Emm! A! Stone! Emm! A! Stone! I know that it’s not very interesting to say that you wish a particular host could be a permanent member of the SNL cast, but boy do I wish Emma Stone were a permanent member of the SNL cast! If I had a way to get some wishes granted it definitely wouldn’t be one of my top five, or even top TEN wishes, but if I had 100 wishes it would probably be somewhere between the 80th and 90th wish. (NOT BAD for a weekly sketch comedy show related wish!) (Congratulations to everyone involved.) This was a pretty enjoyable Saturday Night Live, I thought. Although it was almost entirely composed of recurring sketches (“Secret Word,” “Herb Welch,” “Garth and Kat,” etc.), Emma Stone’s committed performance made it all seem a bit fresher than it would have, had it been led by a less enthusiastic host. GROSS! That was a gross sentence, I apologize, but sometimes it’s hard to find non-gross ways to express THE TRUTH. With that said, though, there were some good one-off sketches, like Technology Hump and the bridal shower sketch — but I feel like we’re getting ahead of ourselves. We’ll discuss those after the jump. What I want to say here though, first, is that the cold open was pretty bad this week. I understand the trouble with doing a once-a-week comedy show, in that it is nearly impossible, at the end of the week, to produce “fresh” jokes that haven’t been made a million times already by blogs or daily comedy TV shows. But even understanding that: WHY would you plan to spend your entire cold open on the Rick Perry blunder? Without even offering some kind of new take on it? WHAT ARE YOU THINKING! Of course that joke was going to be made a million times already! And we’ve all moved on! In fact, he’s already made fun of HIMSELF on LETTERMAN! Boooooo. Boo, SNL. Ok, so, that was the first thing. Second, I want to talk about the reprisal of the “Les Jeunes de Paris” sketch, and the Adele “Someone Like You” crying sketch. THOSE WERE GREAT! I liked them very much, but unfortunately neither of them are being offered online. Booooo, online! But we can remember them ourselves. Weren’t those great? Ok, onto the clips.

The monologue was a reboot of Kirsten Dunst’s “Spiderman” monologue from 2001, or whatever. SNORE. Who cares. Andrew Garfield was there, though, which was NOT in the 2001 version! I’m almost positive! Hi, Andrew Garfield!

Herb Welch is one of my favorite recurring sketches. I hope it never stops recurring. Emma Stone wasn’t “used” particularly well here, but you know who was? EVERYONE ELSE! Hi, Herb Welch! Hi, Kristen Wiig!

The bridal shower gifts sketch was great, I thought — kind of reminiscent of the Melissa McCarthy office romance sketch. Probably my FAVORITE of the night.

Oooohhh, but also “Garth and Kat” was one of my favorites of the night. But “Garth and Kat” is always one of my favorites of the night.

Penn State Devil was NOT one of my favorites of the night, speaking of Weekend Update. THE ASHTON KUTCHER JOKE? Ugh. I just cannot get over how much I hated the Ashton Kutcher Twitter joke. I’m not even sure how this bit was other than that because YUCK!

Technology Hump was absolutely very weird and I kind of really liked it but also it made me VERY oddly uncomfortable.

Also, Coldplay played! They were totally fine! Next week: JASON SEGEL!! I have high hopes for that episode! I hope it doesn’t break all of our hearts!

  1. ugh all the videos are currently unavailable!

  2. The “Someone Like You” sketch isn’t available by itself, but it is included in the full episode version on NBC’s website and Hulu. “Les Jeunes de Paris” is not in those unfortunately, but I think it popped up on the YouTube and should be there for a couple more minutes at least? Hopefully. Because it was great.

I liked the Friday Night Lights reference that Emma Stone’s sketch character made in the Adele skit, because I love Friday Night Lights and it made me think maybe Emma Stone does as well and maybe Emma Stone wants to hang out?

  3. The Adele sketch was amazing! Really just one simple joke, but the concept itself was so dead-on that all it needed to do was not get in its own way. Incidentally, it’s streaming in the full-episode stream on Hulu (near the end).

