The most anticipated movie trailer since the release of The Dark Knight Rises movie trailer is finally here! (Our one day streak of not having a big movie trailer to talk about is finally broken. Watch it in HD on Apple’s website. It’s just better that way!) It’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey! Gettin’ the ol’ gang back together! Minus Aragorn, of course. (I really hope they don’t do some kind of X-Men: First Class Wolverine-drinking-at-a-bar-in-Cuba style 2 second cameo. Or do I? Perhaps I wish that MOST OF ALL.) But when God closes an Aragorn, he opens a Martin Freeman. We love Martin Freeman! Obviously, I am excited for this movie and will see it and I really liked the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and for the most part I still think Peter Jackson has it in him to make good movies (see also: Heavenly Creatures) although at times he allows his enthusiasm for visual effects to replace human emotion with a two-dimensional brand of melodrama set to an Enya score, but still, I think he’ll make it pretty good. My main concern, though, is just that what we really want is a fourth LOTR movie and the fact of the matter is that The Hobbit just isn’t one. (NO NERDO.) You know what I mean, though? All of the sneaked in references to the old movies in this trailer are cute but they are NOT ENOUGH. And how are you not going to show the dragon? I would rather see the dragon than some old Gollum. If it makes him feel better, you can let Andy Serkis play the dragon, too. Who cares. Anyway, I am excited but also nervous, but also not really, I mean it’s just a movie trailer and when it comes out it will just be a movie. Occupy Wall Street is entering its fourth month. The final convoy of American troops has left Iraq. I’m just saying, let’s keep things in perspective. And let’s hear what you guys think of this HOT TRAILER!

Very excited for this, but does it really have to be split into two films?
Yes! There is a back story and a lot was going on at the same time that Tolkein filled in later. Like Gandolf was barely in the book but you found out later what he was up to. God I’m a freaking nerd.
That’s nothing, The Silmarillion is going to be 437 separate webisodes!
I’ve fantasized about The Silmarillion as a one-hour 6 season TV show for years.
Yes, because Harry Potter started the trend of doubling profits from book-to-movie adaptations, and everybody else feels the need to copy this trend.
Where are the fast and furious prequels!
It’s the only way we’ll get to see Beorn, my favorite random Tolkien character, screw Tom Bombadil.
Well, the extended cuts are the only way to watch the other ones, so I’d say yes. I’m not even a nerd, I just think the long ones are better movies since I didn’t like them the first time I saw them and then a real nerd told me to watch the long ones and I was blown away. Normally, I’d think it was b.s. taking one book and splitting it into 2, but longer seems to be better with these stories. Nice trailer, by the way. Nice to see that Office dude again.
It’s not so much that they are splitting The Hobbit into two movies as much as they are adding a bunch of material from the appendices to LOTR. It’s a Hobbit Plus kinda thing and totally awesome. My only quibble is that Thorin Oakenshield doesn’t really look all that dwarfy. But anyway, WOOOHOOOO!!!!
Marin Freeman is soon going to learn why the studio was so insistent on getting the restraining order on Leonard Nimoy in place so quickly.
YOU SHALL PASS! INTO MY HEART!

