The thing about life is that art can be anywhere. I KNOW, I know you don’t believe me, you’re already scoffing, but just hear me out. There are times when you might think, Hey, I’m just going about my day-to-day. Nothing to see here, just normal stupid awful no-frills life stuff that we all have to do over and over again until we finally die. Stuff like having to take money out of an ATM and press the same buttons that lots of people have pressed before you, and discreetly put your hand over fingers while you’re typing in your PIN because you’re not sure if you’re still supposed to be afraid of skimmers and also you’re not sure if putting your hand over your PIN is an effective way to get around skimmers if a skimmer were on that ATM, so you’re both embarrassed and paranoid, and also stuff like not asking for a receipt from the ATM because you don’t want to know. Just normal stuff. But artists Allora & Calzadilla, with their instillation titled Algorithm that was displayed at this year’s Venice Biennale, maybe see things a little differently. Maybe they made an ATM organ? Maybe they did that, and maybe here is the description of it from the video:
Each financial transaction that visitors conduct generates a unique musical score that produces randomized notes and chords at varying degrees of volume by driving pressurized air through pipes selected via the ATM keyboard.
It also MIGHT sound very, very scary, and you might definitely think that it would be a very scary thing to experience in real life. WHO KNOWS?
And this is my favorite one:
If only ALL the ATMs could be art instillation organ ATMs that made you feel super weird and awkward, but also made you feel important and beautiful, just like THE WORLD DOES.
Someday. (Via HYST.)

ATM art was already perfected by Jason Eppink and Posterchild:

Hey, everybody! I’ve got a bunch of cash on me! Right now!

I can’t see this keeping fees down.
maybe someone can create some type of cool algorithm to listen to the music – decode their pin number then steal money from them.
or maybe every time it can play the theme song from cheers.
Makin’ your way in the world today takes everything you’ve got.
And so does the guy who decodes your pin number by listening to this ATM.
I LOVE this. It would be even greater if they could tweek it to give you musical cues about the state of your finances. Like a scary tune if you’re about to be overdrawn, or a triumphant one if you recently balanced your checkbook.
If I were to go to that ATM, it would make the Price is Right fail noise.
Once this dumb girl i knew needed some cash at a club and a stranger led her alone through several dark rooms to a dark room with an ATM in the center of it. The gentleman stood with his back against her back while she swiped her card and put in her pin. The moment she grabbed her cash he led her quickly back to the main room where she found her cluster of friends (and me) who had no idea where she had disappeared to or why. She then recounted the scariest event in her life while we took turns calling her an idiot.
Anyway, i imagine the room looked like that. Empty, Atm in the center, scary music slowly building…..
But how does THIS sound?
ALSO: I had a roommate who whenever anyone would ask where the ATM Machine was he’d say “Hold on while i call the Department of Redundancy department!” I hated that guy.
This has been done before. For instance, Philip Glass once withdrew $1.00 every 5 seconds for 3 and a half hours while his friends stood behind him chanting “12341234!”. And actually it was pretty awesome.
At first when I read “ATM Organs” I thought it was like an ATM machine for human organs…which made it a whole lot weirder/interesting. I guess what I’m trying to say is it’s kind of important to read the whole title.