  4. What if Emma Stone just sorta hangs out at 30 Rock for the week and then Jason Segel shows up to rehearse and they really hit it off and so he takes her out to dinner — somewhere nice, you know, but not obnoxiously nice, but not a chain restaurant either, but like a french bistro or some red sauce Italian place — and they really like each other, because obviously, and so they go out a few more times and then Jason Segel asks her to be his girlfriend and she giggles and says, “yes” because they are both adorable like that and then they GET MARRIED AND HAVE MUPPET BABIES!!! What if that happened, you guys??? That would be so great.

  5. Whoever is in charge of wigs (the wig department?) should be given a raise. There have just been some of the best wigs this year. Oddly enough, Kristen Wiig’s wigs are the best wigs. wigs.

  6. I have to agree with what what said in a lot of review that the first half was mostly so-so returning sketches, Secret Word was meh, the cold open about Rick Perry forgetting stuff dragged on, Herb Welch sketch was only good because of Hader, that Digital short had way too many joke premises crammed in there. I still don’t get the Paris thing, at first I was like “why are they doing a sketch based on tektonik, is that just now a thing like parcours?”. Is the joke that the French are Weird?

Then, all of a sudden, BAM! That second half, all winners. Bridal shower was great, but those last two were just such great premised that they nailed. Only thing I wished is that we got a shot of Andrew Garfield crying to Adele. Way to use up a cameo, SNL!

  7. Also, Coldplay played! They were totally fine!

So…they didn’t do any Coldplay songs?

  8. I completely disagree with Kelly. Garth and Kat are getting pretty old, I always love when the Devil shows up, I actually liked the cold open, and as much as I like the Herb Welsh skits, even that is getting old. All in all I thought this was a pretty meh episode.

  9. Technology Hump! The look of it reminded me of some PBS after school science-y show so when I heard that I was like, “what do they mean hump? It couldn’t possibly be what I’m think— oh god it is!” And hilarity ensued.

  10. I’ve never been more disappointed in an episode of SNL There was just way too much Wiig for my liking.

    • I have a very short Wiig tolerance, so I do not disagree with you. However, I really liked the open and a handful of other sketches. (Yay! The Devil!)

I thought she ruined Sookie’s ep moreso than this one.

Actually the only things she does that don’t make me nuts are Michelle Bachmann and Two A-Holes, though I will probably watch Jason Sudekis do anything… except flirt with January Jones, because GET AWAY FROM HER, JASON! COME INTO MY ARMS!

  11. I enjoyed Technology Hump and Les Jeunes Paris the most this week. Overall I thought the reused bits were still decent enough, and Emma Stone killed it in nearly everything she was in.

I had a real “holy shit” moment when the Adele sketch started, because new SNL writer Chris Kelly wrote this humor piece a few weeks ago: http://chriskelly.tumblr.com/post/12041115269/live-blogging-my-572-listens-of-adeles-someone-like

Glad to see one of SNL’s new writers making a mark.

  12. I really really enjoyed SNL. I was really tired and thought I would probably hit the hay but then I realized Emma Stone was the host and that it was a new episode and then I stayed up and watched the whole thing.

My favourite parts were the parts with Emma Stone. Oh! Specifically I enjoyed this one moment where she very gracefully placed herself atop of the office desk to weep majestically to “Someone Like You”. I also really liked that in that sketch no one was crying for anything remotely similar to the lyrics of “Someone Like You”. That’s what made it so real.

    …I love Emma Stone.

  14. I wonder what Gabe’s middling review of Emma Stone on SNL thinks of this laudatory one.

  15. I think I could watch an entire episode of Herb Welch if I’m honest.

But no more Garth and Kath please.

  16. I’m not crazy about Garth and Kat, but I loved Jason as the devil. Kelly and I are opposites!

  17. I know it’s not TGIFriday, but I loved this moment so much and I’m not sure Herb Welch is gonna make it to the end of the week.

  19. Once someone else has liked Coldplay, no one else can, obviously. Nice try being Colplay’s number 2 fan, Kelly. THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE! I checked Billboard, and Coldplay has only sold one record (the other ones don’t count, they’re just rehashed versions of the original record sale). Also, as I have also discovered, once you show everyone your penis unexpectedly, you will always be mentioned, forever.
