Unfortunately, none of us will ever see any of these movies because we will all be DEAD from HURROCANE IRAN, but please enjoy this glimpse of the future that never was. And enjoy heaven! I hear it is great up there.

The Artist

Oooh. Nice! Usually modern attempts to recapture the tone and spirit of old movies is, while compelling in theory, a terrible idea (see: The Good German). But this looks like it might actually succeed. That scene with the two of them at a breakfast table? And the dog head thing? There is a moment where even though you know it’s a new movie you’re actually not entirely sure until John Goodman shows up and then you’re like, right. Good work, trailer.

The Lady Teaser

I bet you this movie will be pretty good, but can we cool it with the “A Power,” “A Destiny” genre of title cards? Those can’t possibly actually get anyone’s attention or make them even remotely interested in seeing a movie, could they? (See also the previous movie trailer, but that is a silent movie, so what are you going to do?) Like someone is supposed to be sitting in a movie theater seeing this and think “Oh neat, A DESTINY!” No.

The Rum Diary

Haha. FROM THE MIND OF HUNTER S. THOMPSON! Always great. Also, I am on board with this, but uh, it better be a little better than this, if you know what I mean? TRY AND LOOK NORMAL WE’VE ALL BEEN DOWN ON HER LOLOL.

Tyrannosaur

Serious question: are all the dudes in the United Kingdom horrific pieces of shit? Because I’ve seen a bunch of movies now, and I’m really starting to get the sense that those dudes are all just broken monsters filled with violent rage that can be unleashed for the pettiest of reasons, and/or HEISTS. Don’t get me wrong, this looks very good, and in general it is a brand of movie that I enjoy, I’m just asking from an anthropological standpoint. What’s wrong, guys? Let it out! No, not like that, I meant like crying!

Blackthorn

We’ll see. Maybe! Next trailer.

Hellraiser: Revelations

Uh, this is not a movie. I’m not sure what this is, but I know that it is not a movie. I’m pretty sure everyone involved in this project, when talking to their friends and family about it, were like, “We’re shooting a….thing.” “Oh wow, you’re actually making a movie?! That’s so neat!” “Well, no, not a movie. It’s just…it’s hard to explain, but it’s just this thing we’re doing and it’s awful.”

  1. I want to make a creepy love letter to Amber Heard and post it on youtube

  2. What the fuck is Hellraiser?

  3. The Rum Diary has finally made it to fruition? That has been in development hell for nigh on a decade. Good on you, Rum Diary the movie!

    • As I started watching it I thought, “No way, another Hunter S. Thompson movie? It won’t be as great at “Fear and Loathing,” Johnny Depp totally made that mov-… Oh, well would you look at that…”

      • Also Johnny Depp looks exactly the same as he did in that movie 15 years ago, why are we not scientists not trying to figure out how this is possible

  4. I really want to see The Artist. No joke.

  5. They made a movie called Tyrannosaur with no Tyrannosaurs in it? Why?

  6. Pretty sure Dina Lohan may be associated with that last, um, “thing.”

  7. hahaha, in the Rum Diaries when Johnny Depp said, “It’s called journalism,” it reminded me of what Gabe says when posting a blog about bull semen in the interstate.

  8. Confession: Sometimes I get Sean Penn and Johnny Depp confused. This time, I thought that screencap might be from the “rock-star-hunts-for-nazis-is-he-also-a-vampire-i-can’t-remember” movie.
Please don’t kick me out of videogum!

  9. so, they basically just took the plot of Very Bad Things and added the pinhead guy to it? very cool, hellraiser. i’m happy for you.

  10. Why does Johnny Depp now use the same voice in every movie since Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas? (even if it’s a bit slowed down since then)

  11. Tyrannosaur: What happened to you?
    Olivia Colman: I fell.
Tyrannosaur: Maybe you should look around you.

  12. This is easily one of my favorite Videogum features, as I kind of love trailer analysis. I’ll keep it short this time around since my last trailer post received four (four!) down votes. So yes, here we go:

The Artist: I was really enjoying this trailer until the melodrama reared its head. At a certain point I began to wonder if this was meant to be a satire, what with the lead drowning in quick sand and bombastic music. I am very interested in the basic idea of a new silent film though, so I’m definitely intrigued.

The Lady: Is this a reboot of ‘Evita’? I’m thinking this is a reboot of ‘Evita’. Outside of that it’s hard to muster much of an opinion based on 50 seconds. Moving on!

The Rum Diary: Johnny Depp’s mincing reactions to anything even remotely surprising that happens to his characters bores me to tears. Enough already. What’s the one line he has in this trailer, ‘You may think this sounds like some crazy hallucination, but I assure you, it’s all true!’? Trust me, I believe it, and trust me, it actually looks pretty boring.

Tyrannosaur: Once I was able to cut through the seemingly impenetrable accent of the male lead I found myself enjoying this one. I gotta agree with Gabe though. Brits, what is up? So angry and sad!

Blackthorn: It’s funny to me how everyone has been decrying the Western’s chances as a genre because of ‘Cowboys & Aliens’ failing miserably at the box-office. ‘No one in Hollywood will do a Western now that it’s been proven no one wants to see them!’ Well, no, we just don’t wanna see one that’s so laughably pandering that it assumes we’ll go just for Harrison Ford and shitty CGI blob monsters. Take it on a case-by-case basis, Hollywood. … Oh yeah, this looks like it could be good.

Hellraiser: Revelations: Oh. Wow. Okay. Well, there ya go. I do love how at first it’s a found footage movie ala ‘Blair Witch’ or ‘Paranormal Activity’ (very hot right now, the found footage genre) and then after a while it’s just not anymore. The movie got bored I guess. Did anyone else sit through the ad for ghost cops and ghost cop cars pulling over the drunk and living? Damn ghost pigs with their laws.

  13. I’m very anxious to see Depp embody the good doctor again! Thompson influenced the past few generations with his invention of Gonzo Journalism. His work and antics will live on to influence even more generations to come. I paid tribute to Hunter S Thompson and his work with my portrait and article on my artist’s blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2011/02/in-memoriam-hunter-s-thompson.html

  14. Tyrannosaur: “Without doubt one of the films of the year.” Hmm . . .

  15. Sorry Blackthorn, you look good, but that is way too much of the movie in the trailer. I like surprises, like that chick Soundgarden knows.

  16. Lovefilms had this to say about ‘tyrannosaur’

“without a doubt one of the films of the year”

    THANKS, THAT’S NICE TO KNOW.