I think I’d rather be totally illiterate than think The Hobbit was a boring read.
Huckabeast nailed it. The Hobbit is boring? Crazy talk of the highest order.
I actually enjoyed the Hobbit. That first Lord of the Rings book, now that guy was a bit of a struggle.
Say what now?
I think the biggest problem with the Hobbit is that it’s really a kids book, so it’s kind of dull compared to the Lord of the Rings. I still enjoy it, but it’s not really on the same level.
I pretty much ran around my office screaming after watching this. In the good way, not the “I set myself on fire” way. Martin Freeman! He is the best! I have to stop talking about this now lest I devolve into capslocked gibberish.
I saw this this morning and fainted. I woke up to my dog licking my face.
it looks like it’s for actual babies to get taken to
I don’t know what this means
Neither do I, but it’s a good comment for any movie trailer.
Sometimes you realize that, no matter how good or bad a movie turns out to be, maybe you just kind of wanted to go back and see some place again, and see a little more of it.
I’ve watched all three seasons of Deadwood twelve times
Elf-Cate Blanchett seductively touches Ian McKellen’s silvery hair extensions!!
Bonus rom-com love story, you guys?? MAGIC LOVE STORY?? YOU GUYS???
That could be another call back to the LOTR trilogy when Frodo is talking about giving her the ring, except this time Gandalf can be proposing to her and then she would go all storm face and say no.
I also am very excited for the dragon. Which is in no way related to the fact that he is going to be played by Benedict Cumberbatch. That has absolutely nothing to do with it.
they probably won’t show the dragon until the next movie. waste of a good Cumberbatch
I did not know that! My ‘hoorays’ increased ten fold!
If it were possible for me to more on-board with this movie, I would be now.
I know a lot of people who are bummed that Del Toro backed out of directing it. I don’t know. He kind of ruined the Hellboy series with Hellboy 2, which I thought was terrible. The only thing he’s done that I ever really liked was Pan’s Labyrinth. The only thing Peter Jackson’s done that I really liked was the LoTR trilogy. So, yeah….pretty ok with it.
Did I mentioned I was fucking stoked about this? Because I’m totally fucking stoked about this.
How could you not like Heavenly Creatures????
To be fair, I haven’t seen it. I need to get on that, I guess.
I dont remember liking heavenly creatures. Maybe I should re watch it since it has been a while
I hate that I have to wait a year for this! what the heck! and then another year for the second half. I’m getting too old for that. And holy crap, it’s been ten years since fellowship! ugh, that’s depressing.
Sigh. Hollywood going to the “reboot a 70s/80s animation classic in live action” well again.
Great cartoon, and my first introduction to Tolkien’s works before I read the Hobbit, but it didn’t have everything from the book.
I remember liking those ralph bakshi cartoons when I was a kid.
I assume your talking about Coonskin, Wizards and Cool World with Brad Pitt.
Calling it now: everyone will be wearing their belts this high in 2012.
NOT JUST CHARLES DURNING.
May the hair on his toes never fall out.
Is anyone else surprised at how this seems like a pretty much full trailer? I mean, the movie doesn’t come out for a whole year! I was expecting just like a teaser with a shot of gandalf and one of Frodo and it’s all “This december, Bilbo is coming” and then Gollum goes “my precious” and then there’s the credits. I’m impressed!
yes.
Never felt the urge to read The Hobbit (bad librarian, I know), but I get excited about anything with Martin Freeman and yesterday I also saw the first teasers for the new season of Sherlock!
http://liveinplastic.tumblr.com/post/3588695511/sh-why-dont-people-just-think-jw-oh
Let’s try that again, shall we?

The new series of Sherlock could just be scenes of Matin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch eating and being snippy with each other and I would love it so much.
WHERE? WHERE? holy crap i must find these teasers you speak of.
Here is one! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4A63CCtKwW0&feature=g-u&context=G2d31968FUAAAAAAADAA
And another! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IY185OCSYxg&feature=context&context=G2d31968FUAAAAAAADAA
There are two more, but I’m having more trouble finding them. But still! Exciting!
I hadn’t seen those! These are the ones I watched. The second is from the Irene Adler?Scandal in Bohemia episode!!!

That shoud have said Irene Adler/Scandal in Bohemia. I’m not confused, just unable to type…

This movie should be called The Hobbit: Bilbo Baggins Invetigates
I just finished watching Return of the King last night (Extended Cut, LADIES), and I must say this trailer’s release was timed perfectly. I JUST FINISHED LOOKING AT THAT WORLD.
“Just when i thought I was out, they pull me back in!” -Me
“I know it was you, Frodo. You broke my heart. You broke my heart! ” -Gollum
I love Martin Freeman — no Bilbo.
The song is just goose bump inducing awesome.
That it appears that they are keeping the musical numbers intact is what i love most about this.
This is actually the best Christmas present.
