There’s not actually a lot to be said about The Raid: Redemption. It was good! If I try to formulate why it was good into actual sentences, I sound like a child writing in crayon. “This movie was good and I enjoyed watching it. It had lots of action in it. My favorite part was when the one sweaty guy was in a headlock from behind and he kicked his legs out and flipped underneath the guy to throw him to the ground, but I also liked the part when the hero double-stabbed a dude and then kneed him through a wall, and then time when he killed him with a doorframe.” See what I mean? Stupid idiot likes it. But it’s fun and exciting. The movie is basically about a SWAT team that tries to take down a crime boss but ends up getting trapped in a scary high rise full of bad guys and methodically executed until the only people left are this one dude who is very very good at fighting, like, so good, a bad guy with a complicated relationship to the hero NO SPOILERS, and a corrupt old man. There’s lots of punching and kicking and stabbing and shooting. I don’t like the stabbing so much because in real life I am for real very scared of knives, and I didn’t like the shooting so much because that’s just violent and loud, but the punching and kicking were A++ and if they were a seller on eBay I would definitely do business with them again. Ultimately, I do think that Tony Jaa is a more exciting fighter to watch in movies, but The Raid: Redemption is good and you should see it if you like that kind of thing. This has been a good movie review.

  1. I ALMOST went to go see this, and then I ALMOST went to go see Dominic Dierkes’ THE ANYTIME SHOW podcast recording (every Saturday at 8pm), but then I didn’t do either because I was doing laundry, like, all of my laundry needed doing, and by the time it was done I was drunk off of four beers for some reason and couldn’t go anywhere.

I watched the trailer tho, and it looks exactly like Gabe described it. I do plan on seeing it in the future, as well as attending a recording of THE ANYTIME SHOW (which I’m not writing in all-caps because I’m emphasizing it’s entertainment value, but rather that’s how it always appears in print [but don't get me wrong, I would capitalize it when I wanted to emphasize its entertainment value, because I find it highly entertaining]).

  2. Methodically punching their way through a building full of bad guys, you say?

  3. There’s not actually a lot to be said about this review. It was good!

  4. Looks like your screengrab there brought a metaphor to a blog fight.

  5. I concur fully. I liked how there was like 2 minutes of setup and then BAM WE’RE IN THE APARTMENT BUILDING. The editing in it was great as well, how they’d cut from team to team right before big shit went down. I liked how whenever someone got stabbed they got stabbed like 6 times instead of just once and keeling over. Lots of cool professional wrestling type shit in there too.

You’re right, it’s hard not to sound like a 6 year old or a juggalo trying to describe it.

    • Speaking as an editor, I have to say that the editing was phenomenal. I remember a time when you just expected an action movie to have good editing. Now it’s kind of a crapshoot. Like, I just got out of Hunger Games, and the entire time I wanted to shout “HOLD ON THAT FUCKING SHOT! NO! NO!!!!! STOP CUTTING!!!!! WHAT WAS THAT?!!!! WHAT WAS I JUST LOOKING AT?!!!!” Very bleh…….

The Raid was the exact opposite. I knew what was happening at all times, I knew where everyone was in relation to eachother, and it was thrilling to watch. I pray that the producers of the new Bourne movie had a chance to watch this before they started principle photography.

  6. actually this movie sounds like it could be kind of rad

    • It’s damn good if you’re just going to see the punching and kicking and shooting and stabbing. Not so much if you’re more interested in the talking and emoting and drama-ing.

  7. just saw it. roomful of dudes clapping and cheering the goriest scenes. ’twas quite the film. directed by a welshman. pretty darn badass…

  8. I think what makes an action movie good these days is if the action can surprise you, which is rare. Oh you have a car chase? Wake me up when it’s over. Oh, you did a fade-away head slam into a broken door frame? I…holy shit!
