This was a weird episode for a few reasons. The first and worst reason right now is that somewhere around a million of the sketches aren’t available online. Four of them, at least. Maybe even FIVE! Can you believe it? That’s almost half! This unfortunately includes the very, very good Game of Thrones sketch, which, as you may be able to tell by clicking on that link, is actually available on Gawker, in case you didn’t see it and want to go there and see it. Some of the others that aren’t available are the “Time of Your Life” cold open, the one at the high school, and the “Empire State of Mind” one. So I’m sorry if you wanted to see any of those again. (You shouldn’t be too sad about it.) (The cold open wasn’t bad, though!) (It featured all of the GOP candidate characters sitting at a bar singing “Good Riddance [Time of Your Life].”) You got to see the Game of Thrones one, though! Against all odds! You can be happy about that! The other weird thing about this episode was how Josh Brolin was basically not even the host at all, playing only very insignificant roles in most of the sketches and not appearing at all in either of the digital shorts. That was fine, though. For us. He wasn’t great when he was in the sketches anyway, and the cast were certainly good without him. That’s why I didn’t use him in the lead image, in case you were wondering. I’m sorry to have kept you in suspense about why Josh Brolin was not used in the lead image, but it was a subtle diss. Dissed ya, Josh Brolin! Dissed ya about not being in your episode that much by not using you in the main image of this blog post! SRY! Anyway, let’s talk about the things that we can. Why not.
I thought “The Californians” was good! It went on too long, no doy, and maybe lost its way a bit at the end when more characters were introduced, but it made me LOL once or twice. I’m not totally sure why Bill Hader kept breaking, ’cause it wasn’t THAT funny, but it was certainly pretty funny and enjoyable and I liked it! The end!
The first Digital Short (Laser Cats), with a very good cameo from Stephen Spielberg, was good too! It’s a little too bad that in order to have the first good Digital Short this season they had to spice up another “Laser Cats,” but whatever, who cares. It was very good when ET said “EAT call house.” Hahaha. All a good one.
And, hey, the second Digital Short was good too! Why didn’t they spread these guys out between two weeks?
I think the majority opinion on “Garth and Kat” is that people do not like “Garth and Kat.” That’s fine. You do not have to like “Garth and Kat.” But I, forever a rebel in which SNL sketches I do and do not like, DO like “Garth and Kat.” BOOM! They’re great, and they aren’t really used enough that I ever really feel tired of their shtick. It’s a good shtick! Keep on keeping on with it, sometimes but not often!
Aaaaaaaaand, that’s it for what’s available? The only other sketches are the prom sketch, which was not too great, and the Piers Morgan sketch, which was also not great. Actually, the Piers Morgan sketch was fine. Here is that one:
Taran Killam is very good at everything he does, and the Law and Order idea was funny. So that’s that!
Gotye was the musical guest and even though I love the song “Somebody That I Used to Know,” apparently most other of you guys and friends of mine REALLY do not like it. Like, specifically dislike it very much. What’s the deal with that? Are we hearing different songs? Do you guys not like Phil Collins all of a sudden for some reason? What’s your deal?! Also, what’s the deal with the boxes on the ends of their microphones?
Huh? Can someone explain BOTH of those things?

I didn’t see this because I was watching Cabin in the Woods which I really liked! So, if anyone was wondering “Gee, I wonder if lilbobbytables is watching SNL this week, and also what she thinks about Cabin in the Woods”, well, I guess you have answers to your strangely specific queries.
Nothing to add but me also! Quality film, more quality than Josh Brolin I guess, based on this. Go us! That was a good movie!

Ooh. I saw Three Stooges. Who wants to chat about that gem? I laughed several times and there was an adorably phlegmy little girl a few rows behind us that kept saying cute things like “Oh they’re sad now.”
Cabin in the Woods was fantastic! Yes! (Also saw Raid: The Redemption which was also very good.)
I think the reason your friends don’t like that song is that it’s too mainstream now. Which is sad. Get some non-hipster friends, Kelly.
I think a large part backlash against “Somebody That I Used to Know” has more to do with the timing of its mainstream popularity, as the video for that song first started popping up on some music blogs back in July (Making Mirrors came out in August). Even though I feel like it didn’t get widely known until earlier this year, a lot of people were already fatigued with this song by the time it started getting rotation on Top-40 radio, similar to other popular indie songs that achieved grassroots success months (or years) before entering the mainstream consciousness (e.g. M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes”, Foster the People’s “Pumped Up Kicks”, or Mumford & Sons in general).
Another reason might be that the song is bland, boring, and knowingly tasteful. There is even a sauntering-up-to-the-stage break in the middle of the song. And I cannot backlash since I’d never heard of the band before this appearance.
Oh I really like the song. I think it’s got a great twist because for the first two thirds or so you think “oh this poor guy who sounds like Sting, his heart is broken. Frowny face.” but then she comes in, and suddenly it’s: “Oh shit, Sting Jr. is a dick! Amazing. Fuck you Sting Jr. But also great song!”

I don’t really get why Josh Brolin hosted this week, especially since MIB 3 doesn’t come out for another 6 weeks. If they wanted to capitalize on the movie, they go with Will Smith. It was a rather mediocre episode with Laser Cats and the Game of Thrones bit probably the highlights of the show.
I thought this was about average as SNL episodes go. But did anyone else notice that Josh Brolin has an enormous head in relation to his body? His giant melon was the only thing I could think about during the monologue.
I did notice that. It has always been thus. The Goonies happened to be on earlier in the day and I watched it, of course.
There’s something very early 90s Gypsy Kings-ish about the Gotye song that makes me want to stab my eyes out.

Does anyone else get more of a Sting vibe from Gotye? He’s your generation’s Sting.
I’d say he’s more Peter Gabriel, but Making Mirrors has homages to pretty much every popular 80′s singer-songwriter. It even has a song that sounds almost exactly like “Faith” by George Michael.

I like “the Californians”, but as a Southern Californian by birth, I felt that calling it “the Californians” was little unfair to Northern Californians, since it’s really only us Southern Californians that use the definite article when we refer to freeways.
Agreed…us Northern Californians find it as weird/quirky as anybody else not from SoCal.

I also love Garth and Kat and I hate it when people don’t find them as funny as I do. We should start a support group.
The prom sketch was fantastic. I thought Josh Brolin was great. And handsome. But mostly great.
Also, I was sad how they tied up Laser Cats because that means Andy really is leaving and soon I will be sad.
I watched SNL this weekend, but it was far from the highlight, what with playing catch up on this last week’s Daily Shows, Colberts Report, and Up All Night, then batch-watching all available episodes of Happy Endings and Best Friends Forever, then wrapping it up with Mad Men and Game of Thrones, THEN realizing the first two episodes of The Legend of Kora aired on Friday, which were awesome!
So yeah, SNL. Hmm. I liked it when… uh, I liked it when umm, uuuhhhhhhhh Weekend Update?
