It’s almost here! It’s almost here! The 2012 Academy Awards is almost here! WHO ARE YOU WEARING? Between now and Sunday, who are you wearing? Each day a more special outfit until you show up at your friend’s house in five million dollars worth of borrowed diamonds. HOW MAGNIFICENT everyone will exclaim. YOU ARE A VISION! Anyways, right, so, the Oscars are this Sunday. Cool. Very very cool. My prediction is that Adrien Brody surprises everyone and wins a Lifetime Achievement Award for Splice 2. This year, we are reintroducing the Videogum Oscar Pool. You should enter! The winner of the pool will receive a $100 gift card to the movie theater of their choice. Wow! To enter, simply post your Oscar Picks in the comments before the beginning of the Oscar broadcast on Sunday. Whoever has the most correct answers wins. (In the event that more than one person has the most correct answers, a winner will be selected at random.) Good luck!
Now in order to make things REALLY interesting, Kelly and I have both posted our Oscar Picks after the jump, and whoever LOSES our Oscar Pool will have to take one for the team. If Kelly loses, she has to take the New York Movie and TV Sites Tour and write about her experience. If I lose, I have to take the (much worse) TMZ Hollywood Tour and write about the experience. High stakes or THE HIGHEST STAKES?! Two blogs enter, one blog has a miserable afternoon on a bus with fools. Good luck to both of us, but more luck to me.
And, as always, please join us here on Sunday night where we will watch this most glorious of events TOGETHER LIKE A FAMILY FOR ONCE.

I have no idea who is going to win, so I’ll just hang out over here in the Oscar hot tub.
Don’t forget to wear flip flops. You don’t want to get Oscar warts.
In a twist Gabe could not foresee, a write-in campaign for “Take Shelter” will result in it winning all of the Oscars. ALL OF THEM.
A NEW ‘TAKING ONE FOR THE TEAM’?!?!?!

YESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!

Also, this is fun, because now I have a reason to watch this crap show!
For Your Consideration:
War Horse is not a real movie.
You are so dead!
I’m just putting it out there… FOR EVERYONE TO CONSIDER.
What are you going to do? Find a horse from a war and ride it over to my house and say, “Look! It’s a horse! From a war! It’s a war horse! Spielberg went into his pocket of magic and decided to look at The Great War (#neverforget — seriously, WWI was awful) through the eyes of a child, but make it about a horse! And this is the horse! And also, here’s a DVD to prove it to you!”
And then we’ll watch the DVD and probably drink wine (because I have manners and will offer you a nicely chilled sav blanc) and then I’ll probably fall asleep and assume that if we did see a movie called War Horse, it was probably a fever dream caused by an alcoholic slumber and actually we saw A Very Long Engagement because I’d much rather watch that instead.
I say thee neigh! Also, I wish I had seen War Horse so I could make one single point about it!
And why didn’t you see it? BECAUSE IT’S NOT A REAL MOVIE.
THAT’S IT! I’m going to recruit Ryan Gosling to pilot a giant steampunk War Horse robot to badideajeans Manor, and his orders will be to trample all flower beds in a 4-block radius!
Not to mention that on his person will be Bates’ PERMANENT walking papers!
That still sounds more plausible than War Horse.
Neither is Albert Nobbs, maybe Glenn Close plays the War Horse
Yeah, that movie looks super fake as well. I don’t get why Hollywood keeps putting out this garbage after we’ve all seen Inception and know EXACTLY what is really going on.
You fool!!! YOU KNOW NOTHING!
INCEPTION is just a clever PLOY by the evil COMPUTER OVERLORDS designed to make us FORGET all we learned from Keanu’s documentaries about the MATRIX.
No real human could be as nice and humble as Matt DAMON. He is clearly an android and is in on the WHOLE PLOT!!!!!
Also, all these bad movies are designed to put you to sleep in the theater. That’s when they try to insert devices into our brains to make us hand over more money for 3D versions of movies we didn’t even like when they were in 2D.
“An extra dimension of crap? Why sure, just take my wallet”.

And now we play… the waiting game.
Ahh, the waiting game sucks. Let’s play Hungry Hungry Hippos!
I find this gif creepy and compelling at the same time.
I think its because he looks like he’s trying to do that “Here is the, church and here is the steeple” thing with his hands.
As a child, I could never look away, even though I knew the “people” would always turn out to be wiggly worms.
The list I made before this post turned out being the exact same as FLW’s, with the exception of sound editing and makeup. LET THE GAMES BEGIN.

