i’m african american and i found that absolutely hilarious. i can’t speak for all of us but i though it was funny.
“You’re telling me that just any old JOE SCREAM is going to come in and potentially ruin what has been up until this point a flawless series of Hollywood art?”
I’m just hoping Robey will be involved somehow. Ahhh… Robey, icon of my childish fantasies….
why is this a thing? seriously? okay i’ll give MTV one for making teen wolf into a show because all those dudes are shirtless like all the time and that’s just good tv, but how are they going to have a (i’m assuming) multiple season show about a highschool serial killer terrorizing the town of woodsboro?
