Thinking about starting Ryan Gosling’s workout routine, but I don’t want to get so ripped that my scorpion jacket doesn’t fit anymore. PLZ ADVIZE.
i saw the Bourdain article earlier and it completely solidified what I can’t stand about him. I used to be an avid fan – and still watch the occasional episode depending on what location he’s in, but it has become an exercise in diminishing returns with him and I have almost lost all patience with it.
he calls Midnight in Paris “elitist,” yet spends the rest of the interview talking up how he’s been raised on art films, and bashes the middle-of-the-road, mainstream hits that so many idiots love.
then, after complaining about all of the usual annoyances of going to movie theaters he says that his movie snack of choice is popcorn – but is sure to point out that he likes the shitty, grubby half-stale movie popcorn with chemical butter, as if there were some other kind.
in sum: he celebrates, oozes over, and lauds the high end, yet always reestablishes his low-end cred by saying how much he loves the grubby, pedestrian stuff as well.
he is the investment banker that slums it in dive bars. he is a politician.
How dare that recovering heroin addict line cook with a college degree and educated parents talk about the best and worst of things.
What you’ve described sounds like most of his shows, where he usually dines at some good cheap place, some good middle-of-the-road place, and then a fancy place.
Full disclosure- I’m pretty new to Bourdain’s work, so perhaps you know his tendencies better than me, but what you’re addressing doesn’t sound 100% like that’s what he’s intentionally doing, especially once you look at his background. He’s had all sorts of highs and lows, and I’ve seen him ooze and laud over everything on both ends, as long as he likes it.
i am pretty well versed in his story, read 2 of his books, and watched his shows fairly regularly for years….like i said “avid fan” and it doesn’t seem to be an established formula of his. that seems more to me to be he establishes a viewpoint of “this is the cliche of ______” and showing how true, or most often, how completely false and/or reductive it is.
I will keep an eye out for what you’ve pinpointed though, if I ever catch the show again! I enjoyed the episodes of No Reservations & The Layover that I’ve seen, but I definitely get an abrasive vibe from him, and so far it’s been an entertaining vibe.
I would just like to slowly back away from this topic, as I re-read my previous comment, and I sound way too involved with Bourdain’s show than I actually am. I just listened to his WTF w/ Marc Maron episode. Soooooo… backing away.
Yes!
What I don’t get is why Bourdain says he’s “OK with real linen”????
UGH — Anthony Bourdain is basically just the Fonzie of culinary celebs.
Willow Smith snipped her hair back and forth. *drops mic*
Thanks for the afternoon Lynx!
And I thought I knew Willow Smith…