No love to Joe Esposito for best original song? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jYcW1nEsGk
You’re the best. I’m not surprised nobody was capable of keeping you down.
My favorite thing about Karate Kid is that it’s called “Best Kid” in Japanese. Like, they didn’t even try to pretend it was karate in that movie. Sorry if I’ve told this story before. #oldman
Well, he was the best kid in the end, so it’s an accurate title. What’s your problem?
I always thought the movie would have been better with Scott Baio in the lead role. Although, given his age they may have needed to call it “Karate Guy” instead.
Anyone who took the time to actually consider the nominations and post a pick list here deserves an upvote, because that takes dedication and boredom and a devil-may-care attitude, and we could all use a little encouragement as we sift through all of pop culture’s garbage for those delicious morsels of sincere entertainment and delight!

“the fantastic flying books of morris lessmore” is pseudo-whimsical, hokey dribble/bullshit that was produced by talentless hacks in one of the most revolting cities in america… just thought you guys should know.
Thanks.
The animation’s not bad to look at, but it’s a poorly done rip off of a Pixar film, without a memorable story, and annoyingly sentimental. No sir, I didn’t like it.
I liked Wild Life the best. That animation style was so pretty, and the story was not really for children.

Will there be a pizza party for this? Asking because I like pizza and also I would like time to prepare my jokes that will all be puns related to the name “Nobbs”.
Because I usually lose my NCAA pool despite my knowledge being tops, I have randomly generated my Oscar picks (which took me a bizarrely long time to do correctly). I’ve got a good feeling about this.

Please god let Bret McKenzie win an Oscar.
I’m worried because I read that Rio is getting a sequel, which, I think, means it did well financially. Plus the whole Sergio Mendes thing – he’s a music legend that people might want to give an award to because he’s old and because Harrison Ford built one of his music studios back in the 70s.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Everything: John Cougar Mellencamp
Best Picture: Hugo (because of Hugh Jackman, who goes in his pants)
Best Actor: Jean Dujardin (aka John of the Garden)
Best Actress: Viola Davis (I like the name Viola)
Best Supporting Actor: Christopher Plummer (actually, he’s an Actor!)
Best Supporting Actress: Berenice Bejo (It’s pronounced “beejew”)
Best Director: Michel Hazanavicius (Scorsese already got his sympathy Oscar.)
Best Original Screenplay: A Seperation (whenever a movie is nominated for writing, but nothing else, it’s because the writing’s good. Another sign that the writing is good is that there are no horses in the main role.)
Best Adapted Screenplay: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (I always want this award to go to someone who took a really, really shitty book and made a mediocre movie out of it. But I don’t read any of these, so I’m betting my ballot on a lot of alliteration.)
Best Foreign Film: Bullhead (Mark Wahlberg’s in the Academy, right? I bet he’d vote for this.)
Best Animated Film: A Cat In Paris (Film people think Paris is awesome! Except Mark Wahlberg, I bet. Word.)
Art Direction: Hugo (Pretty damn arty looking from the trailer. Also, there was a Dove ad prior to the trailer, and that’s good soap.)
Cinematography: The Artist (Guillaume Schiffman) (Black and white = creativity! My first TV was very creative.)
Costume Design: Jane Eyre (Sweeps the redneck block for the win. “Look! Them dresses look just like the ones in the paintin’s!”)
Documentary (Feature): Hell and Back Again (Triumph over tragedy = Oscar gold, man!)
Documentary (Short Subject): The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom (see Tragedy note above, also: Oscar Goldman. “We can rebuild him.” Timely reference!)
Film Editing: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (I saw one of the film reels at the theater and the splicing was exquisite. Surgical, really. Best splice job I’ve ever seen.)
Makeup: The Iron Lady (Effective use of make-up to show the varying facets of Thatcher’s personality. “Less Iron! More Lady!” they shouted in the make-up room a lot, I bet.)
Music (Original Score): The Adventures of Tin Tin (John Williams at his echo-y trumpet-blaring best!)
Music (Original Song): “Man or Muppet” (Vote against the Muppets, and I skip next year’s Oscars. That’s the deal.)
Short Film (Animated): The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore (Long names are easier to vote for. That’s why Al Gore lost Florida.)
Short Film (Live Action): Tuba Atlantic (Many Oscar voters like titles that are hard to say out loud, just to watch the announcers struggle.)
Sound Editing: War Horse (I imagine there’s a lot good neighing going on)
Sound Mixing: Hugo (Too much neighing, now that I think about it.)
Visual Effects: Hugo (Fuck you, Andy Serkis. Love, the Academy.)
