I was not looking forward to this episode of Saturday Night Live, I have to say. I don’t like when sports guys host! Not because of any particular feeling against spots and sports guys, both things are totally fine if you’re into those kinds of things, only because athletes are not just not particularly good at being hosts. Weird how being very good at running and throwing and knowing sports rules (or other sports attributes) (pretty sure those are the main three though?) doesn’t prepare you well for hosting a live comedy sketch show, but that’s just the world we’re living in. Here we are, with Eli Manning. He definitely deserves to be commended for really GOING for it, and for how he made so many funny faces the whole time, but uhhhhhhh, well, he isn’t an actor. Is he even a human? Did anyone check beforehand whether or not Eli Manning was a human/had ever heard how humans talk? He did a very bad job at reading his lines and then saying them in a way that wasn’t like he was just reading them in a 4th grade school play that his mom forced him to be in. And also most of the sketches weren’t great. And also The Dictator? Listen, they can’t all be winners. If there’s one thing we all have to understand about life it is that they are NEVER going to all be winners. Let’s talk about the things we liked, though.

The “motion capture” sketch is one that showcases Eli Manning’s willingness to go for it and also make funny faces, as I noted earlier. I liked it! The part where he made the sandwich and dropped it on the ground? So good. Also it wasn’t SO LONG, as the next sketch I’ll highlight was.

THE TEXT MESSAGE EVIDENCE? It’s always more disappointing to me when I’m actually into a sketch and then the sketch goes on for too long and makes me OUT of it, than it is when a sketch is just bad. This was one of the too-long scenarios. The idea was good, I thought! And, again, LOTS of funny faces from this guy! But then I don’t know why they didn’t just stop at a reasonable time!

Hahah, well, “Helga Lately” is worth mentioning, I think. It was VERY tiring, but different! And that’s nice to see!

The “Herb Welch” sketch was disappointing for me, as a “Herb Welch” fan. Did everyone else feel that way? Or did you guys like it? Maybe “Herb Welch” will never be funny again? Was it just the fault of Eli Manning? WHAT’S GOING ON?

Oh, and tan mom! Our favorite very sad Internet disaster of the past week. The Dictator also showed up during Weekend Update, but tan mom was more exciting.

And, finally, Rihanna performed. And she missed her dress rehearsal! I’m starting to think she’s not a great role model!

  1. The dictator was just the worst. Good job on the side work, Jay Leno writers.

I think the writing was actually pretty solid this episode, but as Kelly mentioned, little Manning could just not carry the whole episode. He wasn’t awful but the fact that his older brother is so good at it makes you wonder why Eli even did it. Does he need need this? Did he ask Lorne Michaels to do it?

  2. Did anyone else notice Rihanna pounding her pussy on stage?

    • Oh my god. I just realized what she meant by “cake.” I just thought it was an innocent song about birthday desserts!

      • Well, I’m gay. I would have gotten it if the song were titled “Pie”.

      • Sorry Lawblog! I’ve turned into a troll :( I’m not gonna vote again until I practice touchscreen some more.

      • So on that Food Truck episode of Bob’s Burgers, there was that singer with the song called ‘Oil Spill’ in which the oil spill was her vagina, a metaphor which was ‘not subtle,’ as Gene put it… and, well, that was basically that entire Rihanna song as well? Right? (GOOD STORY BRO)

    • My daughter wanted to see Rihanna when I told her she was on “a late night TV show last night”. Forgot to forward pass the PP (P*ssy Pounding) song and go to the second one. Got the remote working shortly after, but the look on her face expressed confusion.

Side note – shouldn’t PP become a new rating, like N or AC or V?

  3. I’m really disappointed that I quick image search of ‘Rihanna SNL’ did not turn up any images of the vag slap she kept doing, otherwise I would post one here.

  4. I too enjoyed Eli Manning’s faces in those two sketches. I really like Rihanna’s music, but when I see her perform, all I can think about is how she took back her abusive ex-boyfriend. I mean, who wouldn’t — he’s got a great* personality, writes good* songs and knows how to dance well* — but what kind of example is she setting for all the young girls out there whose boyfriends punch them in the head and then apologize for it later after trashing a Today Show dressing room?

    *sarcasm

  5. I loved the 50 Shades of Grey commercial and the tanning mom segment of WU. That’s about it. They could have shortened this episode to a 5 minute commercial break.

  6. Now I’m really late to the game, and perhaps this has been discussed before, but does anybody know where one can get the real Fox 5 incident that the Herb Welch character is based on? It used to be on youtube, and it was great.

    (Ooh, found it.

But you guys knew that, right?)

    • I actually saw that live on a trip to NY a while ago. I remember thinking, “man, New York sure is different.” It was a huge shock, specially after watching years of Jillian and Dorothy on Good Day L.A.

  7. I think this episode was about as good as the Tom Brady episode of SNL, until the last two minutes when the Eli Manning episode drove down the comedy field to defeat the Tom Brady episode.

  8. The 50 Shades of Grey ad was fantastic. I also thought, had the male part been in the proper hands, the “What is This/That?” gameshow sketch was good. I’m going to miss Abby Elliott if she leaves. She’s under utilizedand superficially, she’s verry attractive.

  9. I think the problem with the Herb Welch sketch was the groan-worthy concept of him with occupiers. A regular old guy we’ve never met calling occupiers hippies is a middling sketch, but Herb is the best when he’s just interviewing people about a car crash, not getting political. Herb wouldn’t give a shit about those kids because Herb doesn’t give a shit about anything except telling that haircut who’s the business. Or whatever. To have him come out and immediately start hitting the subject with the mic because he’s a protestor felt stupid.

  10. Was anyone else really disappointed there wasn’t a Shy Ronnie sketch?

  11. I really liked the Helga Lately sketch if only because I cannot stand Chelsea Handler and the tired comedy of her show. I think I may now have sat through more Helga Lately than Chelsea Lately.

Also I really liked the Little Brothers commercial. My little brother better not find out about that organization…

  12. There’s always precisely one Weekend Update joke that makes me laugh unexpectedly hard, and this week was definitely the rise in stolen NYC manhole covers and the corresponding rise in missing unicyclists. The rest of the jokes were BLUUUGGGGHHHWWWWWHATEVERRRRR
