Lately — especially in this season — 30 Rock has felt, to me, unusually tired. They’ve been doing the same thing every season of their entire lives, and I don’t mean that in a bad way because what they’re doing is great generally (you’re welcome, Tina Fey) (this is an honor for you), but it makes sense that the formula feels worn. What doesn’t really make sense, I guess, is how it hadn’t really felt that worn (again, to me) UNTIL lately/this season. But whatever, anyway, I’m saying all of these words to get to the point that last night actually kind of felt good again! Right? Like it used to feel, back when we were all freshly in love with 30 Rock. Maybe it was because of Kristen Schaal? Ugh, she is the best. Kristen Schaal 4 on this show 4ever. Or maybe it was because of the Liz and Jack using Jack’s negotiation techniques plot line that was so great. WHO KNOWS? Who knows what makes a TV episode good. Only God. Why even try to figure it out. Speaking of good TV episodes, Parks and Recreation is ALWAYS a good TV episode! It’s difficult to have to talk about that show every week without just saying ILOVEITILOVEITILOVEIT. The one thing that DID upset me was Leslie’s scavenger hunt or whatever for Ben. Only because if anyone ever did that for me I would be so upset and I wouldn’t even try to do it and I would call them and we would break up, FELLAS! Andy was perfect when he broke the glass, obviously. Great episode. The only disappointing part was when it was a Valentines Day episode, meaning I guess we won’t get a new episode next week. BOOOOOO! The Office was fine. I like the idea that Dwight is the father of Angela’s baby! But Jim’s jury duty plot line wasn’t really doing it for me. It seemed like something that would have worked well in one of the earlier seasons, but now that Jim and Pam are married and boring and Michael Scott turned into Andy, it’s kind of harder to remain interested in any of their wacky shenanigans. But maybe you don’t think so! WHAT DO YOU THINK?!

  1. Vampire Diaries was straight up KILLER last night

  2. Ron’s love of scavenger hunts and party down worlds colliding were

  3. I thought it was hilarious when Gabe’s DVR was preventing him from watching Top Chef, but my DVR didn’t record 30 Rock last night, so now I understand that there is a dark side to cable providers.

  4. Harris Wittels Phish joke was the meta best!

      • I really like Up All Night! Very solid. Very funny. And cute. But, can someone explain to me why baby Amy needs to be put in child care if her dad is a stay-at-home dad?

        • She needs to interact with other children or else she’ll be a total weirdo

        • it’s not for child care, it’s for pre-school! they’re entering into that super-competitive world of urban rich parents trying to get their kid into pre-school where you basically have to start before they’re born. there was an episode of party down about that, remember? and also an amy sedaris movie last year that almost nobody saw even though it also had john hodgman in it but was somehow not so great. anyway will arnett even jokes about it, something about how she is ‘like, zero years old’. you’re welcome

          • up all night is tired and cliched, but there’s an amy sedaris/john hodgman movie I haven’t even heard of????? must see now. oh and she was amazing on the good wife last week, using her jerri blank seduction techniques on eli.

  5. You guys, I’m sorry. I didn’t watch Jersey Shore. I know you were all counting on me and I failed!

  6. I loved the 30 Rock negotiation too. Reminded me of Michael Scott negotiating with Darryl. For a while I thought they were too similar, but it went in a completely different direction. So you’re off the hook, shows.

  7. Leslie looked sooooo pretty last night. #girlcrush
And when I saw Martin Starr I got excited about a Freaks and Geeks cameo, not Party Down even though I knew there was going to be a Party Down reference? But he will always be Bill to me!

    • That was my favorite moment. I love the rare acknowledgment that it’s a tv show. Like from season 1, I think, when they had a Verizon ad in the show that winds up with her looking at the camera and asking for her money…

  8. Suze: “How old are you?”
    Kennth: “Don’t worry about it.”

That Kenneth is an ageless hillbilly vampire is perhaps my favourite running joke on 30 Rock. Maybe even my favourite running joke of all time!

What do we think of Ann and Tom potentially dating on Parks and Rec? I knew they weren’t going to go with the Chris/Ann reveal, so I kind of wondered if it wasn’t Tom she was meeting. This show is really good at convincing me that certain relationships will work, even when there’s no logical reason for them to work.

  9. I think so, too. Although I feel like this was really an opportunity for April to *ugh* CARE about people. God. That was my April impression.

But srsly. I like that she seems to be developing and caring in spite of herself. Last week, she was kind to Chris and this week, she’s helping Ann. And these are people she professes to dislike! Which is why I love how Aubrey Plaza is killing it with this grudging acceptance that she cares, but in an eye-rolling, Jesus, would you guys just get with the program because obviously you should give him a chance, Ann, manner.

It’s a rare sitcom that can have characters with multiple layers that don’t seem either overly sentimental or schmaltzy or totally out of character. And almost every character on this sitcom has layers. Except Orin. He’s just creepy.

  10. Oh no! There’s no GIF of my favorite line yet! Please let’s have Tina Fey saying: “You didn’t know emotion could be a weapon? Have you never read the poetry of Jewel?” Because I hahaha’d all over myself.

  11. 30 Rock was great but was missing a little bit of this guy…
